Supergirl (1984) -- 7/24/18

Supergirl (1984) is coming to Blu-ray on July 24 from Warner Archive!

Producers Ilya and Alexander Salkind continue to bring the lore and legend behind the World’s Greatest Superheroes to the big screen in this follow-up to the beloved Superman films starring Christopher Reeve. Helen Slater, in her movie debut, stars as the sensational Supergirl, alongside Faye Dunaway and Peter O’Toole.

This special edition presents the film’s International Cut, remastered in High Definition for Blu-ray, along with the rare Director’s Cut on a bonus DVD.

Stuckmann absolutely hates this movie. He posted a pretty funny review about it 2 years ago and trashes it.

It's worth a watch to see his thoughts and hear how truly awful this movie is. He does use clips to point out how bad it is.

I have the barebones WB DVD and yikes I don't think I can stomach watching this again even on BD.

Re: Supergirl (1984) -- 7/24/18

Can someone explain to me who that guy is everyone keeps posting videos of?

Either way, I wouldn't sink money into Supergirl.

And what the hell happened to Helen Slater?

YouTuber. Movie reviewer from Ohio. He has 1.3M subscribers, so he has a considerable fan base.

Helen Slater has appeared occasionally on The CW version of Supergirl.

Since I have the other Superman movies on Blu-ray, I'll add this one to my collection... and I'll still keep my Anchor Bay DVD.

I might actually get this. It’s bad but kind of so bad that it’s good.

My favorite scene is the one she flies around in the Forest yelling "weeee". Cute scene.

But not enough for me to justify a double dip unless it's $10.

It's cannon with the Superman universe because Mark McClure appears in it as Jimmy Olsen. But, it's fucking terrible.

The old Anchor Bay DVD, which is long out of print, has a 1 hour making of documentary from 1984 that's hosted by Faye Dunaway. I wonder if that will be on here or if they don't have the rights to it.

It really is terrible. It is past the point of so bad it's good. It's just bad and definitely in a train wreck kinda way...if the train wreck includes 300 deaths.

I dunno. I find it campy and fun. Yes, it’s terrible in every way imaginable. But, Slater is nice to look at and Faye Dunaway, while terrible, is still fun to watch...

Anyone see either of these cuts? Any improvements whatsoever?

I have the DVD with the international cut. It had a small scratch that was nonetheless effecting playback about halfway through. I never bothered cleaning it up so that I could finish it, if that tells you anything.

Like anything, it depends who you ask. I watched one of the longer cuts when I got the original DVD and I recall enjoying more than the Theatrical, -it seemed more like a finished film. I have not watched it since that time, which was a while ago. Frankly, while it is dopey, it certainly reflects the "Supergirl" comics that led up to it, which were sort of dopey themselves. Mind you, up to that point, the "Supergirl" comics were mostly intended for young girls of a more innocent time

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to buy this as I want to encourage them to release the TV version of the rest of Superman II...

Yes, she plays Supergirl's Earth mom in the TV show, and Dean Cain is the father.

Ha! Nice way to pay homage to the previous shows. I’ve been meaning to watch the TV show, just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I have the Anchor Bay 2 disc set but I’ll be upgrading for this. I know it’s not high art, but it’s part of something bigger than itself.

Re: Supergirl (1984) -- 7/24/18

This film almost works if you imagine that it's the fever dream of a young adolescent Kara, safely tucked away on Argo but imagining being a world saving hero like her cousin, and what it might be like to visit earth.
The story makes no sense as linear narrative but sort of makes sense if you approach it as "dream logic".

Unfortunately isn't thoughtful enough to supply any context like that to allow that interpretation and the result is just a terrible, insulting movie.

I grew up being a big fan of this character from the time I was in pre-school. She had just gotten her first solo comic book series and those where the first tiles I went for in the rack after the Batman ones.

I remember reading the blurb in Starlog that David O'Dell had been tapped to write the script. I never saw Dark Crystal (still haven't), but I was under the impression that it was a classy piece of fantasy that was aiming a little higher than most of it's ilk.
That had me looking forward to a live action Supergirl.

Not too long after that I remember when Slater was first cast, and our city newspaper ran her picture along with the PR announcing production of the film. Last time I saw a newspaper run a photo of a movie commencing production it was the shot of Luke on the Taun-taun announcing principle photography had begun on the SW sequel. For Supergirl to be accorded the same kind of pre publicity, I thought, it must be a serious, high quality attempt at the character ala the first Superman.

Flash forward to the next year and they had bumped it from it's original summer release date. It finally ended up opening around Thanksgiving. Opening weekend I was one of half a dozen people in one of the town's largest theaters. Walked out of it depressed as all hell. The comic adaptation had been released months earlier, so I knew the general mess of a story going in. I was hoping that the delay in release meant some recutting and reshaping had gone on to make it better, but it wasn't the case.

This movie is another example of why I've never dug the 80's. The decade was full of shit like this.

I will probably buy this.
Wish the Warner Archive would also release the uncut SWAMP THING version.
