Tivo: Series 3 HD *HOT DEAL* $300 off (for previous customers) Expires 4/30

Tivo has a welcome back offer that gives a $300 discount on the Series 3 HD box(regular $799) making it $499.

Link: Welcome Back Offer

In addition to the $300 discount you get free shipping and they are also offering a year bonus if you pre-pay for 2 years service. So you get 3 years of service for $299, which is $8.33 a month. So basically you can get the box and 3 years service for the price you would normally pay for just the box.

This deal expires tomorrow!

I finally bit and am going to dump the cable company once the TV season is over in a few weeks. With the money I'll be saving on cable, and factoring in the price of the box/subscription, I'll be saving money this time next year.

Man, if that were $299 or $399 I'd probably have ordered already and call Verizon for FIOS tomorrow.

I think there was when the Series 3 first came out, but I haven't heard/seen anything since.

I can't wait to get a Series 3 right before the fall but I am NOT looking forward to dealing with the cable card lies and hassle just to get them.

Explain this to me. Are you just going completely OTA?

Yes. I had previously had Voom before they went under. So I have a professionally installed antenna still hooked up that gets great reception.

Anyway, 98% of what I watch is on the major networks, so I've been basically paying $60+ a month just for the cable HD-DVR just to be able to record the major networks. So I will drop down to the most basic cable for other rooms of the house(somewhere under $20) + the $8 Tivo monthly fee ends up saving me $35-$40 a month overall. So saving $40 a month, roughly pays for the box in one year.

Why can't you just downgrade your cable sub to just get the network HD channels? In my area, at least, I have the HD DVR and what amounts to extended basic cable and pay less than 30 including rental fees.

Not here. If you want the HD-DVR and the locals in HD you have to pay for the 60 channel package. $45 or something like that, then another $10-$3 for the box. I forget the breakdown, but it hovers around $60 a month. It's asinine.

So how many jumped on this?

I believe the head of Tivo said their aim is to get the cost down by the end of the year for the Series 3. Didn't say for how much though. I always though 1k to start was crazy. Suppose $600 is better, but still crazy since you have to pay a monthly fee. They'd be better making software/boxes straight up for the providers if you ask me.

I may have hit a snag. I got my box, haven't hooked it up yet... but from what I've read online it may not work with the Voom boxes for some reason. We'll see.

You can't just connect the coax from the antenna directly to the Tivo without using the Voom box?
