THE RESTORATION

After nearly a decade of research and planning, this is a ground up restoration by Network’s award-winning in-house team working from the best available materials – from first generation 2-inch videotape masters to surviving negative and print film material, scanned in 2K. The wildly varying picture sources have been graded scene-by-scene and intensively cleaned up.

State of the art upscaling of Standard Definition videotape has been deployed with careful use of noise reduction for both video and film grain, resulting in a vastly improved viewing experience all round on Blu-ray High Definition format, far exceeding anything previously available.

I just found out about this via a restoration comparison video posted on the Monty Python Youtube Channel:

Network has the worldwide rights to this restoration, at least at the moment, so there doesn't look like there will be a US release in the immediate future, which is why the Network release is region-free. Not mentioned on the Network page is that they've made two versions, one 50i and one 60i, and which version you get depends on your shipping address, so US addresses will get the 60i version.

Network will probably eventually release all the series individually, and also a "standard" edition of the complete series, although that may take a while. It took them 2 years to release their standard release of The Prisoner after releasing their limited edition.

Streaming likely in the wrong frame rate. Funny how they can put THIS out on Blu-ray though but not many recent shows shot in HD.

Wasn’t a lot of it on tape? All that will be upconverted. I’ve wanted to own this series for years but the DVDs were always so expensive and it was easy enough to find on streaming. Maybe if this can be had at a decent price.

I already have the 2008 UK PAL complete boxset, which I got for like $10, so I'll have to wait for reviews to see if this is that much of an upgrade.

The Network product page does mention the use of upconverted footage. All the studio footage was shot on tape, but external shots in skits, and sometimes whole skits, were shot on film. Also, all the Terry Gilliam animations were done on film as well. So there's a fair amount of film footage.

Also, for the studio taped footage, while it's technically SD, they went back to the 2" tape masters, so it should be of higher quality. Also, it was shot in PAL, so for the US, the 1080i60 is going to be an upconversion of the 576i PAL signal, instead of the 480i downconversion we've previously gotten on DVD here. So there's going to be a bit more resolution for the upconversion to pull from.

Edit: there's also a DVD release of the remastered Series 1 for those who think Blu-ray isn't worth it, although it's UK PAL DVD only at the moment, and you only save £3 over the Series 1 Blu-ray.

Just came across this video showing one of the original episode 2" master tapes being played. This video was released before the Blu-ray set was announced, but in hindsight was clearly work being done for that set.

The description on the video is almost better than the video itself:

The tape is one of two original transmission tapes of "Monty Python's Flying Circus" that slipped through the net when the BBC made their digital masters in the early 1990s. The episode, "Déjà Vu”, the third episode of the second series, should have been part of that archiving process but for some reason the BBC's poorer quality sales copy was archived instead.

According to the paperwork, the tape hasn't been played since 1979, but it seemed fitting that it should be resurrected in Monty Python's 50th anniversary year.

The tape is a two-inch quadruplex recording, a format developed by Ampex in the 1950s. It was the workhorse of television broadcasters from 1958 until the late 1980s when it was superseded by more flexible formats. Ampex quad machines haven't been manufactured since the early 1980s, but working machines can still be found. This video shows the first time we played back "Déjà Vu", almost certainly the first time it has been played since the 1970s.

Other highlights for me are the extra content on Scott of the Sahara, Ken Clean Air System, Ursula Hitler...all of it really. The only disappointment was not finding a broadcast quality version of material such as Mr. Neutron. Most of it is fully restored, but there are two sections from videotape where we had to go with an inferior quality recording. But it's presented in context.

I'll try and answer as best I can, but some material may be included in the Andrew Pixley book, so I don't want to tread on his toes.

In 'How to Recognise Different parts of the Body', no original broadcast versions survived. For a time, we were going to use an off-air VHS to replace the sound. However, circumstances changed and the original sound is intact on the episode as presented. Once people have had a chance to see what we've done, I can go into more detail, but I suspect that people will be rewriting Python history once the Bluray is released. Girl from Ipanema was on both the original broadcast and repeat and I have no idea where the 'Jeannie With The Dark Brown Hair' appeared in the timeline. But it's not on any BBC version, so we've not gone there.

Silly Bunt. Well, unlike the Bus Conductor sketch, that was cut during the original VT edit, so only appeared in scripts and to those lucky few present at the studio recording. Bus conductor was in an early edit which did in fact survive until around 1980. More on that later, but the only copy we could find wasn't good enough quality to put back in to the episode and it wasn't present in the original broadcast anyway.

What I can say is that there was a big change in October 1979. Those with an historical perspective will understand the significance of that date and I'll be able to elaborate further once the Bluray has been released.

The reinstatement in 'Salad days' is in fact the restoration of the 'Biggles Dictates a Letter' sketch. Sometime after 1979, the original tape was damaged at the BBC. It was physically ripped in two and when it was repaired, almost 3 seconds were missing. I can tell you now that it is a miracle that we have been able to fully restore it seamlessly. I know that the Sony release was intact, but that release was heavily compromised in quality.

Finally, the 'And Now for Something Completely Different' feature is the title of a short film made by film student Vic Jamison in 1970. It's a remarkable thing, behind the scenes footage of Monty Python series two being shot on location with contemporary interviews with the Pythons.

