Karate Kid is literally the first thing that pops into my head when I hear that song.

I'm with Obi-Wan on that one. Karate Kid is the first thing that comes to mind with Cruel Summer. It was playing in a store the other day and I asked my daughter what movie it was from. She didn't get it right, but we'll get there.

But if you were cool, you already knew that song long before the movie came out.

Re: The Karate Kid -- 35th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 4/16/19

I just finished watching the 4K disc. Now that I had time to sit through the entire movie, I was pleased with the 4K master. It's miles better than the BD or the old DVD from 2005.

Anyways, great re-watching this again. Such a timeless classic. Looking forward to Cobra Kai season 2 next week.

And gosh, Elisabeth Shue was so adorable back in 1983 (age 20) when this was filmed. Just a gorgeous, girl next door.

If they ever decided to upgrade Karate Kid Part II to 4K, they would have to shoot new extras. I looked back at my old 2005 DVD box set and the only extra on II was an old SD EPK from 1986 that's worthless. Morita died shortly after the old 2005 extras were filmed.

Re: The Karate Kid -- 35th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 4/16/19

I THINK this was the first VHS movie we rented that was actually in stereo, after having the stereo TV and VCR about a week- not having many great theaters around it certainly showed me what sound could do for a movie that wasn't a musical or special-effects extravaganza, my dad was impressed also. I've rarely watched any movies without stereo since then, and upgrading to surround in 1989.

Would be sorta fun to seamlessly cut parts 1 and 2 together, since the 2nd one picks up right at the end.

Re: The Karate Kid -- 35th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 4/16/19

I watched this for the first time with my girls a couple months ago. What never struck me as a kid, for a movie called the Karate Kid... there's a surprising lack of karate in the film. There's Daniel getting his ass kicked in the first act and Ninja Miyagi saving the day. Then the brief scene at Cobra Kai Dojo, and then the final 10 minutes of the film.

It's a classic but I think if it came out today it'd be raked over the coals by everyone's twitter hot take on the lack of action.

This was made back in the era when the big studios could make a good character-driven story aimed at a youth audience. They could have substituted karate for ping-pong and still had a good movie!

Think about it. Rocky was a fight film with very little fighting. KK follows that same path and both are fantastic.

I certainly wouldn't classify Karate Kid as primarily an "action" movie.

I grew up with Karate Kid 1 and 2 when they would be on HBO all the time during the 1980s. I still get a chuckle out of Super Myagi an old man who somehow beats up younger folk such as Danny and his boys and Chozen. Young and faster guys who somehow still get beat up by an old war vet

On the other hand, I ordered "Alien 4K" with slow shipping (to get the digital credit) and while I got a May 1st projected arrival, it was delivered on release day.

I don't know if you're aware, but I believe the BD that comes in this release is the old 2010 disc. It's not a new transfer. The new transfer is the 4K disc.

If you've never owned the Karate Kid on BD before then great, but if you do and don't have 4K yet, it kind of defeats the purpose of this release.

Yeah, I know. I've never owned the film before and just figured I'd get the 4K since it includes the Blu-ray. I probably will upgrade to 4K at some point.

Edit: UPS wound up delivering my copy this afternoon. One bummer on mine is the plastic that holds the artwork in place is loose on the top backside of the case.

I’ll pick up Part II in UHD digital to go with the first I already have, but that’s about it for me. Didn’t care for Part III.

Hopefully they'll sell individually down the road. Would love to pick up Part 2.

Re: The Karate Kid -- 35th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 4/16/19

That’s funny, no extras for part 3. The bastard child. I don’t even count Next KK.

Too bad those reflective pieces are not on Blu. Probably very recent considering rise of Cobra Kai.

Is that 1st 4K exclusive extra? bc I don’t see many extras if at all on 4K discs, usually just on included Blu and usually if 4K has something always included on blu…

I think there’s a typo on that release. The bonus material for Karate Kid 2 is the same as 1.

That commentary will probably be on the iTunes one.

And for crying out loud, where the hell is the music video for Peter Cetera’s Glory of Love??

Re: The Karate Kid -- 35th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 4/16/19

My Karate Kid box set came in today.

So here's some quick observations. The packaging and artwork is pretty nice.

The Karate Kid is the exact same 4K disc from 2 years ago and it comes with the old special edition BD as well

The Karate Kid Part II is a new 4K disc with the Macchio/Tomita commentary track, a deleted scene and trailer. The BD that comes with it is the old KK2 BD from years go.

The Karate Kid Part III is also a new 4K disc. It's barebones and the BD that comes with it is also barebones.

In case you're curious about the digital copy, The Karate Kid I did not redeem as I already have the previous 4K UHD digital copy from the previous set. That digital copy has the extras from the 4K disc.

I did redeem Parts 2 and 3., Both are barebones. So No, you will not get the new commentary track on the digital copy. You will have to purchase the disc.

It's not the exact same disc. This new one has Dolby Vision where the original UHD had HDR only. There are also additional deleted scenes.

FWIW, listening to the movie on Apple TV with AirPods Pro Max is pretty damn impressive. I’ve never heard sound immersion like that before on headphones. Time to throw on some Marvel movies.

Thanks for correcting me. I just casually glanced over the extras the didn't realize they made some upgrades.

I've watched about 30 minutes of the commentary track with Macchio and Tomita and it's actually decent. He's really good at carrying the conversation and he does make some references to Cobra Kai. I believe the track was recorded after season 3 wrapped.
