I got this drive a while back for $40 AR/AC, and it does run on the hot side. It's an "Elements" HD by WD. Drive shows up as a "wd 4000aak external usb device."

A friend was looking for something in that size, not too expensive. I'll let him know. Thanks!

If you find one in stock you might as well buy some lottery tickets or try walking on water. It would practically be a miracle.

I believe you can do everything online and there are no receipts or UPCs to mail in. But don't quote me on that, it's been a while since I did an easy rebate.

That's correct. Except it still takes forever to get your $ back.

Fair warning, I've read several bad reviews about this particular drive. It is apparently very prone to failure:

I've been surprised how quickly I got my EZ rebate checks. The last ones took just a month and a half.

A Staples by me apparently sold out in 10 minutes as I was there exactly 10 minutes after they openned. I found that a bit fishy, they probably only had one or two in stock then. Reeked of lost leader advertising.

The problem is that not every location had these as it was a closeout; the "Express" ones near me didn't have any in stock before the sale (Sat. aft.) and the rebate had a limit of TEN so 1 person could have bought all of their stock as some posters have reporting witnessing at FW. The drive does overheat, is prone to fail and seems to work best pulled out of the case and installed as an internal one. The EZRebates have been very fast lately and the most recent one I sent for was received exactly one month after purchase.

Stopped by a Staples yesterday and was told the ad says "selected stores" because this clearance began long ago. The manager was not happy the ad was running becuase he had several inquiries. They did check their computer and identified some stores still having these in stock so if you stop again, ask them to search for one for you.
