This looks like a great lineup. I'm familiar with some of the titles, but haven't seen any of them. I do have to roll my eyes a little at the marketing speak name dropping a bunch of directors/movies that have nothing to do with the films in question.

They mention that if you're in North America, and want the full 3 year pre-order package, it'll also be available on MVD Shop, but it doesn't seem to be listed there yet.

I wonder how much the US package will be. I did the 10 year Arrow package but it seemed like it took a few years to really pay off. I'm assuming the UK only titles won't be part of the deal.

Absolute classic. That would be a good opportunity to throw in the lesser sequels -- one by Chan, one by Johnnie To -- as I doubt either of them would warrant a release in the west, but would be worth seeing as sort of bonus features, or paired up on a single disc. Alas . . . ;)

All of the films in that Keaton/Helicopter set are available on the National Film Board of Canada website to stream for free, as is virtually everything else the NFB ever funded, from shorts to theatrical features (including other CI releases like HITMAN HART, KANEHSATAKE, NOBODY WAVED GOODBYE (and the shorts), THE ERNIE GAME (and the shorts), DON'T LET THE ANGELS FALL, FORBIDDEN LOVE, all three films in the OTHER FRENCH NEW WAVE set., etc. Pretty much all the non-DTV stuff. I'm not sure if signing up for a free account at the National Film Board of Canada website is restricted to Canadians only (anyone know?), but if it's open to all then it's a good way to sample these before buying (assuming anyone outside of Canada has any interest in Canadian cinema!). If access is restricted, please ignore me. :)

A MOMENT OF ROMANCE is quintessential Hong Kong cinema . . . but (here I go again, yawn) this is another missed opportunity to include the sequels to a Hong Kong picture in a single set. Both follow-ups are very worthwhile viewing if not quite as classic as the original (which may turn Radiance and/or other boutiques off releasing then). Including them in this release for context would’ve been great. Oh well. I’m at least grateful that someone took a chance on this one; I don’t think it’s been released yet on Blu-ray in Hong Kong.
Details for the Radiance version: A Moment of Romance Small-time hood Wah Dee (Andy Lau, Infernal Affairs) is enlisted by Triad boss Trumpet (Tommy Wong, The Killer) as a getaway driver for a daring heist that goes wrong. Thinking fast Dee takes Jo Jo (Jacklyn Chien-Lien Wu, The Barefooted Kid) hostage to save his skin, but the bosses order her to be killed. They escape and begin a forbidden relationship while being chased by both sides of the law. Produced by Johnnie To (Throwdown) and Ringo Lam (City on Fire) the film is sensationally directed by Benny Chan in his feature debut. With a breakneck pace and violence reminiscent of To and Takashi Miike and the beautiful and emotive sensibility of Wong Kar-wai, the film features stunning performances from Lau, and Wu in her debut work. Here’s the details on the Commedia set. Interesting to see the attempt to package these (in an apparently ongoing series) as a “misunderstood” genre, but that seems a bit presumptuous. They were totally understood in their day, by the domestic audiences (and diasporas) they were created for, and much has been written about them over the decades. I don’t think a lot of them were designed with international ‘understanding’ in mind anyway, and many are probably still an acquired taste, but I can certainly remember a couple of ‘Little Italy’ video stores back in the day that had more of these lining the walls than films in any other genre, so clearly they weren’t lacking for appreciation. Most were without subs, though, as I found out the hard way. :lol: Commedia all'italiana: Three Films by Dino Risi Comedy ruled the box office in Italy from the late 1950s to the 1970s where the commedia all’italiana also found critical success. Great talent behind and in front of the camera delivered a series of brilliant films that gave an incredible spin on familiar genres with comedic overtones that often held a dark and biting critique of social mores that would provoke a challenge to a society in need of change. Feted at local awards ceremonies and European festivals as well as garnering attention from the Academy Awards this prestige would propel the films and filmmakers to international stardom but many would go unreleased in the UK for home viewing. At last, this ongoing series shines a light on this misunderstood filmmaking style with the first collection focusing on three films by master director Dino Risi, presented from new restorations and featuring a suite of contextualising extras. From a prestigious lineage in the ancient art of satirical theatre in commedia dell’arte, the Italian-style comedy distinguished itself in the late 1950s from the earlier broad comedies popularised by the likes of Toto and Vittorio De Sica with a ruthless approach to social satire focused on cynicism and the grotesque. An early example of the switch in tone can be found in Dino Risi’s Il vedovo, in which Italy’s preeminent comedy actor Alberto Sordi plays a philandering husband of a wealthy and successful woman who simply tolerates her husband's ineptitude. Until he sees a potential plan for her death, which would result in a great inheritance for him. One of the greatest Italian actors of all time, Vittorio Gassman (Bitter Rice) known as Il Mattatore ‘The Showman’ earns his name from this film and his wonderful performance as an actor with the uncanny ability to mimic regional accents, allowing him to pull off a series of scams. Ingeniously plotted by screenwriters Ettore Scola and Ruggero Maccari who were behind some of the greatest films in the commedia all’italiana including Il Sorpasso and Ugly, Dirty and Bad. Alternately known as Love & Larceny, Dino Risi (Anima Persa) directs this classic comedy which was nominated for the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and makes its English-subtitled Blu-ray debut. A career highlight for director Dino Risi and his star Vittorio Gasman, Il sorpasso isn’t just one of the heights of commedia all’italiana but of all Italian cinema. Jean-Louis Trintignant (The Conformist) plays Roberto, a shy law student who meets Bruno (Gassman), a larger-than-life Roman playboy who convinces Roberto to join him on a road trip from Rome to the Tuscan countryside. Their travels teach them about each other and themselves, oscillating between comedy and tragedy with powerful and affecting commentary on the easy life. Long admired in Italy, the film has influenced comedic filmmakers including Alexander Payne (Sideways) and Aziz Ansari (Master of None). Radiance has the Ann Hui’s Hong Kong ghost story VISIBLE SECRET (2001) set for October, with UK and US editions. Apparently this is their first “single pressing only” title, with no standard edition later. As with their release of A MOMENT OF ROMANCE, they didn’t bother with the sequel, even though it’s purely name-only. I don’t see it on their US site but it’s up for preorder at the usual places:
