What should I watch (probably Bluray) with laid up mom?
so, i'm in a quandry. my mom just got out of hospital (broke her pelvis, whole big thing). i'm going to her house to watch a movie (probably bluray), comfort her, take mind off pain, etc... , but can't decide what to watch.
1. The Accidental Tourist...we both haven't seen. I guess it is a light romantic comedy with some drama. Not sure. Like William Hurt, i know Davis won the Oscar (she likes all in it), but the material? eh. but i thought it was interesting enough to blind buy.
2. Midnight Run...i of course have seen it many times. she loves De Niro older stuff (some comedy) and liked Meet the Parents, Analyze This, i think thought The Intern was ok. Loved The Score and recently viewed Running Scared with Crystal and Hines, which MR is in similar vein, and liked quite a bit.
3. Ghost World...now i really want to see this again. i told her about it, teenage coming of age dramedy with Buscemi, Birch, and Johansson, little quirky from director of nothing she really knows (and if i told her Bad Santa she would definitely nix it), but she seemed a little interested.
there are others on a little list of ours (when we watch once in awhile): Edge of Seventeen, Cinema Paradiso, Rumble Fish, Red Turtle...
Help me decide, please...

How old is your mom? What does she usually gravitate to?
Accidental Tourist actually gets pretty heavy- but it makes the eventual up turn all that more affecting. I don't know that I would classify it as a romantic comedy, although it does have some pretty funny, character based humor. It's definitely more of a drama with a liberal sprinkling of humor. For me, it's one of the absolute best movies of the '80's. Maybe my second favorite. I would just be afraid of setting up expectations like it was You Got Mail or something like that.
How about something like Working Girl? or Peggy Sue Got Married? Amelie (will she read subtitles?), Demme's Something Wild or Married To The Mob.
Otherwise anything on the list would work. They're all good movies.

Hmmm...My Mom is 80 and she surprisingly loved both "Big Eyes" and "Big Fish." She and my stepfather access VUDU and they both enjoyed those Tim Burton Films.

The Accidental Tourist...very well done and better than I expected. Didn't know much about story, but very Kasdan. Very stilted, uncomfortable dialogue. Really enjoyed. Not sure Davis was Oscar worthy performance, but she was very good. Quirky a bit by solid script and nice story.

There is no more appropriate movie for you and your mom to watch in this situation than David O. Russell's debut feature, Spanking the Monkey.
You'll have some very interesting conversations after that, I guarantee it.

yeah, probably a bad idea. though she knows Peckinpah and loves Hoffman, i don't think she would take well to the violence and rape...
