Well, I "sort of" caved on this one - I asked for it as a Christmas present.
Still planning on buying the 4K trilogy next year.

If its FFC's true vision of the film I wonder if that means we'll get a digitally de-aged Tom Hagen.

Good article from The New York Times.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/02/m...d-coppola.html
In the final scene of “The Godfather Part III,” Michael Corleone, the aged protagonist of this epic crime drama, is left in solitude to contemplate his sins, gripped with guilt over actions that have devastated his family and the knowledge that he cannot change what he has done.Francis Ford Coppola, the director and co-screenwriter of the “Godfather” series, has never approached his work in quite the same way.
These three movies have won a combined nine Academy Awards, grossed more than $1.1 billion when adjusted for inflation and gained an exalted status in the popular consciousness. But rather than regard them as immutable monuments, Coppola has treated them like an unfinished painting he is free to update.
He has previously restored and reordered portions of the “Godfather” story, modifying its multigenerational tale of corruption, vengeance and family duty as his own ideas about storytelling have evolved.
Now he has turned his attention to “The Godfather Part III,” the 1990 film that took a more meditative approach to the Corleones. Unlike the near universal acclaim the first two movies enjoy, “Part III” is remembered as the Fredo of its family — the one that doesn’t really measure up. It was criticized for its lugubrious tone, convoluted plot and Coppola’s casting of his daughter, Sofia — now a celebrated filmmaker in her own right — as Michael’s doomed daughter, Mary.

Roger Ebert mentioned he was always opposed to the star-rating system but obliged because the newspapers liked the format. He preferred the simple yes/no recommendation while allowing the text to speak to what degree he enjoyed the film.
There were instances where a few films in his top ten list were given three 1/2 stars when a couple of four-star reviewed films from that same year were left off.

Coppola talked about the new cut.

I was surprised how fast I got this from Amazon. It shipped out yesterday and I already got it this morning from UPS. I plan to marathon the whole series at some point soon. Been in the mood to want to watch the films.

The new cut, however, is worse. After viewing both movies back to back, it's safe to say that Coppola should have left well-enough alone.

I just watched Coda on New Year's Day and it was great. I really enjoyed this version and it has never looked/sounded better. Until the 4K arrives, of course.

But the changes made for this cut are baffling and almost arbitrary, especially the otherwise very sad ending. Can't say anymore otherwise it will spoil the film.

There is no doubt it looks and sounds great. I wish all the Blu-rays of THE GODFATHER was at that level of quality.

I think this cut flows much better than the original cut, IMO. I dug the new beginning, the reworked ending, and the subsequent rearranging of some scenes.

The new cut was dumb and the movie is still not good.

What really bothered me were the statements at the very end, right before the credits...I mean, WTF? It is the equivalent of Darth Vader yelling "Nooooo!" in the final (?) cut of RETURN OF THE JEDI to illustrate how upset he is with the Emperor.

I’m not sure if they just renamed 3 to the new title for good or if this is the actual cut on the Showtime channels tomorrow as part of the trilogy marathon, but here ya go in case didn’t get it already...

If anyone's still interested, the movie is currently available to stream for free, albeit with commercials, on the Pluto TV app, along with the first two Godfather movies.
