The 2008 set may have been $90 MSRP but no way in hell did people pay that price. I got it for $62 on release on Amazon.

You’re right. It was $87 for preorders on Amazon, but dropped to $62 a week before the release date.

In any case, with both the DVD and Blu-ray Godfather sets, they both dropped to less than half their release date pricing within a few years, and I imagine the same will happen with the 4K set, so patience will save you money.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

It was mentioned over on that other site that moviesunlimited was having a (15% off $50) 15off50 sale. The regular UHD trilogy comes to $67 with free ship so I went with that. We'll see how this goes. I don't think I've ever used them before.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

Taking my son to see The Godfather 50 Years at Dolby Cinema on Friday. He's never seen The Godfather and I've never seen it in a theater. Should be cool. Hope he likes it - - he's not much of a cinephile.
Movie is largely sold out, which is cool to see.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

I'm also seeing the 50th anniversary Dolby showing on Saturday at AMC. Looking forward to it and the new transfer. It's not too often you can see a 50 year old classic that was before your time in the theatre.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

The Collector's Edition has now sold out at Target

Best Buy is the last retailer that has it for $140. Amazon had a pre-order for $107 before it sold out.

I didn't need the extra trinkets since the disc content is the same as the regular 4K edition is the same, which I already pre-ordered.

So it looks like this is a new restoration than the 2008 one with Harris, and they uncovered even more original film to work with.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

I ordered mine on Amazon long before it ever went on sale. Knowing Amazon though, they don't fulfill orders according to when you prebooked, so I'm sure I'll be notified it's on backorder the week of release.

The collector's set is back for preorders at Amazon

I saw they will also release I and II as 50th anniversary blu-rays and they resemble the artwork for the Godfather 3 recut.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

So we saw this in the Dolby Cinema tonight. It looks great but was much grainier than I expected. I guess that makes it feel more film like but starting with those dark close-ups really make you notice the grain. But otherwise spectacular.
And it still holds up so well.

And seeing it on a huge screen really shows how bad the fighting is in the scene of Sonny beating up Carlo in the street, with the fake air punches. I still don't know why FFC kept that in. Like Hitchcock leaving in the kid who plugs his ears before the gunshot in North By Northwest, it's an inexplicable decision from a master.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

It’s definitely going to be grainy and that’s great, shows there’s no DNR going on.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

I just got back from seeing it at AMC. It was great. I also noticed it was grainy, but I guess that keeps the film authentic and a product of it's time and not artificially cleaned up digitally. That would piss off the film purists. Having never seen it on the big screen, it was a good experience and it does hold up well for a 50 year old movie. It was jarring seeing how young Pacino, Caan and Keaton looked.

It was a pretty good turnout for my showing. Probably about 60 or 70 in a 180 seat Dolby auditorium.

Well, I look forward to getting my 4K set next month.

I think a lot of people are getting to see it in the theater for the first time.

You do realize that was a real fight right? I mean the air punch excluded, Sonny really broke his ribs in that scene.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

Maybe in the minority but if they did release a set with the picture cleaned up and no grain I am all for it since it is distracting to see that on a big TV.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

It was made on actual, real film. It will always have grain. If you digitally scrub that out then you lose detail.

I'd hate to watch a movie at your place. I would want to turn off motion smoothing snd constantly tweak the shit out of it.

The new remastered re-release made $965K over the weekend. Not bad for a 50 year old movie. It played in 156 theatres.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

I saw the re-release tonight and couldn't believe how many people were there on a Tuesday night. The theater was more than half full. I remember seeing 2001 during its IMAX release a few years back and there were maybe 5 people.

I thought the new restoration looked great, and while it was appropriately grainy, I was actually surprised at how fine and subtle it was on a massive screen. It was obvious they used the previous version as the guide for this new one. In terms of color timing it looked almost exactly the same. I never saw the '08 projected theatrically, so I can't say how much of an upgrade this one was in terms of detail. But again, I thought it looked great. Dolby Cinema really is the best.
