I saw it on the opening weekend, evening show, “live” in a relatively barren theater despite all the glossy hype, most likely to review it in the local daily at the time, and despite the production value and special effects my reaction wasn’t a gobsmacked-in-good-way “what did I just watch” so much as a ‘that was utterly forgettable and way too on-the-nose weird in spots’. Expectation versus reality indeed. I did admire Jerry Goldsmith’s score enough to add the soundtrack to my collection eventually, and the quality of that prompted me to attempt a reevaluation of the movie when the Paramount Blu-ray hit the bargain racks, but it was just as self-consciously hammy and underwhelming as I’d remembered. To each his own, though, and for those still tempted but hindered by memories of indifference, it seems like it might last long enough to enter into at least one sale. Barring that, I’m assuming there will be a standard edition (?) which I’d be tempted to grab cheap just to go through the supplements. |
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Oh yeah, I meant I was momentarily tempted but after thinking about it I decided not to get it.
|
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Some new stuff. Could’ve sworn they already did SEVENTH CURSE but I’m clearly getting my Hong Kong boutiques mixed up anymore, and doubling it up with WITCH FROM NEPAL puts on my later-on list, for now. :)

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I want Virtuosity but I'm trying to wait until after Jan 5th before pre-ordering when my credit card cycle closes for the month.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I'll get Deranged and Seventh Curse at a future sale. Already own both on DVD. Deranged is a particular favorite, as I've actually read a couple of books on Ed Gein, and this is the movie that comes closest to the real story. And it's funny too. When the narrator actually walks on screen in one scene I nearly pissed myself laughing.
Kind of annoyed that a title in my still-unshipped Black Friday order is on sale today cheaper than what it was on BF. Only by a few bucks, but still... What can anyone tell me about Riddle of Fire? Seems like a fun wholesome adventure, that I'm willing to take a flyer on at such a low price as it is today. |
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Riddle of Fire is fantastic and highly recommended. Yes it's a kids adventure flick but it's not entirely wholesome within the relm of a PG-13 movie. A group of three kids are on a quest to get a "speckled" egg required to bake a pie for their sick Mom. They attempt to steal the egg bought by a poacher and have to find their way back home after stowing away on the poacher's truck. The kids swear, steal, and engage in other questionable behavior. It's also shot on 16mm which results in a really awesome look in the cinematography. I don't want to give anything else away but I'd say it would be a great blind buy.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I can second RIDDLE. I saw it at TIFF midnight with no clue what it was. I was surprised that a film so laden with reference – especially to 80’s kids’ movies and games and adventure literature despite being set in the present – could still be as solid and uniquely eccentric as it was. However, based on the quantity, I’m tempted to hold off for a steeper drop in a future sale. I suspect some of VS’s festival acquisitions don’t sell fast because of the ‘sight unseen’ factor. I’d like to try a bunch of them, but I generally need a steeper discount to justify it. SCARY OF SIXTY-FIRST, which is in the same ‘VS Pictures’ line, was $10 in a sale some time ago, and that particular title was priced too high even at that price, at least for me! RIDDLE is infinitely better, and the current sale price isn’t bad, but I’ll probably hedge my bets. Probably . . .
|
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
$17.99 is more than 60% off and that's for the limited edition boxed set. Well worth it at that price.
|
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Can’t argue that, but . . . :)
I’m also hovering over a couple of others that aren’t high priority and probably have a better chance than RIDDLE of getting even cheaper down the road, but who knows. They’re all in the cart, just in case. |
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Ya sold me. Ordering Riddle.
Also, I see Melusine is re-releasing Ribald Tales of Canterbury. Without a Jon Lovitz intro, unfortunately. It was previously available only on DVD and on Blu in the long out-of-print "5 Years 5 Films" series (which was my introduction to VS). Fun little X-rated movie, sorta keeps the same vibe as the original (more or less...I mean, I had to read Canterbury Tales in high school, in Middle English, and I really had no idea WTF was going on. Maybe this movie is similar, maybe it's not. I don't really know). My two favorite things are the fact that they did their best at period costumes and sets, but made no effort to alter the hair styles, so all the "maidens" still have poofy 80s hair. And the other is in one scene, midway through, well, you know, the male actor has to start reciting lines. And it's rather obvious that the stress of remembering his dialogue had a certain.....negative physical effect if you know what I'm saying and I think you do. Even in high school Chaucer was a figurative boner-killer for me, but apparently he's a literal one too. |
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I saw the Tales of Canterbury release and I'm guessing it'll be the first of many OOp VS labeled porn dvds brought back as Peekarama Blurays. I always liked those double feature dvds as they were always cheap during the sales. They also had the old "feature presentation" theater title cards that pop up before taking you to the menu. I bought one of the newer Peekarama double feature blus and doesn't carry those "feature presentation" intros. Small nitpick but they were fun on the dvds.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Glad I grabbed Cannibal! The Musical when I did. Looks to be out of stock now.
|
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Went with Last Circus, New Life, and Influencer from the OCN Partner label. Last Circus is great and it's got a new remaster.
I see Fade to Black is $11.99 on BD, which is a steal. Touch is also on sale for $19.99. I might add that one to my existing pre-order. |

