Widescreen/HD TVs-what's the best price nowadays?
 

I am about to get some extra money and am looking into getting one to make my DVDs fit the screen and get closer to a theater experience. Anyone know where I can get a decent sized one for a reasonable price? Bear in mind I would be happy with something larger than 32" but not immense in size.

Also, is it true that the prices on these things are likely to jump during high sports times like football season?

prices will probably drop with new technology coming out that supercedes existing tech

wheres the best place to get info on the new technology. im always afraid the second i buy a new tv that they will all drop in price with the newest greatest thing coming out the next day.

I guarantee that will happen, you just have to get past it. It's like buying a computer, you could wait because next month you'll get more power for the same money, but you could do that forever. Just make sure you are happy with what you buy today and don't look back.

I think most are in waiting game so to speak on HDTV. Unless you can afford to upgrade in 3 years. Alot folks are waiting for it stabilize some, especially 1080p sets which should drop radically in two years with all loopla about next consoles already being able to do that. 2006/7 seems goodtime to grab latest set for those only want upgrade every decade or less.

well at the very least i dont want to buy on the last day before the new stuff comes out. thats what im most afraid of.

wednesday: i buy a $2000 state of the art tv...has everything

thursday: same tv is now $499, $2000 buys a tv about 16 times better, this one REALLY has everything and the one i thought had everything now is a piece of crap

One of two things a new HD set should have:

If it has a DVI input, make sure it's HDCP compliant (new copywrite protection scheme)

Or, that it has an HDMI input (the spec requires that it's HDCP compliant-so no worries there).

Some current and many future source components like DVD players that output a scaled or HD resolution signal that is HDCP protected...so if your HDTV set does not accept HDCP signals, the image will not show up on your screen.

I saw a really neat looking black 30" Philips widescreen HDTV (with internal hdtv tuner), and it was around $700.

I wish I could find more model information on it.

It was at one of my local Wal-Marts during lunch... I think the total price was $688 or so.

I've got a 30" WS XBR and a 40" XBR, so I'm not looking to buy right now, but it looked really nice from what I saw of it. I checked Philips website and didn't recognize it, and I checked Wal-Mart's website too... no dice.

How much does an average 40" run? I saw a Toshiba 40" available at BestBuy.com for about $1500, but I tend to stay loyal to Sony when it comes to electronics, except for the present where I have a 27' JVC and a Sony DVD and sound system. ;)

I got lucky when I bought mine doing just that (without realizing it). Bought a 61" DILA JVC on backorder and they switched to a newer model for the same price. I got it $500 less than anywhere I can find it now.

Our PC Connection rep sent us a e-mail saying they had a 42" HD Plasma on sale for $1299. It's also on their site for $100 more, but still appears to be a great deal.

With regard to the $1399 + $60 shipping plasma from PC Connection. No one has even seen this yet. Still on a boat. Reads well but no one really believes that this thing can be really good for less than half the price of other 42 inch HD plasmas. If it sound to good to be true....

I got an Akai 42" rear-projection (which is a lesser Sony brand if I'm not mistaken) for $700 delivered from Circuit City. The catch? it's 1080i/480p instead of 720p. What this means is that shows that are broadcast in 720p are only shown in 480p (about DVD quality). As far as my knowledge, every HD channel I get is 1080i except for ABC/ESPN, which are 720p, and Fox, which is 480p. So, I'm only missing out on those stations and to be honest, I can't tell the difference between 720p and 480p on other people's tv's, but I can between 1080i and 480p.

It's not as crystal clear as my friend's 70" Mitsubishi, but for the price it was impossible to beat. Further, I figured a truly good 60" was gonna run me 3k now, or 1k in a couple years. For my budget, this was perfect.

Right now, CC Online lists it at $850 free delivery. I highly recommend purchasing the stand as well, as the TV sits a little low.

Razzak, glad you like your Akai, however, the Akai is in no way related to Sony and the Akai is considered to be the bottom of the barrel of RPTV. Not to say it isn't decent for the price, but it doesn't compare to the Sony. So instead of paying $850 plus tax for the Akai, plus $85 plus tax for the stand. He can get the larger 46 inch, top rated Sony for about $300 more. I believe the Sony can do 720P.

Sorry, I was mistaken. Samsung owns Akai, not sony. Also, I was trying to suggest that you ask if you can get a deal on it, because I've heard of people getting it for as low as $600 delivered on black friday. It was listed at $850 when I bought it, but got it for $700 plus stand for $50 plus tax. Or about $650 less. It's worth heading down to CC to ask about.

Sony XBR 34 inch is a steal for $1499 at Best Buy.

I looked at the Best Buy web site and they don't even have the 34 XBR 960 anymore. It is for sure a great set but you really need the stand to go with it and the stand is $350. Let's say BB actually had the XBR for $1500. Add $350 for the stand. $1850 plus tax. Now we are at about $2,000 for a 34 inch. With 4:3 material, a 34 inch widescreen only gives a 27.8 inch 4:3 image.
27.8 inch image just doesn't get it done. Surprisingly enough, a 46 inch widescreen provides about 85% more screen area than a 34 inch widescreen .

wait for Black Friday..get a 42 inch plasma for 1500 at Best Buy...

I found a 42 inch Plasma Flatscreen at Best Buy for about 1500 but it was a newer brand called Maxent. What's interesting is that it has great picture quality, I just wonder what the catch is as it seems too good to be true as it is not a major name appliance.
