According to Diabolik, they confirmed the standard set does have all 5 discs, including all 3 cuts of The Godfather, Part III.

Blu-ray.com has Blu and 4K versions listed. It’s only 4K, right?

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

Yeah it appears they are releasing a regular BD box set and a re-release of 1 and 2 on BD as well.

I mean I'm not sure what the point of those are? They have already been released on BD unless it's a new remastering. If you don't have a 4K TV and don't already have them on BD, then I suppose it has value to some. But, I think for the most part, people care about the new 4K transfers.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

Coppola has been doing such great work going back remastering all his films. It looks like The Conversation may be the next in line for a new disc. That has a new print playing in NYC starting this weekend. The new version of The Rain People was TCM recently. WB Archive should be putting that out soon too.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

I'd love to get the big set with the prints and book - but $80 more? I'm just going to wait and see if prices drop before street date. I'll probably bite if it goes to $150 or less.

Incidentally, here's a few commercial breaks from the first airing of the Godfather Saga in 1977:

The Godfather pt3 was rushed to the theaters. Once it was released, Coppola did some more tweaks and that tweaked version has been the default Home Video version since 1991 or so.

So the three cuts are
1. Original Theatrical
2. Home Video Version (VHS, LD, DVD, Blu)
3. Coda version, just last year - Blu/4k

Theatrical cut (first time on home video), Director's Cut, Coda.

Coppola ran way behind schedule on production of Godfather III in 1990, but was locked into a contractually mandated Christmas release date in order to qualify for Oscar eligibility. He rushed together a version to get out the door, but continued working on editing the film even as it played in theaters. His final cut was not completed until a few months later, and made its debut with the VHS release. That "Director's Cut" then became the default for all home video releases for the next three decades until Coppola reworked the movie for the "Coda" version in late 2020.

Are there significant differences between the theatrical and the home release?

You're talking the theatrical cut and the original "director's cut"? The latter is 9 minutes longer and had editing tightened up and refined throughout the film.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

Has the theatrical cut of III been seen/available anywhere outside that initial theatrical run - that's the version I want to see again.

I've seen scuttlebutt that networks like HBO showed that version back in the day, but not sure if there's any firm records of that.

The deluxe set is now $140 on Amazon (matching Best Buy's prebook price). That was low enough for me - preordered.

Does the packaging on the deluxe set have larger dimensions than your standard shelf fitting blu ray/4K box set? It looks somewhere close to the size of the Criterion Complete Bergman set.

Seeing as it contains a hardcover book, I would think it's oversized. I would guess somewhere in the 8" x 11" range, if not larger.

Am I reading these correctly? As in, you own The Godfather films on multiple formats and are considering buying them on another format, but have never watched them, but have looked up what commercials aired when they were on tv and have watched those?

That sounds about right. He cares far more about the commercials that played during its TV airings and the different media and packaging of its releases than he does the actual movies. The movies are just incidental.

He hates sports but will dig sports VHS tapes out of the trash because they might have an amusing crowd shot on them.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

I'm not really interested in the monstrosity of a Collector's Edition (and having to try to find a place to fit it on my shelf), but when the difference is only $20 it feels like the regular edition isn't worth the price.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

The Godfather Blu-ray set went from $90 at release in 2008 to ~$25 at 2011 holidays, so if you can wait a few years, I'm sure this set will take a similar trajectory.
