GODZILLA: THE SHOWA-ERA FILMS, 19541975 The Criterion Collection - October 29, 2019

In 1954, an enormous beast clawed its way out of the sea, destroying everything in its path—and changing movies forever. The arresting original Godzilla soon gave rise to an entire monster-movie genre (kaiju eiga), but the King of the Monsters continued to reign supreme: in fourteen fiercely entertaining sequels over the next two decades, Godzilla defended its throne against a host of other formidable creatures, transforming from a terrifying symbol of nuclear annihilation into a benevolent (if still belligerent) Earth protector. Collected here for the first time are all fifteen Godzilla films of Japan’s Showa era, in a landmark set showcasing the technical wizardry, fantastical storytelling, and indomitable international appeal that established the most iconic giant monster the cinema has ever seen.

All Hail the King

This October, we’re celebrating the arrival of spine number 1000, and it’s a collector’s set fit for the granddaddy of all movie monsters! Our landmark edition gathers for the first time all the Godzilla films from Japan’s Showa era:

Godzilla (1954)
Godzilla Raids Again (1955)
King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963)
Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966)
Son of Godzilla (1967)
Destroy All Monsters (1968)
All Monsters Attack (1969)
Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971)
Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972)
Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973)
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)
Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

Was hoping the set might be in a Zatoichi-style box, something more shelf-friendly, but this still looks amazing.

Oh shit, Old school Godjira. That's awesome. $180 bucks though. I'll look for it when it's at least 1/2 off MSRP.

Criterion just went into God(zilla) Mode. I may not stop drooling for awhile.

I just might be the only one who has no interest in Godzilla.

Re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays, Part II

I am interested in the set but not the price, even at half off. Getting a Bergman set that has twice as many movies and then some for not a lot more makes it difficult to shell out this for 8 discs. Get it under a hundred and we'll talk. It is a nice looking set though.

Just noticed no Rodan or Mothra. Boo, I know Mothra just came out from Mill Creek, but where's my favorite giant Bird of Death?

I don't really have much interest in it. I do have the first film. If anything, this is something I would check out via the Criterion Channel.

Re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays, Part II

Any chance these will be released separately on DVD?

I have all of these, except for "Son" and "vs Mecha" and don't have any desire to rebuy any of these.

Or maybe the prices of the DVDs on those two will crater.

Rodan was included in the initial announcement that Criterion had acquired the G films a few years ago.

Hopefully they'll be on the Criterion channel and I'll save all the money.

No, I'm the same - I find them to be really boring and/or too silly.
Cool looking set and all, but a hard pass for me.

Re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays, Part II

No interest, here, either.

I'll check out the first one one CriterionChannel.com, but zero interest in buying a large box set of it.

I enjoyed them when I was a kid, but they're pretty cheesy, from what I recall.

Re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays, Part II

I have all of these but on a mix of DVDs and Blu-rays. I'd love to get this and have a unified set, but I'll have to make sure I don't lose any of the extras.