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I noticed this typically obscure little tease in the most recent eblast regarding the Jan. 2 reveal for the Cinématographe title:
Tomorrow, the 2nd, at exactly 12:01 PM EST, you can look forward to the UHD+BD debut of a 70s studio masterpiece from an American maverick. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Also, it might be too late by the time anyone sees it, but the CRIMINALLY INSANE / SATAN’S BLACK WEDDING double-feature is a pretty decent set. They’re both pretty low-rent films but CRIMINALLY INSANE in particular is a hoot thanks to the dedicated performance of Priscilla Alden as ‘Crazy Fat Ethel’. The set ports over the interviews and commentaries from the earlier 42nd Street Pete discs; the latter tracks are pretty patchy thanks to Pete not indulging the director and his wife more thoroughly, but they do yield some interesting tidbits, as do the interviews. |
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I wasn’t going to buy anything this sale since I still haven’t received my BF order yet, but I ended up ordering the standard edition of the Prophecy.
|
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I had ordered the Full Moon Trilogy during the Partners Month sale, it hasn't shipped yet, so I emailed them about it and they are refunding me the difference. Great customer service and I will end up sending that money back to them since I wanted to get Dr. Terror's House of Horrors and it is on sale today.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Ended up getting Heartbreakers for $8. Their Fun City Editions are all going OOP. Might get Natural Enemies, too.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Dug into my Black Friday order over the weekend. Started with Death Carries a Cane, from the Forgotten Gialli #6 collection. Kinda average giallo, had me for about the first 45-50 minutes, but then started splintering with too many plot lines and characters. Plus it was the back half of a double feature and I was getting a little sleepy towards the end. Will probably give it another go sometime, but I don't think it will ever make my list of top films in the genre.
Saturday night I went with Women on the Run. What an amazing movie that belongs in everyone's collection! It wasn't at all what I thought it would be, a sleazy Cat III-meets kung fu flick (which would still be A-OK in my book!). Most of the sex and nudity is in the beginning of the film, and actually I think it was all shown in the trailer! Instead it's a pretty good crime caper, with a lot of twists and double-crosses, and punctuated by some pretty good fight scenes. Not like a classic Jet Li or Jackie Chan movie, just some short fight sequences that never go too long so as to wear out their welcome. Great movie, already in my top-10 list of Vinegar Syndrom releases. |
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Did you order Riddle of Fire Paff? I'm curious to hear what you think of it.
|
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I did but it was at the Subscriber Week Sale and I haven't even gotten a shipping notice on that one yet. Also keep in mind that my unwatched Vinegar Syndrome pile is HIGH, so I have no idea when I'll get to it.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
In the pet peeves thread, I recently expressed my annoyance with slipcovers that are just a duplicate of the regular cover art. I just wanted to give Vinegar Syndrome (and the Film Movement Classics label they sell) some props for doing a slipcover right! I just got Samurai Wolf 1 & 2 from them and it has a beautiful heavy-stock slipcover with a nice matte finish that has alternate artwork and that's how slipcovers should be done! You can see the regular cover and slipcover in the collection of images for it at VS:

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I don't know how all this works, or if this is even the right thread, but is there a chance that Vinegar Syndrome partner label Gunpowder & Sky could release a special edition of Polite Society? I saw the movie two years ago at my film festival and just loved it. It was on Starz the other night, I gave it another viewing, and still enjoyed it. Then I saw the G&S logo in the closing credits. I noticed the current blu-ray of the movie is bare bones, and this is a movie that just begs for a special edition. G&S did this very thing a few years ago with a great re-release of The Little Hours, I'd love if they did it again with Polite Society (and if you've never seen this movie before, do yourself a favor and watch it ASAP. As mentioned, it's currently in rotation on the Starz network).

