We call to Taiwan all the time. We use the 3 methods:

1. For short duration calls, we use 10-10-345.
2. For calls that are long (hour+), my wife use 10-10-220 ($1.79 for the 1st 10 minutes, then 10 cents per min after that). $6.79 for 60 minutes, vs $7.35 on 10-10-345 per rates you posted.
3. Every Saturday we set up Netmeeting over my cable modem and my parents' DSL connection. We video conference for 2+ hours per week (grandparents wants to see the baby) for... FREE!! That's the best deal of course. With broadband and computers so popular in Taiwan, you may want to consider this option if feisble.

bigzoo.com (1-800 number) is 7.9 cents/minute with no connection charge (75 cents/month charge) to Taiwan.

Check out http://www.onesuite.com/.
It's prepaid and 8 cents/min to Taiwan. No monthly fee or connection fee. But 55 cents/call if you use pay phone.
I use it to call Japan. The sound was good but I got cut off few times during 3 hr call. I think $10 is the min. recharge and 2.9 cents/min in the US.

If you have Sam's Club membership, check out AT&T's pre-paid cards there. I bought a 1000-minute card for $35.70+Tax. It's good for 1000 minutes domestically or 500 minutes to Taiwan. The quality is very good and always accessible.

If you don't mind dialing a bunch of numbers, on line phone card is always cheaper. And no connection fee. No tax. Which you'll see when you dial the 10-10-XXX. Bigzoo.com is one of them. But I use www.pincity.com
They have local access rate which you dial a local call instead of a 1-800 call. And that is always cheaper.

You might want to check out this site:

www.abtolls.com

, which has comparisons of calling plans, tells you who owns the 10-10 companies, etc.

One more thing about pincity is that you can use the same phone card to call FROM Taiwan. If you call from Taipei, the price is cheaper than some of the phone companies in Taiwan!

I totally agree with simbawang. Pincity.com is the best way to go. I use them to call china and they are cheap, you have a phone record, good CS, connect most of the time but not always clear though. On the other hand, all you have to do is write them an e-mail and they will credit your account and investigate why there is a poor connection. They are great and have not had too trouble with them and.....they're CHEAP!!!!!

I make a lot of calls to Peru.

Bigzoo has the rate at $0.30, pincity has the rate at $0.35.

Are these the final rates? That is, when they say no fees, are there really no fees, nothing else added to the $0.30 or $0.35 rates? (taxes, universal connectivity fee, etc).

Is there any history of these companies going out of business and keeping all of the cash?

How do you put credit into your account? Do they accept American Express?

Thanks!

Yes they are all final fees. For my 3yr of experience using these phone cards, I've only been charged less, never more. They kept lowering their rates and seems to get to a stable point recently. But if they say 7cents a minute, they mean 7cents. Not any additional kind of charge at all. This is why I like these phone cards. But most of them charge connection fees when you call using a toll phone.

Not as I know of. But I don't think you will be willing to recharge your card for more than $20. Maybe during some promotions. Pincity sometimes have promotion. They add an extra 5~10% to the minutes you buy. So you won't loose too much money even if they go out of business. And I am pretty sure people on DVD Talk will be warning us in advance if it is going to happen.

It's as easy as click recharge, type in your card number, select the amount you want to recharge, and you are all set. Pincity do accept AE, and Discover other than VISA and Master Card. bigzoo only accept VISA and Master Card.
Thanks! [/B][/QUOTE]

Thanks !!!

Thank you all for the great imput.

Few questions...

1) for the following 3 companies, are they all phone cards or billed to your local phone company ?

2) any connection fees ?

3) min usage time/fee for each calls ?

4) no other fees? ie: if use Local Access Number or 800 number... the cost stated is the cost to pay & nothing more (no taxes, no other fees) ?

5) what is the min I will need to recharge each time ?

6) It seem like Pincity.com is the winner when dialing using Local Access Number if there are no taxes, connection fee, min usage per call, & other fees... Is this true ?

**

To summarize each providers ccost calling to Taiwan:

** bigzoo.com (1-800 number)

886 == Taiwan == $0.0790
886 2 == Taiwan-Taipei == $0.0790
886 9 == Taiwan-Mobile == $0.1800

** Onesuite.com

886 == Taiwan == $0.0800
886 2 == Taiwan-Taipei == $0.0600
886 9 == Taiwan-Mobile == $0.1800

** Pincity.com

886 == Taiwan == $0.0910 (800) == $0.0750 (local)
886 2 == Taiwan-Taipei == $0.0710 (800) == $0.0550 (local)
886 9 == Taiwan-Mobile == $0.1450 (800) == $0.1290 (local)

**

Thank you guys for the great help...

2)No.
3)Per minute, every call under a minute is considered a minute. I think all phone companies here work this way.
4)And No.
5) what is the min I will need to recharge each time ?
$10USD normally
6) It seem like Pincity.com is the winner when dialing using Local Access Number if there are no taxes, connection fee, min usage per call, & other fees... Is this true ?
I strongly suggest that you sign up first and try it out. They normally give you free minutes just for signing up. You can compare their quality and purchase if you think they are good. You live in Texas, and I am pretty sure they have local access number there. (They don't have it in Vermont) And if you also have unlimited minutes for your local phone, pincity is your best choice for the money.

Thanks simbawang

Thanks...

I think I will give PinCity.com a try. It seems the cheapest if there's not additional costs (ie: taxes, connection fee, unversal fee, etc...). & Yes, they do have local access numbers.

Thank you simbawang for the detail reply.
