Stanley Kubrick's dazzling, Academy Award-winning achievement is a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion. Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur C. Clarke) first visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever) into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted space, perhaps even into immortality. "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." Let an awesome journey unlike any other begin.

Special Features:
- Commentary by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood
- Channel Four Documentary 2001: The Making of a Myth

4 Insightful Featurettes:
- Standing on the Shoulders of Kubrick: The Legacy of 2001
- Vision of a Future Passed: The Prophecy of 2001
- 2001: A Space Odyssey - A Look Behind the Future
- What Is Out There?2001: FX and Early Conceptual ArtworkLook: Stanley Kubrick!

According to Robert Harris from hometheaterforum.com he said today there are red flags on this release and to wait for reviews.

Which probably means or I'm assuming this version has been Nolan shitted on with teal or something else.

Ugh, yeah, love Nolan but I don't trust Nolan. Revisionsism is not a good thing when it comes to classic cinema. Hope it's not too bad.

Sounds like Harris was already shitting on the project before he had even seen it though:

March 2018 - Not So Fast On That 70mm “2001” Mastering

The price does keep dropping on amazon. It's down to $22.94 now and there is a pre-order price guaranty.

Considering Harris praised that atrocious first Bram Stoker's Dracula blu-ray, I don't know what to make of this...

Re: 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD - 10/30/18

That was his style in the early days of HD DVD/Bd too.

He praised a whole mess of stuff that later was supplanted by radically different (and more appropriate) looking transfers/encode and then suddenly these new ones are now "reference quality" when previously the old ones had been.

I remember about ten years back in a discussion of The Untouchables, it had to be pointed out to him that something was off about the look of the film after a page and a half of nothing but praise from him and other posters. He finally copped to it having a look slightly akin to "freshly waxed linoleum" and hence the waxy/DNR criticism entered the lexicon.

I believe, based on recent comments (and a change of heart) that the prominent presence of "HDR" on the jacket is cause for concern that the films look may have been violently jacked around ala Close Encounters.
Just like his earlier overlooking of DNR issues on the new format, he was willing to cut a bunch of 4K discs of classic films some slack with their use of HDR, when it had no business being used on them or has been implemented too aggressively.

I don't think that's the case any longer.

Just thinking out loud... and I'll probably get crucified for saying this... but I think 2001 in 3D would be off the hook.

The space ships, the docking sequence, the floating pen, the monoliths, the "trip" at end... it could be completely insane.

If this drops to $19.99, I might pull the trigger.

And going through my collection the other night, it turns out I actually do own 2001 on DVD. I bought the Stanley Kubrick DVD SE box set years ago and had it in the closet and forgot about it. This is part of that set and does have a decent amount of extras.

I could care less about Harris' thoughts, first time in 4K, I want to have it no matter what.

Josh....come over here to my corner and let's talk about this 3D nonsense...

As much as I love 2001 (one of my all-time favorites), all the Warner Kubrick films on DVD and BD have eventually dropped to bargain bin prices. I can wait until this one is under $10.

I forgot they released a trailer for the anniversary, and that it did show a pronounced teal push.

Harris' problems seem to be more with the 5.1 audio tracks, and absence of the original mix rather than the visuals.

I just watched it recently, hoping to get it out of my system so I wouldn't be seduced by the hype for this 4K release.

According to his latest post he has not seen or heard the 4K disc yet. Seems what has occurred happens to be on a rumor of a friend or an inside source.

Dropped to $21.60. Went ahead and pulled the trigger on the pre-order.

Even if it drops again, I'll get the lowest price.

Highly doubt this will be a Black Friday deal. It's a 50 year old catalog title. Only hot new and fairly recent releases seem to be put on sale during the Holiday time.

Re: 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD - 10/30/18

Ouch.

The scary news is a report from correspondent Simon Wells, about the much- touted Christopher Nolan restoration of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I’d like to know if other readers have seen the show, and if their prints were different, or better. Here’s Simon’s note — actually, two notes I’ve shuffled together:

“Hi Glenn, Just wondering if you happened to see the recent Nolan de-restoration of 2001 in 70mm in recent months?

I did and was utterly horrified by the general murkiness, blown out white and general sludginess. The colour grade was horrible, the detail pitiful. The scenes inside the space wheel where Floyd talks to Rossiter and the Russians were blown out and looked abysmal. Worse still was the new teal and amber color grade which I am assuming is how the upcoming 4k release will be presented. I dont think I have ever seen it look so bad.

Getting films you never thought you’d see on Blu-ray is great but this kind of vandalism just depresses me no end. I’d be very curious to hear your thoughts. — Simon Wells”

Am I stirring up a non-issue, taking a reader’s evaluation on something I haven’t seen myself? The last time I saw 2001 on a big screen was at the 2012 TCMfest, and the 70mm print looked just fine to me; I’ve never seen a bad print, even in 35mm. I can say that the WB film management and restoration experts are some of the finest in the world, and that their 2003 remastering of Ryan’s Daughter was the most perfect film presentation I’ve ever seen. I’m all for celebrity filmmakers helping promote film restoration, but I’d hardly think that 2001 was being neglected.
Was on the fence about this one anyway, but I'm planning to cancel my pre-order. Even if the Bd hasn't been nolan-ized, I'll just wait for the price drops in a year. After a viewing a couple months back I won't be ready to screen it again for a while anyway.

Christopher Nolan is color blind so it all makes sense. :p

I don't think the IMAX will differ from the 4K right?

I'm taking my daughter to the local IMAX the week before she turns 7 for her birthday and she's thrilled. She absolutely loves this movie, can't wait!

One of the few movies I truly consider a work of art. I really hope in come near me for IMAX.

That is one pretty steelbook. I'm not much of a steelbook lover but that is probably the nicest looking steelbook yet.

I haven't seen 2001 in years, I don't remember it that much either. I have 2010 on blu-ray which I picked up for $5 and I really like the movie and got me pretty hyped to see the original.

I've seen both the 70MM Unrestored print and the 4K IMAX DCP, and the color was the same, so no worries about revisionism. The UHD disc should be good.