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
My copy of Riddle Of Fire finally shipped, looking forward to watching asap. It is the only VS title I have ordered in a very long time, thanks to the praise for this film from folks on this thread.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
My copy shipped today too, but probably won't get it this weekend.

They have kinda gone downhill on their slipcover art in recent releases.

https://vinegarsyndrome.com/collecti...partner-labels The odd one (TAI SATO, HOOKERS ON DAVIE, that Streetfighter doc) border on ‘movie poster-like’ but so many of the others just look like amateurish first-year art school projects - not overly thought out, reflective of the films in the most simplistic ways (as if the artists were only given synopses and didn’t watch them), and chintzy. Worse sometimes is when that artwork carries over to the sleeve, and the sleeve isn’t reversible. I can’t point fingers solely at VS, though. Eureka, 88, and others have been letting some real puzzlers make it through the vetting process. :( |
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
The Carpenter one is especially bad. Won’t stop me from buying it though. I love Wings Hauser.

As for the February releases, meh as well. Cannibal? The Jess Franco movie where Lina Romay keeps her clothes on for the entire film? No thanks to that one as well. |
Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Anyone seen Hideo Gosha’s Violent Streets? It’s one of the VS releases I’m considering for a blind buy.
Also been thinking about The Quiet Earth. I’ve never seen it, but I am drawn to post-apocalyptic sci-fi. Anyone recommend it? |

I liked both of these. I don’t own them, but they were definitely worth seeing. Looks like QUIET EARTH might be the one to grab sooner as their quantities seem to be getting low. Although it also looks like both are a bit cheaper at Amazon. Also, QUIET EARTH is free on Tubi if you’re looking to test drive it a little first.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
So I got Sliver on 4k from one of my local stores that carries VS movies called Vintage Stock. I haven't watched it in years but damn this movie is boring. Maybe it'll take me a time or two watching it again to like it. How did everyone here like Riddle of Fire that just bought it?

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
I finally watched Champange and Bullets last night. A long OOP VSA movie but highly sought after on ebay today. It's like the holy grail of bad movies but not entertaining and just boring. I think Wings Hauser had a drink in every one of his scenes.

