I loved those two characters in Aliens, but feel like people judge Alien 3 too harshly because of their demise at the start there. Aliens is a great action flick, but not as good as a sci-fi/horror as 1 and 3.

Killing off two of the most beloved characters from the prior movie raised the stakes for Ripley exponentially, and set a tone of hopelessness and despair that greatly differentiated Alien 3 from its predecessors. Unfortunately, what most audiences want from a sequel is more of the same they got the last time, and that isn't what Fincher was going for at all.
