If I'm watching .mkv/.mp4 files I just use a USB thumb drive and plug it into my blu-ray player.

If you have a newer tv with a USB port, you can plug it directly into your tv, too. But my blu-ray player has an easily accessible USB port, and it's quicker and easier to do it that way than reach around the back of my tv.

I just worry that the files for 4k77 and the like would be gigantic,

Depends on your definition of gigantic. The 4K83 UHD with DNR is about 71GB, which is the largest of the Star Wars "preservation" files that I've encountered. But you can get a 512GB thumb drive for about $65 to hold all the versions you may want.

Empire is out of stock at Amazon and Return of the Jedi is $13.99 and A New Hope is $17.99

There is, but it’s the same lackluster deal it’s been since Best Buy rolled out their first Black Friday preview sales weeks ago.

I think $199.99 is the floor for the set.

I think I paid that much for the most recent Harmy versions of the entire trilogy on BDs with a crap ton of extras (actually each came with a bonus disc as well) on ebay. No regrets.

Re: Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (Blu-ray & Ultra HD Blu-ray; 3/31/20)

I bought the 3-disc sets of ANH and ESB from eBay. Good upgrade, IMO. I don't have a 4k player yet, though.

Newer transfer is on the BDs, e.g. new BD is 38GB vs 20GB for old BD. Harmy had used the old BD as a source.

I will buy the other saga sets.

Finally broke down and accepted reality. I bought what will probably be my "forever copies" of the OT.

Re: Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (Blu-ray & Ultra HD Blu-ray; 3/31/20)

I mean, the best official copy of the GOAT are the Limited Edition DVDs that had the laserdisc masters as a "bonus" disc. I believe they have slightly better resolution/detail than the Laserdiscs, due to the limitations of the LD format.

Personally, I have the letterboxed VHS collectors set from the early 90s, and have had it since the early 90s.

Not my photo, one I found online, but I have the same set:

Of course, I also have some unofficial HD copies of GOAT now.

Yes, I kept these, sold off the non original versions, popped these discs in the first DVD release boxset box and kept the bonus disc featuring Empire of Dreams.

The Tag Line for this 1995 release was The Originals One Last Time. I was following the news of the Special Editions at that time, and knew what it meant, but most people had no idea about them

I have those DVDs (found them last year at a thrift store for $3), and I kinda think the LD might look a smidge better because they're analog and the DVD is digital and it doesn't blow up quite as well on a larger display. I was still able to enjoy them on my 60" display, but it was clearly an inferior presentation.

I found a loose copy of Empire of Dreams at a thrift store and listed my silver box trilogy on eBay. Still hasn't sold, the market is flooded with them.

Literally nobody thought that meant they would be forever removed from circulation. Nobody in their right mind had that thought, it was always assumed to be that particular VHS release.

I was running a video store at the time, and was a subscriber to Star Wars Insider. I knew what they meant in 1995

I got those from K-Mart but without the fancy box

Did they really have THX sound and what kind of TV could support that in the 90's?

I never opened them but since they are VHS I doubt anybody would pay a premium price if I decided to sell them.

No. I hate, loathe and despise the Prequels, Special Editions and Sequel trilogy.

I vowed not to buy any of the blu-ray sets until the OOT was released. Here I am 16 years later, still no Star Wars blu-rays.

Of course I do have Disney+ and did watch all the Star Wars movies through that so I’m no quite as abstinent as I claim to be.

I still didn’t buy the Blu-rays though…

Ok, maybe somebody in the business. But just regular folks that just liked watching movies would never consider that to be a thing where they would stop making sets of the most popular movies ever.

THX isn’t a sound format, it’s a QA process. It was supposed to get extra attention during the transfer process. It used to mean something but they started putting it on any old crap.

Too much for not enough. Leaving out Solo and Rogue One didn’t make any sense to me.