I rented it off of Amazon Prime. It was just titled as Champange and Bullets.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
March!
March is here and madness is about to ensue with another unparalleled lineup of releases from Vinegar Syndrome! Kicking off the month is the world UHD + BD debut of director Richard Loncraine's film of playwright Dennis Potter’s absolutely twisted psychological thriller, BRIMSTONE & TREACLE (1982)! This release was years in the making and well worth the wait, boasting a beautiful new 4K restoration from the original camera negative, supervised by director Richard Loncraine and DP Peter Hannan. Plus, we even got a brand new select scenes audio commentary with star and composer (via The Police), Sting! https://d3k81ch9hvuctc.cloudfront.ne...975c00734.jpeg Next up, a Hong Kong double so shocking and out there they almost defy description: Hung-Chuen Lau’s DEVIL FETUS (1983) + Lam Ngai Kai’s HER VENGEANCE (1988) at last head to Blu-ray, newly restored and exclusively graded by VS! These feats of stylish grotesquery remain two of the most shocking films to ever come from Golden Harvest and have never looked better. Plus, we’re proudly offering DEVIL FETUS in its uncensored original theatrical version, while HER VENGEANCE is presented in both its shocking Cat III cut along with its alternate Cat IIB reissue version. https://d3k81ch9hvuctc.cloudfront.ne...5ce74c41d.jpeg Finally, for VS, we’re up to FORGOTTEN GIALLI VOLUME 8, which again collects a trio of loved, lost, and out their wonders from the greatest film genre of all: the giallo. This time we’re presenting a brand new restoration of Alberto Negrin’s ultra-sleazy and star studded RINGS OF FEAR (1978), crammed with a seductive slate of all new interviews, Tano Cimarosa’s never-officially-on-disc REFLECTIONS IN BLACK (1975), and Demofilo Fidani's extra rare and trashy AAA GOOD-LOOKING MASSEUSE OFFERS HER SERVICES (1972) in a stunning new restoration. Whether you’ve seen all or none of these sexy, violent, and wholly over-the-top whodunits, you’ve never seen them looking as beautiful as they do here. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1740594628 https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1740591867 https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1740593384 https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1740607056 Plus, from VSL, we’re delighted to present the Blu-ray debut from one of arthouse cinema’s true legends, Peter Greenaway, with BELLY OF AN ARCHITECT (1987). Combining Greenaway’s visual mastery with a darkly humorous study of a man in crisis (played by Brian Dennehy in one of his most commanding performances), we’ve undertaken a new restoration of its original negative and are proudly presenting this masterpiece of squirm inducing emotional as you’ve never been able to experience it. On the other end of the spectrum, Degausser Video has prepared their latest foray into Mexican weirdness with the violent and gritty no-budget slasher, crime, and action spectacular, Ángel Sancho’s 38 ESPECIAL (1992)! Restored from the original video master, this jaw dropper offers a barrage of bad-taste sleaze and is making its English friendly home video debut on both Blu-ray and VHS (of course). Distribpix + Something Weird have prepared another doozy with two tantalizing jaw-droppers from one of exploitation cinema’s most notorious figures: Joel M. Reed (Bloodsucking Freaks), with the world Blu-ray debut of Reed’s first two features: CAREER BED (1968) and SEX BY ADVERTISEMENT (1968). These two are wild, as they mix bawdy humor, soap opera satire, mondo film structuring, and a performance from Honey Hunter so over the top, you’ll be quoting her for weeks. Plus, the (combined) supporting cast includes Jennifer Welles and Georgina Spelvin. What’s not to love? Although the Joel Reed double is available at both VS and our sister site Mélusine, you’ll need to head over to Mélusine to pick up our latest from Peekarama, which brings to Blu a set of sensual spectaculars starring John Holmes, Annette Haven, Desiree West, Sharon Thorpe, Leslie Bovee, and more! https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1740615418 https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1740615334 https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1740615467 https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1740167373 A new month means new merch, including fresh shirts and new skate deck variants, plus a VS site exclusive variant of the soundtrack to Shudder’s THE SADNESS! With all this excitement, we hope you haven’t forgotten to pick up of complete February slate, including: the gritty supernatural thriller THE POSSESSION OF JOEL DELANEY uncensored and on 4K UHD, Jess Franco’s outrageous WHITE CANNIBAL QUEEN, Wings Hauser in THE CARPENTER, Tilda Swinton in FEMALE PERVERSIONS, a coming-of-age classic with JOY OF SEX, and the Mexican horror masterpiece THE MANSION OF MADNESS. They’re all in stock and shipping right now! https://d3k81ch9hvuctc.cloudfront.ne...bb5acdcc9.jpeg Finally, we’ve got a whopping 17 new Partner Label releases, including the horror classic CANNIBAL GIRLS on Blu from Canadian International, CANNIBAL ORGY from Bleeding Skull, BIRTH/REBIRTH + SPOONFUL OF SUGAR from Shudder, the Filipino horror rarity KISAPMATA from Kani, and a double dose of Bruce LaBruce with his latest twisted fusion of sex and political eye poking with THE VISITOR from Circle Collective + the delectably perverse SAINT-NARCISSE from Film Movement. Check them all out now! Shop Partner Labels Heads up: As we did with Black Friday 2024, we’re moving the Halfway to Black Friday 2025 Flash Pre-Order to the beginning of May, so roughly 3-4 weeks before the Sale itself. It’s too early to start giving hints, but we can assure you this Halfway lineup will blow away not just every previous Halfway selection, but a good number of our previous Black Friday reveals… We have a new VSP in town, with a bloody vengeance, in the form of director Austin Snell’s 16mm slasher-western, THEY CALL HER DEATH. It’s making the rounds right now exclusively in theaters, before a home video and digital release later this year. Watch for it! |
