Re: UHD release announcements

Man, I haven't seen Run, Lola Run since the DVD days. That'd be a cool one to revisit. It's a shame it's limited to that box set.

Also, I haven't watched Wall-e in years and have no affinity for the Criterion collection like others but I think the lack of 4k Disney/Pixar output is making me want it more than I really do.

Hasn't almost every Pixar movie already been released in 4k by Disney themselves? I have all of the Toy Story films, both Monster Inc. films, both Finding Nemo movies, Cars 1 and 2, and even Wall-E already in 4k, among others. I'm a bit befuddled by the excitement about this one unless their 4k release will be miles above what has already been released.

I think part of the excitement is that it opens up a lot of possibilities for the future.

Re: UHD release announcements

I get that but damn it is double dipping in the same format in a very short window due to it being Criterion. And I'm a big Criterion fan with well over 300 bds and 4k releases in my library.

Re: UHD release announcements

Every Pixar movie has been released on UHD by Disney. I agree it would be more exciting if Wall-E wasn't already on UHD.

Here's the contents per Criterion

DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • 4K digital master, approved by director Andrew Stanton, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack
  • One 4K UHD disc of the film, presented in both Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10+, and two Blu-rays with the film and special features
  • Alternate 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio and stereo soundtracks
  • Two audio commentaries: one featuring Stanton and the other, character supervisor Bill Wise, coproducer Lindsey Collins, story artist Derek Thompson, and lead animator Angus MacLane
  • New programs on Stantonís cinematic influences and production designer Ralph Egglestonís color scripts
  • Tour of the Pixar Living Archive with Stanton
  • Behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, including segments from early animation reels
  • The Pixar Story (2007), a documentary by Leslie Iwerks
  • More than a dozen documentaries exploring the filmís production and robots
  • Anatomy of a Scene: The Plant, a masterclass with Stanton
  • ďWALLēEĒ: A to Z, a new program featuring Stanton and coscreenwriter Jim Reardon
  • Deleted scenes featuring commentary by Stanton
  • A Story (1987), a student film by Stanton
  • BURNēE (2008), a short film by MacLane
  • Trailers
  • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • English descriptive audio
  • PLUS: An essay by author Sam Wasson; selections from Stantonís sketchbooks, script notes, and drawings; and artwork from the WALLēE team
So it looks like a mix of new and old features, although I'd be surprised if it included everything from the Disney release. Most notably, the specs don't include Presto, the short that aired with Wall-E

Re: UHD release announcements

Wall-E is my favorite Pixar film so Iíll will likely get the Criterion for that reason and to show support for Disney/Criterion releases.

Re. Wall-E - Does this mean a new 4K render is being used a the source? or is it a recompression of the same upscale that is used for the existing Disney release?

Thanks. Here's hoping it includes both cuts of Rocky IV.

Highly unlikely the animation would be re-rendered for this release, or that the transfer will be any different at all from the existing Disney UHD.

I heard that his Director's Cut was quite rushed. Hopefully they fixed some of the rough edges (sloppy edits and music cues, etc) resulting from that.

I'd love a hybrid version of theatrical and director's cuts, but I don't see that happening.

As it rightly should. It's awful. Beyond amateur hour.

Re: UHD release announcements

It’s horrible, but at least it’s clever. There’s been a ton of horrible cover art recently. Poltergeist I’m looking at you.

Re: UHD release announcements

Don't know if this has been floated yet, but I believe the shitty Poltergeist art is a blunt attempt to drive traffic to the steelbook, with better but still meh artwork. I've been A/B comparing and conclude I would pay more for better art, but not at $60 versus $25. (I'm not a steelbook collector ...)

Re: UHD release announcements

Ten years ago I would have snagged the steelbook. These days, I’m just glad to have it in physical form at all.

All of the recent WB catalog slate looks terrible. Poltergeist, Lost Boys, etc.

Re: UHD release announcements

Concept is top notch, execution notsomuch.

This idea would work better as a minimalistic 2-3 color design instead of the 1995 Toy Story era CG looking head.
