Cheapest place for an ipod?

I'd like to get a 2gb pink ipod. Where should I go for a good price? I've looked everywhere.

ChiTownAbs, Inc 10-21-05 10:36 PM

Is this for you or your girlfriend?

best place is Apple themselves, $199 + free engraving + free shipping. The 2GB ipod nanos are easily available, white or black, they dont make pink but you can get the skins in just about any color. My advice though is put up the extra $50 and get the 4GB. The wait is right now probably about 2-3 weeks for the 4GB.

DVDTalker002 10-22-05 12:37 PM

I think 200 is too much... I'm wanting to spend 150.

usctrojan415 10-22-05 01:11 PM

then go to craigslist and buy a stolen one because you are not going to find it that cheap at a legit retailer...

DJLinus 10-22-05 03:06 PM

Does the Apple store charge sales tax? If so, I may go the Amazon route and save $28 (my county's 7% sales tax rate).

I'm in the market for an iPod - the new 60 gb video one, but I doubt I'll find it on sale anywhere.

Try going and taking a look at macmall.com. I purchased my digital camera and a couple other things from them. They have pretty decent prices on all their merchandise there and ground shipping is usually free after $100. See attached link to go directly to the iPod page of the site. Hope this helps!

I used my Discover Card cash back bonus to get a Sharper Image $80.00 giftcard for $40.00. So I'm going to Sharper Image this weekend to purchase the 4GB iPod.

Apple charges tax, but no shipping if you spend enough. Also, if you are a student, former student, or teacher, you can get the education discount. Used mine to get my 4G 60GB iPod for $400 shipped.

What do you mean by "former student"?

DJLinus 10-23-05 01:59 PM

I'm curious about that, too.

jlanham - Thanks for the link to MacMall. So far, they have the best price on the iPod I want (hey, $6 is $6) and they offer free engraving and a free FM transmitor (after rebate). Do they charge sales tax?

jlanham 10-23-05 04:35 PM

DJLinus - I want to say that I wasn't charged sales tax, but I can't remember because it's been over a year ago that I ordered all of my stuff. Picked this little blurb up from their site under Customer Service:

"Applicable Taxes
Any sales, use or other applicable tax is based on the location to which the order is shipped. If you believe your purchases are not subject to sales tax, please contact your Account Executive for assistance at (800) 622-6255."

You could always gives 'em a call or email to see if your location is charged or not. Good luck!

If you have access to a military AAFES, you can pick up a 2gb nano for $195. No sales tax and great return policy. Unfortunately, the one nearby doesn't have the 4gb nano, so I'm going to order it for $250 from Amazon (no-tax).

I'd order it from MacMall since it's cheaper at $244, but I'm turned off by their *free shipping after rebate*. That's just too shady for me, but if you don't mind rebates, it's seems the way to go.

When i setup an order for the ipod nano 4GB on MacMall they were charging $15 for shipping. Apple has free engraving and free shipping. Crutchfield you can use one of those referral codes and get $20 off but you still have to pay for shipping. I havent been able to find the 4GB in stock anywhere, good luck finding one where its not at least a 2 week wait.

I still can't believe how Apple has cornered the market on this. The biggest discount on ipods seems to be less than 5% (if that!). I've never seen an electronic gismo that never goes on sale!

I would never have bought one for myself for this very reason. However, my wife did get me one and other than the glitchy software, I love it. Oh well, I guess that's why its called a free market.

Welcome to Apple's world. Everyone and their mother wants or owns an iPod, or maybe a mass majority of the population. They can charge whatever they want for this because people are willing to pay for it. Think PS2 or XBOX when it comes out (and the games)...no discount, massive sales, popular product.

The only way iPods go on sale is when new ones come in...hey, if I was selling the hottest product in the world, I would charge for it in the same way...

If you order online, you can pretty much pick any school you want as 'your' school, and get the discount that way,.

DJLinus 10-24-05 01:24 PM

I have no problem with that. Even though I graduated law school a year and a half ago, I still use my student ID when I go to the movies. :)

How much is Apple's student discount?

PJsig08 10-24-05 03:25 PM

10% I believe. Covers tax and a little more. Anyone can get this deal, it's a joke :)

jlanham 10-25-05 01:24 PM

I was doing a little shopping today and found this link to eCost:

http://www.ecost.com/ecost/ecmac/sho...caseb~ipod.asp

I have not used this site before, but right now they have $1.99 shipping (over $25) and $9.99 overnight shipping. Just thought I would throw this out as a possibility.

robwonton 11-07-05 11:07 PM

Students or Pro deal would be the best route. Companies like The Northface and William Sonoma employees get the pro deal rate. Employees and contract workers for Apple get a slight higher discount. (just giving a discount breakdown) Good Luck.

I just bought one from Macy's.com in conjunction with the save 15% off eevrything when you use your Macy's card. Shipping was 20 bucks, but I still come out ahead.

ytrez 11-09-05 08:42 AM

Okay, so I'm behind the times and, while usually pretty tech savvy, I know next to nothing about ipods so...

Can I load my CDs on to my computer and then transfer those files to an ipod? A co-worker says I have to download all the music from itunes for $1 per song.

Mithrandir 11-09-05 12:11 PM

Just import the CDs into itunes. Once they're there, they'll load on your ipod.
