End of Era For Blu-ray & Cases?

I have heard from a few wholesalers of Blu-ray and DVD cases that they may not bring in any more of the typical plastic Blu-ray and DVD cases due to the dramatic increase in costs of sending a shipping container from Asia to North America.

It will be interesting if we see more paper-printed cases in the near-future.

Hmm, I've got a box full of empty Blu-ray cases for discs that I put into DiscSox sleeves. Time to list them on eBay! :)

Are they gonna switch to just sleeves?

Bring back snappers!

Shipping container costs have gone up dramatically in the past year and it's one of the main reasons behind the massive inflation hitting most consumer items.

I am far less inclined to purchase physical media if they plan to move away from plastic cases. I'm guessing UHD wouldn't be affected with the greater profit margins but BD and DVD would be far more vulnerable.

I'd be down for more paper cases. I have several already and if you treat them well they hold up just fine.

As somebody who works in the shipping container industry, let me tell you: it's not getting better anytime soon.
If you know people needing jobs, the world seriously needs truck drivers and container/chassis mechanics.

I usually throw out the crappy eco cases anyway to replace with actual bluray cases.

It's those higher-quality replacement Blu-ray cases that are going to be difficult to find soon.

Jokes on them, I have 500+ HD DVD cases made from very sturdy material!

I have heard that, for the last year or two, people trying to buy cases from the places that sell them in bulk have reported that there a lot of out-of-stocks.

Probably related? :(

Too bad they couldn't just, you know, manufacture them in North America. Shocking concept, I know, but lots of plastic household products are still made in the USA. Surely one of those companies could set up a line to crank out cases on a limited or even permanent basis?

Busted – curse you!

Meanwhile, I'm looking at dozens of storage totes here that say Made In USA right on the labels and molded into the plastic, bought over the past few years. Conspiracy! You guys are clearly operating slave-driven underground sweatshops on domestic soil. Oh, the humanity, etc.

I was trying to slim down a bunch of my collection by putting franchises together in mult-disc cases. I placed an order with Casetopia last December and it still hasn't shipped because a few of the cases went out of stock.
...I probably should email them about cancelling that.

We should also be picking up the chaff from the thrift stores or the clearance stuff at Half Price Books. There’s always extra Blu-ray titles that aren’t doing anything.

My guess is budget labels like Echo Bridge would be the most severely affected. When you are selling new discs under $10 retail, the cost of plastic cases doubling really eats into the bottom line.

I have a box with cases that I ordered a few years ago stashed in my closet. I prefer the Blu cases over the black 4k cases. Sometimes the 4k cases come broken and they priced higher. Damn shame if Blu cases will turn extinct.

Global supply chains are really messed up that's why, shipping container shortages, vessel space shortages, trucker shortages, huge delays at ocean ports, it's a perfect storm of shit, I see the repercussions every day in my industry. Export/import costs are going through the roof. But one of our clients is still regularly importing plenty of BD/DVD printed inserts from Canada into the US, so I guess they are still able to source plastic cases to put them in, so far.

I hate to tell you, Bob, but they probably haven’t shipped because Casetopia is one of the shiftiest companies out there, in fact, the Better Business Bureau gives them an F. There’s quite a lot of negative talk about them on that other entertainment forum. Buyer beware.

I want to say that for the last 3 orders I've made with Casetopia nothing shipped for a few weeks, but once I emailed asking about the status, things magically shipped the next day.

Wait, break it down…when is Blu-ray format going away?

We’re talking about how hard it’s going to be to source the plastic cases from overseas due to the ongoing problems with the global supply chain.
