I have the Japanese 4K release and I guarantee that this will have the same transfer.

And still no Production Report. Easily the best supplement out there for this film, and yet no discs seem to include it outside of the old Criterion LD. Art the rights really that difficult to get? And surely it's not deemed unworthy just because it's in SD?

I still have the original Bandai Visual Blu-ray that was annoyingly windowboxed on all four sides of the frame. Never got the Funimation reissue, which I believe corrects that. Does anyone know if the Funimation version was actually remastered, or did they just scale up the image to cut off the black bars?

Does the 4k transfer have this problem?

This video compares frames from the Japanese 4K to the remastered Blu-ray. I know YT can't be trusted for resolution, per se, but the rather obvious (in some instances) greenish shift in colours and the blown out look of some of those really bright whites give me pause. I suppose it's all minor quibbling now on a 30-year-old film.

Funimation release is in SDR and not HDR?

That sucks, if true. Especially as expensive as it is to pre-order.

I pre-ordered the Akira 4K from Funimation because it was listed as "Limited", and I've learned my lesson on limited releases. However, I'm hearing more and more that makes me wonder if I shouldn't cancel and wait for reviews. And the price hasn't gone down.....

Re: Akira 4K UHD - December 22, 2020

The Funimation supposedly does have SDR instead of HDR, which almost makes it a pointless UHD release. No one is quite sure if this was intentional by Funimation or a condition of the license holder.

The reports are coming from UK (Manga Entainment, subsidiary of Funimation). It doesn't look like there are any official update from Manga so far. Review linked below mentions the German release from Leonine is presented with HDR.

AKIRA 4K Limited Edition: HDR Disc Replacement How-To

The highly anticipated AKIRA 4K, featuring the film in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) is out now, and we know some of you want to experience the film in the highest-quality format possible.

Beginning in February 2021, an HDR (High Dynamic Range) version of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of AKIRA will be available. Funimation is committed to making sure that this historic film matches the artistry in which Otomo-san intended, as well as in the format you want to enjoy it in.

We know this might cause some headaches, but bear with us as we make sure you get the latest version of the release at no additional cost.

For those of you who would like to request the 4K HDR version of AKIRA, please send an email to [email protected] (US/CA) or [email protected] (UK/IRE) with “AKIRA 4K” as the subject, and provide your name, mailing address, email address and proof of purchase (receipt or confirmation email and photo of the disc).

If you’re unable to provide a receipt or confirmation email as proof of purchase, you will be requested to send your current disc to Funimation. So fret not if you get the AKIRA 4K Limited Edition for Christmas, you can still upgrade your disc!

From there, you’ll receive a return authorization number, and an address to mail your disc if needed.

On our end, we’ll make sure the 4K UHD discs are ready to be shipped by February 2021, and we can’t wait for you to continue to experience AKIRA on the biggest screen you can find!

*Please note that the Akira 4K Limited Edition release had an error on the back of packaging and onsert. We are aware that the packaging references a digital version of the movie being available, but at this time there is no digital code available for the 4K release of this movie.

Oof. This sounds like a mess.

Going to wait until next year after the Replacement Discs go out and see what the general consensus is then.

Yeah, I'll wait until the replacements are in circulation.

I have a hunch that Funimation rushed Akira out in time for Christmas and didn't take the usual prep time for such a release.

It's the cheapest it's ever been right now. Might be worth it , if you don't mind swapping out the 4K disk via mail.

TomOpus 07-02-21 02:12 PM

Re: Akira 4K UHD - December 22, 2020

I'd jump all over that but apprehensive about that shipping timeframe and then going through the replacement thing.

I’ve bought so many versions on DVD and Bluray and it’s not even a favorite movie. My current Blu will do.

I signed up for the replacement right after the link became available. I never got the replacement disc but did get a "How Would You Rate the Support You Received?" email.

I responded with the "Bad, I'm Unsatisfied" option and send them another email but have heard nothing.

Has there been a decent comparison done of the Japan 4K HDR disc vs. the US 4K (SDR or HDR) discs?