But that aside, the sheer amount of negative material that I have tracked down, including material in the BBC archive that they didn't know they had is remarkable.

One further point as it has been discussed here. Someone said that "interlacing won't make any visual difference". This is true from the standpoint of already having an interlaced version of some sort. The image will look the same (although unrestored) if you watch the older, zoomed in version side by side.

He also said "I defy you to see modern interlacing running at speed. It's a lot easier to see frame dropping or doubling. That is what causes judder."

Whatever he is talking about (and I haven't a clue what he actually means) interlaced video material is a lot smoother in visual appearance than the current 24/25/30p alternatives. Studio content of Monty Python's Flying Circus originated in 50i. That's 50 pictures per second for the studio content. Because I was concerned about how that material might be presented on certain older LCD screens, I did consider creating a 720/50p master, which would have created an entirely progressive master. However, this would have compromised the quality of the large amount of film content I had found. So you have smooth 50i for the UK etc... and extremely good 60i versions for the US, Canada and Japan. I have viewed the check discs of these and you will be hard pressed to tell the difference between the 50i and 60i versions. You would have to play them side by side to see a difference and anyone in the US, Canada or Japan used to the old conversions will see a revelatory upscale in quality.

However, we upscaled using different kit. We looked at both software and hardware upscaling and did tests using two different hardware scalers. In the end, we ended up using the identical upscaling and conversion solution we use for Doctor Who.

When I went back to source, I also captured entirely from PAL sources using the BBC's Transform Decoder. This has never been done before for Monty Python. In total, only two episodes are entirely new transfers from original Quad tapes. These are Archaeology Today and Deja Vu, the original TX masters. I also transferred both copies of the Python's Quad dubs of Spam. The BBC's tape is badly scratched. Unfortunately, it must have been damaged prior to 1979, because both the Python's masters have the scratch copied in.

When I went through the Python's quad tapes, I also identified other useful recordings. The two most important (apart from the two original TX tapes) were Salad Days and How to Recognise Different Parts of the Body. Salad Days features the intact 'Biggles Dictates a Letter' sketch. The BBC's TX master was damaged in the 1980's and the tape torn in two. About 3 seconds was lost from the tape, but the Python's quad (a dub of the same tape prior to the damage) was intact. The tape I found of 'How to Recognise Different Parts of the Body' turned out to be the BBC Enterprises copy of the original TX master. It was made about three months prior to the 1971 repeats. The repeat version of this episode was cut; the pre-title scene was overdubbed with music. Subsequently, the original TX master was wiped. Although I had access to an off-air NTSC VHS recording, a broadcast copy was much more desirable, so I elected to use the pictures from the repeat version (which were the same generation as the repeat, but unchanged) and the sound from the Ents master, which is as the original show.

I also checked other master tapes in the Python's archive, including Book at Bedtime, How Not to be Seen, It's a Living etc... in the hope that I might find longer copies from original tapes or second best, NTSC masters. I only found one original NTSC tape, Face the Press.

For the rest of the episodes, I used the BBC's D3 copies of the original tapes. The BBC no longer officially archive these tapes, because they have been transferred to new component masters. However, I wanted to make uncompressed capture files via the Transform Decoder, hence going back to the D3's.

I did find some discrepancies. The BBC's master of Full Frontal Nudity was a salvage copy made back in the late 70's. It was really in a pretty poor state. However, in the Python's archive, I found the BBC Enterprises master, made in March 1970, but there was a D3 copy of this tape in the BBC Archive made in 1993. As it was a much better transfer and the same physical generation as the salvage copy, I used that.

The downside is that the cleaner sharper pictures reveal some of the PAL artefacts and other artefacts that can't be removed, that were previously hidden in noise. The first picture shows how fine detail (such as the mesh on a dalek) can cause cross colour, even with a top-quality professional decoder. Arrived today... and I'll be waiting for a replacement. Thanks to UPS for kicking the box around! The inner cardboard separating the seasons all ripped. Actually the way this is packaged, I bet the damage returns are going to be thru the roof.

OK, my copy arrived today, and the box is damaged. The separators between series sets were all torn out. Interestingly, one separator was slipped into the booklet, suggesting it was torn off during assembly, not during shipping.

Not being able to gauge the construction of that box was the single thing that kept me from placing an order for this. Bummed to hear these stories. Might just stick to the individual season sets and forego all the goodies unless I can find a deal that doesn't require shipment. :( Too bad Arrow didn't release this; that might've involved sturdier construction.

Mine also has a crushed corner from where the shipping box landed en route... Hopefully their fix is to send out just the box with nothing else in it. Otherwise I see set after set coming damaged.

At least the set was in plastic as my UPS driver decided to soak the top of the box before delivering. :mad2:

I could never get over the *EXTRA LOUD* laugh-track this show had.
Sure, some laughing I can take, especially if it's in-studio, but it was always so blaringly loud, like nails on a chalkboard. If they were able to at least turn that down for this release, it'd be an instant purchase for me.

I got the same canned response today. I told them it wasn't the delivery partners, it was a design flaw with the box. And it's not a "handful of people".

Despite the packaging issues... the restoration is amazing. Watched two episodes last night and very pleased with the results.

I agree. I've watched three episodes so far and they look great. The individual season sets are well packaged too, it's just the box they all come in that's the problem. I'm going to try and get into the season 1 book over the weekend.
