Re: The One and Only Kino Lorber and Olive Films Blu-Ray Thread

So why do some KL titles get great extras and some are barebones? it seems some get none and some get a good treatment. why is that?

Re: The One and Only Kino Lorber and Olive Films Blu-Ray Thread

Kino Lorber’s response:

We reached out to Mr. Lynch via email to oversee and color grade a new 4K transfer (from the original camera negative) and get his approval on the dozen or so extras we had planned to include. Once we knew he was not interested in working with us, we had no choice, but to go ahead with the current Universal master and the few extras we had already produced and acquired. To our surprise, the master in question was a very good one, so we were happy to release it with some extras. We found out later that the extras and packaging also had to be approved by him (not the norm) and we sent email after email without one response. We delayed the release by a month, hoping we could at least get him to approve the trailer, the essay and our packaging, at this point we knew the interview and commentary were not possible, but after a few more weeks, we dropped the essay, the trailer and changed our front art to the previously approved DVD art. The BD only includes the film on a dual-layered BD50 disc, maxing out the feature at 30mbps with 5.1 surround and 2.0 lossless audio. We were planning to take the high road and not play the blame game, but after his tweet this weekend, we felt like we had to respond.

We’re still huge David Lynch fans and are proud to release one of his masterpieces on Blu-ray.

Re: The One and Only Kino Lorber and Olive Films Blu-Ray Thread

Kino says Lynch ghosted them.
Deming says Kino ghosted him.

It's all a damn shame.

I wonder if the Kino version is therefore identical to the HDX version on Hulu. I'm pretty sure that one's not the MK2 master on all the non-USA BDs...

The statement from Kino says they got the master from Universal. Presumably, it's the one from the old DVD edition, which was indeed different than the MK2 master.

Lynch being Lynch...he wants to be paid to approve a new master. KL didn't want to play that game with him, because frankly they don't have deep pockets like Universal and/or Criterion.

That's exactly how I read the situation.

Most directors take a fee when personally "supervising" a video release. If not directly, in the form of payment for an audio commentary or the like.

Scrolling down to the comments, the first response is from the cinematographer Peter Deming, who blames Kino Lorber.

Oh, What the hell. I’ll still be grabbing it at those 7.99 Kino sales but not paying anymore than that.

Re: Is David Lynch Done With Making Films?

I just read a review on a well-known review website that raves about the video on this Kino release...go figure.
Nonetheless, I'll wait to see if Lynch actually does put out a release based on the "original negative" before springing for the Kino.

I was thinking the same thing. That's what held up the FWWM deleted scenes for years.

Re: David Lynch's Lost Highway (6/25/19)

I got it yesterday ...watched it a bit ago....and I'm still recovering. The movie looked quite nice upscaled on my 4k with Xbox One S . Lynch's complaints are simply him whining, and if he had anything to do with the scrapping of what extras they did have then shame on him.

Re: David Lynch's Lost Highway (6/25/19)

I’m glad I have digital. Only way to go with this no extras crap. Lynch clearly wants only Criterion. Too bad. What is 3 years how long they own rights to movie? Can’t Criterion buy it from them? For hefty price, I assume...

Well, he does have a reputation for being difficult to work with.

Re: David Lynch's Lost Highway (6/25/19)

From Tim Lucas / Video WatchBlog:

Tim Lucas Lost Highway Audio Commentary.

Spoiler:
Last Tuesday, June 25th, Kino Lorber released David Lynch's LOST HIGHWAY (1997) on Blu-ray. For some reason, the disc is proving hard to find on Amazon, but you can use this link to order directly from the Kino Lorber website where the disc is currently on sale at substantial savings.

I'm very happy to report that - despite David Lynch's forewarnings of a release that did not meet his standards - early reviews of the disc have been extremely enthusiastic, with Gary Tooze of DVD Beaver calling it "the definitive edition" of the film, and Dr. Svet Atanasov of Blu-ray.com noting that "the technical presentation is vastly superior" to prior releases both here and abroad. Dr. Atanasov also notes, "Most unfortunately, there are no supplemental features to be found on this release."

As you may have heard, or read here previously, supplementary materials has originally been planned for this fine release. I recorded a feature-length audio commentary that - along with some other materials - had to be scrapped at the last minute, owing to discovered contractual agreements made between Universal and Mr. Lynch that forbade any such supplementation.

Since the rights to my work have reverted to me, and since my time and effort have been remunerated, I've decided to make the unused track freely available as an mp3 download, which can be synched up to the Kino Lorber disc by anyone who may be interested.

Here is a link (right click, download linked file) to a zip file of my commentary, as well as a separate text file with some background and instructions.

Enjoy.

Re: David Lynch's Lost Highway (6/25/19)

Amazon has it back in stock. I got my copy today and watched it tonight. It was ok. Great film but the transfer is a mixed-bag and is definitely not reference material or anywhere near it. The soundtrack is bumps, though.

OK...I guess I'll wait for the DL approved version.
Thanks for that.

And... 3 years later... Janus now has Lost Highway (and Inland Empire)...

The new 4K restoration will be playing at Lincoln Center in June.

I guessed right. When I bought the KL it was a blind buy and I love the movie. I wouldn't mind upgrading when Criterion eventually releases on Blu/4k.

Awesome. If the 4K restoration is playing in June, then maybe we'll get a new disc release by the end of the year. One can hope!
