Dune (1984) in 4K

Also posted in the Arrow Films thread:

Dune fans have a ton of options today, and some of them are selling quickly.

In the UK, Arrow is releasing:
- 2-Disc Limited Edition with book, poster, and other physical swag (UHD + Bonus Features BD, new worm art) -- *Note: A comparable Blu-ray + Bonus Features LE is also available.
- 3-Disc Steelbook (UHD, Blu-ray, Bonus Features BD, original theatrical poster art)
- 3-Disc Limted Edition Deluxe Steelbook with 2 BOOKS and physical swag (UHD, Blu-ray, Bonus Features BD, original theatrical poster art)

That last one is the only way to get the 2nd book. All three are available for preorder at Zavvi and at DiabolikDVD.

In Germany, Koch Films is releasing:

- 3-Disc SteelBook (UHD + Blu-ray, Bonus Features BD, exclusive art)
- 3-Disc MediaBook (UHD, Blu-ray, Bonus Features BD, different exclusive art)
- 7-Disc Ultimate Edition (UHD, Blu-ray, 2 Bonus Features BDs, 2 extended cut discs, soundtrack CD, artwork not yet revealed)

That last one is exclusive to the Koch Films shop, which unfortunately does not ship to the US or the UK. The other two don't claim to be exclusive, but I don't see them available on Amazon.de yet.

https://shop.kochfilms.de/de/dune-de...ch-films-shop1
https://shop.kochfilms.de/de/dune-de...och-films-shop

The contents of the two extended cuts discs are not yet confirmed, but I'm hearing that they may be both the MCA TV cut and the "Spicediver" fan edit. No word on whether either is remastered in HD, but I wouldn't hold your breath. "Spicediver" currently only exists in 360p resolution.

I went for the limited steelbook set via DiabolikDVD. Also combined my order with Tale of Two Sisters.

Does the Blu-ray only edition have those extras that the UHD disc has listed on its disc? And does Zavvi charge instant?

Zavvi does not charge your card until the order ships.

You can answer the other question yourself buy going to the product page and looking at all of the details that are clearly written out.

Yes, unfortunately.

Somebody from the label posted on Twitter that the rights for the extended cut have been rescinded in the US, no reason given.

See first post. The German "Ultimate Edition" has two discs labeled extended cut, but it has not yet been confirmed what is on them.

Re: Dune (1984) in 4K

Amazon now has listings for the Arrow discs:

- - -

The listing isn't entirely clear, but I believe the last one is just the SteelBook, not the "Deluxe Limted Edition" SteelBook with the books and other swag.

DiabolikDVD has much better prices:
- Blu-ray LE $32.99
- 4K UHD LE $37.99
- 4K UHD SteelBook $37.99
- 4K UHD Deluxe SteelBook $46.99

I still can't believe how movies like Dune are receiving lavish 4K box sets and classic blockbusters aren't even on the format. The major studios should be ashamed.

The future of disc collecting is boutique labels like this and they’re going to focus on titles like this because nut jobs like us will buy them. Even without the extended cut I keep finding myself drawn to this discussion, maybe hoping for a cheaper version without all the physical stuff.

I don’t know why I didn’t think this would be US release as well. I bought the UK Zavvi fir some reason. Canceled it and just got US on Amazon…

Dune was a box office bomb and took a critical pounding when it was released three decades ago, but it's gone on to become a cult classic. David Lynch. Classic sci-fi novel. Insane art direction.

And, yeah, this is the future of home video on disc. More boutique labels putting out cult classics -- science fiction, horror, auteur directors, oddball movies.

Most mainstream blockbusters can draw audiences to theaters, but they quicky become forgotten and end up buried in the studio catalogs unless they're science fiction, fantasy, horror, superhero, Kubrick, Cameron, Lynch, et al.

I do sort of wonder if, in the future, we'll start to see things like the MCU films, Spielberg, Star Wars, LOTR, Disney animation, and other heavyweights showing up on the boutique labels when DVD/BR/4K starts drying up at the mainstream level, and we're back in the laserdisc/Criterion days.

Zavvi deluxe ordered. Haven't seen this one in years.

I would get this were it not for the fact that it will make the somewhat lackluster effects sequences look even more lackluster.
