When does Showgirls release? It doesn’t say on site for some reason.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

It's now for sale through the VS website and will start shipping out after the sale.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

Impressive that they’d put together such a packed edition for Godfrey Ho’s UNDEFEATABLE. Saw that on VHS back in the day. And I still have my BLOODY MARY KILLER Hong Kong VCD here.

Both films are absolute shit. BLOODY MARY is one of the rare Hong Kong movies I rated a 1 out of 10. And the US. version barely rates higher. The “infamous” final fight — as VS labels it in the description, and which is briefly glimpsed in their new trailer — is indeed “infamous” for all the wrong reasons, and I question their claim that it gave the film any kind of “true cult status”. But hey, hype sells.

I think I mentioned this in another thread here some time ago that Godfrey Ho’s movies are such notorious frankenstein jobs that they’ll potentially allow some of these boutiques to keep gouging us for years thanks to all the versions he and his pals shat into different markets back in the day. I mean, really, 4K for this thing? 😄 Admittedly, as a Hong Kong completist, I’d be tempted by a Blu-only edition, but that doesn’t seem to be an offering, socashgrab! I’d love to see the extras, though, so maybe it will last until a sale.

- - - - -

I’d like to get NINJA IN THE CLAWS OF THE CIA — on sale, some day — but the unseemly tales that surfaced (albeit somewhat under the radar) around the time of their NEW YORK NINJA edition regarding actor-director John Liu and his possible/probable underage sex-trafficking activities in Spain and Taiwan during his active filmmaking years (and the likely reason he lives off the grid in Vietnam to this day) — as well as his ghoulish inclusion of actual plane crash wreckage and burning corpses in this film (!) — makes me wonder if VS is hoping those associations stay under the radar so they can spruce up and keep selling his otherwise amusingly awful vanity projects. Decisions, decisions.

EDIT: The more I think about this, VS releasing Liu’s NINJA movie seems like they’re asking for trouble, or . . . maybe putting it out there to move the discussion of his crimes to the forefront in the hopes of getting him captured? Man, who knows! Apparently VS was apprised of the sordid affair just prior to the street date of NEW YORK NINJA a few years back, and acknowledged (and downplayed) it in a Facebook-only reply) so they absolutely didn’t choose this title without some kind of ulterior motive. I’m just curious now to see whether that motive will become clear if there’s any kind uproar over this release.

I should receive my copy of Showgirls tomorrow. That "other place" has reported an audio issue with the 5.1 track. There is a sync problem with the surrounds that causes an echo, especially with the musical parts. The problem isn't there with the 2.0 track, of course. Some say VS will probably do a disc replacement.

And there is an issue with the subtitles.

Bluelitespecial 06-19-23 10:18 AM

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

If there is a reported issue Vinegar Syndrome is good about issuing replacement discs. I have yet to get a shipping notice for my sale order.

I got my shipping notice on the 12th.

According to tracking, the movie is in KC now. Just gotta wait for delivery tomorrow.

I watched the movie the other night and did not notice any problem with the audio until it was pointed out to me. I've written a full review that will be posted tomorrow. While I will concede that there is a very subtle audio sync issue between the fronts and surrounds, I doubt that anyone who isn't a professional musician or audio engineer is likely to notice it. My $.02.

The color difference from the older MGM Blu-ray is a more substantial (and potentially controversial) change to the movie.

Holy shit, Josh, I love the layout of your site, dude! The screengrabs and comparisons were awesome. Glad you focused on the sound, The kids over at that other forum, along with some insiders, say that the rear channels are screwed up -- they play in (in)reverse of each other or some shit. They say if you must watch it, then go for the 2.0 soundtrack instead of the 5.1 one that needs fixing,

Got my disc in the mail this morning.

I took a peek into that loony bin. As usual, they're blowing up a small (if legitimate) issue into THE WORST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ANYTHING IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE WORLD! :)

It is a welcome change just jumping straight into the movie. And the packaging is great. VS did a great job with it. Yeah the VIP edition had all that crap but it came in a big box.

Got my set today. Backing it up now.
Based on what I've read, the audio thing isn't going to bother me.
But the subtitle issue is a bit disappointing since I generally keep them on for the most part.
Any chance 'fixed' subtitles will be shared elsewhere? I'd love to be able to just drop a fixed subtitle file onto my Plex server.

Vinegar syndrome just posted on their Facebook page they are doing a replacement disc for the showgirls 4k disc. I'm guessing they ship it to you automatically if you bought it through their website.

Yep, they've done that before. Flesh for Frankenstein... Beastmaster... every time there's an issue, they're on it.

Well I finally got my shipping notice for my halfway to black Friday order. I should get it by Monday. The showgirls replacement disc is supposed to ship some time in July.

Does it just affect Showgirls 4K? Is the Blu-ray safe?

Bluelitespecial 06-21-23 06:34 PM

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

From their Facebook page it says both the 4k disc and bluray are affected. It's the 5.1 audio track that's bad on both discs.

Same issue on both UHD and Blu-ray. I expect they got a bad file from MGM.

I read the subtitles are correct on the blu ray. If that’s true, it should be easy enough to rip the subtitles from the blu and mix into the audio/video from the 4k.

Your lazy refusal to read posts that people have already written to explain questions you are very late in asking is infuriating and a huge waste of everyone else's time. The information you want is already in the thread, and not even very far back. Scroll up a little.

To be clear, the issue people have complained about does not affect the dialogue channel. Dialogue and all sounds in the front channels are in sync with the video on both the 5.1 and 2.0 soundtracks.

The flaw in this disc is that the surround channels have a very tiny delay, putting them very slightly out of sync with the front channels. This is only audible in music, and sounds like the track has a little extra reverb. Considering that most of the electronica dance and club music in the film already has tons of reverb anyway, most viewers will probably never notice it without being given a time code and told what to listen for.

If you're experiencing dialogue out of sync with the visuals, that's probalby an equipment problem on your end. Try adjusting the audio delay settings in your A/V receiver.

Now the defective 4k disc of Showgirls won't even play in my player. The disc just goes to the menu screen and won't let me select anything.

I've read that they're shipping the non-subscriber, non-flash-preorders now. This is my first time falling into that group, I think (never subscribed, but I do typically do at least one flash preorder), and I haven't gotten a shipping notification yet either. These usually do take a while to ship out, and the schedule is pretty much in step with how they pitched it.

Email from VS:

This email is to notify you of a disc error affecting our release of SHOWGIRLS that you purchased from VinegarSyndrome.com.

Due to recently discovered issues with the 5.1 surround track on our SHOWGIRLS Blu-ray and UHD discs, as well as some issues with the captions, we are implementing an automated disc replacement program for customers that purchased direct from VinegarSyndrome.com.

There is no need to contact us. Your replacement discs are expected to ship out mid-July.

Below is a coupon code good for $5 off an order placed during our Summer Subscriber Week event, which begins this Saturday, July 1st at 12:01 PM EDT. This code is tied to your VS account, so you must be logged in for the code to work.

I got the same email with a coupon code. What else is worth buying from them, for someone who isn't so much into super-obscure '70s sleaze flicks? Looks like Road House is no longer available.

I don’t think Roadhouse is sold out. It’s partner month so all VS releases get pulled from the site until July 1rst.
