I stand corrected- wonder how Mill Creek ended up getting those.

Running out of space and buying stuff I already own in a new format would be unnecessary.
I am tempted to buy Toy Story and The Natural.
if the original Star Wars trilogy, the Godfather movies, and Scarface get a 4K release and they are substantially better than the blu-ray versions I will get them.

Scarface should be on the way very soon. It was on a list that leaked from a Russian (I think?) retailer, and quite a few of the other titles on that list have been announced.

Kind of how I am too. I'll upgrade eventually but not really in a hurry. I definitely don't plan to do like I did when I upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray and re-buy a bunch of titles I own. I'll get new releases and some favorites.

That seems in line with the TCL Rokus, so not revolutionary unless you really really really like the Amazon system or something (and Roku has Amazon anyway). Doesn't seem like price is a factor for most, and if it is they probably want a higher end not lower end tv, even if these are incredible for the price (like the TCLs are)

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
I want 4k. I have a perfectly fine tv that does 3d and that's too big to really move to another room in the house, so there's that.
But the main thing is that I have to replace my receiver (which does 4k pass through but not HDR), and the HDMI 2.1 standard wasn't finalized and/or available on equipment. I didn't want to replace my tv and receiver and then want to replace it again in a couple of years. At this rate, if everything is settled (and I'm not sure if it is) I'll probably start upgrading in preparation for the next gen of consoles.
My kid's playroom tv is dying (it's an "ancient" tv that only does 720p) so I've been tempted to replace it, so I may start there.

Damn, that's a nice price for the 55". With tax it comes to $496 shipped for me. I'll think about it.

Costco has a HiSense 58" 4K HDR TV for $350. Seems to get decent reviews except for app issues. I never have heard of them until recently. I was thinking about putting one in my living room instead of the Samsung 58" equivalent for $500.

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
Yeah, I hear ya' brother. Been getting those hints for years.
Seriously, though, I got a 4K set as an upgrade to a 10 year old rear projection. Obviously, I noticed a difference but I also noticed vertical banding that, after three months, drove me too buggy to keep the set. I returned it and set up the old set again...for now. I do admit,I have been purchasing 4K discs but only if they come with BLUs and then, really, only big movies like the MARVEL stuff. There's a store in town that sells them for $20 (only 5 more than regular). I guess it may be future proofing for something I never really do.
I think, like others, it is mainly the "Maaaaan, I don't want to upgrade again."
When I got a blu-ray player (a gift), I did notice a difference from the DVDs. I at first said, ok, I will only go forward purchasing new content on blu and not upgrade. Then I saw some of the restorations on films like The Godfather, Gone with the Wind, etc. and was like, damn, and so I started upgrading. I think I am now at a place where I have upgraded what I wanted on DVD unless I find a blu for like $5. 4K has a harder hill to climb for an upgraded. The recent 2001 release is a good example of what would make me purchase something on 4k.
When the players drop in price like BluRay did I may check it out but, aside from a few vids on Youtube in 4k, the streaming stuff I watched on Netflix didn't really blow me away with how different it was.

The Spears and Munsil 4K calibration discs are about to come out any day now. I think viewers will find a lot to like about HDR's potential once the proper calibration tools are available for Joe Blow.

If Warner Bros treat old films the way they did with their blu-ray releases with crappy picture quality I will pass on their 4K discs.

Will have to get that calibration disc as I've just been eyeballing my settings so far. Sony discs have a few test patterns but nothing really accurate, plus nothing in Dolby Vision which keeps different settings.

Why do that?
Just like any other electronic product, some units don't work right and have to be exchanged for one that does.
There isn't anything inherent in the technology that generates "vertical banding."

FWIW, streaming 4K UHD on NF requires a $5 monthly premium.
Don't pay it and you get 1080p.
Thanks for the info...I'll check it out.

Some problems with new TVs go away after a while- it’s called a “break-in period”. Mine had pretty bad clouding when it was brand new but after 2 years it’s improved infinitely.

The price
$29.99 for just one movie is a lot though it might come with a blu-ray and dvd.

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
Several things.....
I have a 4K Sony XBR-65x850c that looks pretty damn good with regular HD content, but I do use the built-in Netflix and Prime apps if there are 4k movies available.
I rarely buy discs anymore, so I don't want to dump my perfectly good BD player for a new 4k one. I still get discs from Netflix, and they don't have 4k discs to send.
I don't want to spend another $180 for a new Apple tv, since I bought a new one not terribly long ago.
I have DirectTV, but their 4k offering aren't enough to get me to change receivers yet.
And it's all running thru an Integra receiver that was $1400 when new, still works and sounds great. I can't afford to replace it.

Once you get a nice 4K display like one of the better OLEDs, you'll wonder why you waited so long. The jump is massive once you see something under Dolby Vision on a Sony or LG OLED.
