I came to the same conclusion when I read about the latest round of changes. Thus far, I have only purchased the Blu-rays for the newest films.

And this point bears repeating here- what if the only way to get movies was via digital, and every once in a while George Lucas kept making changes to his movies and those would be the only versions you could see?

Don't know what you're talking about. I consider myself a true SW fan and I own the OT on blu-ray...

That’s a lot of what if’s and you didn’t even factor in “what if George Lucas still had any control over the films?”

You are able to download digital movies.

Are you still trying to attack Digital? We get it. You like physical.

Alan has a point, though.

With digital, a film or tv show can be edited or even thrown down the memory hole and there's little that can be done about it. It's not a huge issue now, but what if, say, Universal decides that parts of Animal House are racist and offensive and decide to remove them from the film. If you have it on DVD or blu-ray, you own the original. If you're streaming, you're SOL.

Yeah, even the cover art constantly changing in my Vudu library is annoying, I can't imagine if they ever replaced theatrical cuts with director's cuts or edited cuts or vice-versa without me noticing.

I only own TFA and soon to be TLJ on disc. I have fan recreations of the OT and don’t have the PT at all.

I know there are sellers out there for the Despecialized editions, and they say they just charge for the materials to make the set, and I have owned pretty much every dvd set of the original trilogy. I am scared I could get in trouble if I tried to acquire them.

If anyone ever comes after people for Star Wars fan edits (and so far they don't seem inclined to), they will come after the people who make/distribute/host them. They're not coming after people who buy or download them.

The reason I don’t buy one of those sets is because they keep tweaking and upgrading the fan edits. It’s much easier to replace a download than it is to repurchase the set.

I thought those fan edits were basically done except for some work on Return of the Jedi being done (last I checked at least). I suppose they might tweak things to look or sound better though.

Re: STAR WARS (THE LAST JEDI): 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray ~ March 27

Harmy has been working on Despecialized v3.0 for the first time in a couple of years and they're being completely redone from scratch in 1080p. They've only been 720p up to this point. I watched all three current versions recently and while they are FAR superior to the official BDs, there are lots of little things that can still be fixed. Better quality sources for the SE bits and further refined color correction being two of the more notable upgrades. There are also other ongoing projects out there as well, mostly involving scans of film prints, whereas Harmy's is blu-ray based.

While Harmy's 3.0 will remain Blu-ray-based, in the main, he has indicated that he'll be using scanned film print elements to replace some of the lower-quality sources.

Right, which is what I was referring to when I mentioned better quality sources for the SE replacements.

Sure, but can you point to me to where that's happened before? And multiple times? It's just Alan's way of saying "don't buy digital! Here's another reason why".

And really, if that happens, I'm sure I can just find the disc used for $5 and be whole again. Its not the end of the world (and not like Lucus owns them anymore).

Digital sky is always falling.

Cover art changes because a new disc release comes out, the movie changes studio hands etc. Sometimes it works out in digital favor because you might get additional extras or a better quality of the film. Its mainly Disney this happens to. All kid movies have gone to the GIANT FACE OF CHARACTER on cover approach.

The industry calls that "Bigface". And I prefer to keep whatever covers my movies originally come with (I've even bought some when I saw they'd be changing), but others might like the updates. Same may apply to updates of content as well.

Imagining Darth Vader on a bigface-style cover...

That was also the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Jedi Rocks I can fast forward, but George inserting that "NOOOO!" there as a fuck you to the fans that hated that scene in Sith was just petty.

I'm gonna revisit this one again this weekend. prior to getting the 3D. i liked it, but don't remember much except the whole stupid trivial Poe and Finn story which was completely pointless, which also says something...

Glad I'm not the only one that thought their arcs were useless.

I have a feeling we will be seeing this all over with a discount before too long. Local BB nearing 5PM and it looks like they barely sold any. They had around 40-50 4K Steelbooks left.
