The Karate Kid -- 35th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 4/16/19

From The Digital Bits:

We’ve got a nice bit of official 4K news to start the new week: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing The Karate Kid on 4K in honor of the film’s 35th anniversary. Look for the disc to street on 4/16, following the film’s limited return to theaters across the US on 3/31 and 4/2.

The disc will feature the film remastered in native 4K from the original camera negative, along with a new Dolby Atmos audio mix (you will also get the original stereo and 5.1 mixes). In terms of extras, legacy content will include a “Blu-Pop” Pop-Up Track (with trivia, interviews, and more secrets from the film), audio commentary (with director John G. Avildsen, writer Robert Mark Kamen, and actors Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita), The Way of the Karate Kid multi-part featurette, 3 additional featurettes (Beyond the Form, East Meets West: A Composer’s Notebook, and Life of Bonsai) and the theatrical trailer (on the 4K disc). You’ll also get the all new Remembering The Karate Kid retrospective (featuring new interviews with Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, and Martin Kove – on the 4K disc).

I'm in for this. Loved this movie. Like that this 4K is getting a retrospective extra.

I'm definitely in for this. I wonder if that retrospective will be on the 4K disc only and not on digital.

That does make me chuckle....go physical or go home and cry at your digital collection.

At least give it a digital release to streaming networks.

It is a digital release...on their network. If YouTube is going to keep making the show, they need people to subscribe / watch on their platform. They aren't going to give it to other people. Just pay the $10 and watch it. It is completely worth it.

Re: The Karate Kid -- 35th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 4/16/19

FYI, this comes out tomorrow.

Now down to $19.96

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KZ4TFT9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KZ4TFT9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I pre-ordered back in February, so I'm excited to see this again in 4K. Hopefully sales are good enough to justify Part II getting a 4K upgrade. Mill Creek released 3 and The Next Karate Kid as a cheapie double BD combo a few months ago, so those probably won't get upgrades.

Re: The Karate Kid -- 35th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 4/16/19

I am definitely picking this up in prep for the second season of Cobra Kai . I hope the transfer is worth it!

I now Part III is cartoony but I always preferred it to Part II (with the exception of the prelude that begins Part II). I wish they had just gone ahead and did a Miyagi boxset and put all four out in 4K. I know that is wishful thinking but I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

I didn't know Mill Creek released Part III. Will have to pick that up now.

Yeah, I actually just saw the two pack of The Karate Kid Part III/The Next Karate Kid yesterday. Almost grabbed it but I don’t have the others yet. I might get this 4K release eventually.

looked this up on Amazon and presently $8.03. Snagged it as the individual releases of these 2 are $22.99 each and Amazon states they are "burned on demand". So even better that the Mill Creek should be pressed. Thanks for the heads up.

Just a heads up...reading some of the reviews of the Mill Creek release, every one of them say the picture quality is horrible.

Anyone here want to give an opinion for those who have it?

For the sequels, I have this Region Free - https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Karate-Kid-Master-Collection-Blu-ray/162948/

Seems out of print now and has been updated with this: https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B07...bluraycom0c-21

Now it makes me wonder if I should hold out on the off chance the "burned on demand" versions will drop in price to something reasonable. And also if I should cancel my order for this version. Ugh.

I have done more reading and everyone is stating stay away from the Mill Creek release. Most say it is worse than the DVD transfers as far as picture quality goes.

I think I am just going to pick up the 4K version of the original and then pick up a cheap copy of the one dex posted above to get 2 & 3. I was wanting to have a marathon and rewatch the first season of Cobra Kai with some friends before we delve into the second season.

I never was a fan of "The Next Karate Kid" so I don't really give a shit about it. I know everyone shits on Part III but it is so fantastically cheesy that I can't help but love it.

I read that a better way to watch the series is to watch the first on and the prelude on the second one. Then watch the third one and then the rest of the second one. You get the bully factor and then the fight to the death at the end if you do it that way.

Canceled my Amazon order for the Mill Creek version. If only the Sony Individual releases weren't burned copies in their Choice Collection line and so expensive each. That $23 price each and being burned copies don't seem worth it. Sad the Mill Creek weren't going to be the same transfers.

There is no difference in MOD and pressed in terms of quality and reliability. Please put that thought out of your head.

The Region Free collection I posted earlier is good. All four movies for the price of one of those MOD. Same transfer as the MOD... but you get a pressed disc and Italian artwork.

Re: The Karate Kid -- 35th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 4/16/19

So my 4K set came in today.

I haven't had the chance to watch the new 4K disc yet. But, I did redeem the digital code. It redeems in 4K. The digital extras appear to be only watchable on Movies Anywhere and Apple TV. Apple TV has the new 2019 Remembering the Karate Kid documentary that's on the 4K disc. MA does not. The rest is the old 2005 DVD extras.

I'll probably try to watch a little of it tonight before bed.

Edit: I did watch the new documentary and about 30 minutes of the disc. The documentary is okay, but really short at 10 minutes. I need to compare the new transfer with the BD. To me it still looks like something that was shot 35 years ago.

I agree there is no degradation in quality of presentation. My concern is quality of BD-R and potential lifespan issues of burned media. And the concept of paying $23 each.

I have a copy of the original script and that is the way it was written. The prelude is the actual ending.

That doesn't bother me. I don't mind that it looks like a product of it's time, which it should be.

Also, as I watched some of it last night, I forgot that they played "Cruel Summer" in the movie. I didn't see the connection when they used the cover in the new Cobra Kai trailer.
