Woody Allen BD collections
 

I've enjoyed Woody Allen's filmmaking for years but don't own many of his films in any form. It doesn't help that he has an utterly huge body of work. Might anybody have tips on the most economical way to acquire his films on BD? While Amazon wasn't of much help, I'm thinking there could be budget priced BD sets from Europe, Australia, etc. Has anybody already tried this?

This is a good way to start: Annie Hall, Sleeper, Manhattan, Hannah and her Sisters for just $9 a movie via Amazon. Here's the link: Woody Allen 4-Pack $36.04

Blue Jasmine, Midnight in Paris and others are also available via various distributors at decent prices. But unfortunately, Twilight Time distributes some of his best works including my personal favorite, "Broadway Danny Rose." Their prices are outrageous unless you can catch a sale at either their own website or Screen Archives Entertainment. Even then, you are looking at forking out $20 a title.

That is a good starter bundle, and probably more Woody-accessible. Yeah, that sounds weird. But in any case, the single titles of that bundle also seem to sell for about the same price of $9, but when looking at the bundle price vs. single title prices, they tend to go up and down in unison. Right now, that is a good deal for the bundle, and if you have Prime, some good prices for them individually.

I'm familiar with that BD set, but was actually hoping for international suggestions. Skimming Amazon UK, I noticed some potentially interesting BD sets...but they all appear out of print. For the time being, I bought an SD set of 20 films for £13.99

While I have both the DVD Box Sets (1 & 2 from the early 2000's), I have been able to pick up some of the more recent Woody Allen films on Blu-ray (like Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine) for about $4.00 from the clearance racks at Target. It seems a lot of people do not want to pay retail for some of these films, and sometimes Target seems to slash the price.

That's because Blue Jasmine and Midnight in Paris are both Sony titles. Sony usually marks theirs down cheap. Fox and TT aren't as nice.

Wait until Fox Connect has a sale and buy all the the ones they offer for 50% off. $5-$6.50 a piece.

I'm really shocked Fox hasn't put together a small box set like what was done on DVD, or at least a few double features.

Those are good ideas. I've participated in Fox Connect sales before, but typically steered towards boxed set and catalog titles. And I don't shop at the local Target regularly, as they're on the other side of town, but am traveling tomorrow and can likely visit that one.

Still open to any "magic bullet" boxed set ideas, but this will keep me busy for now. Thanks.

TT is a specialty company and has license to print x amount of a title. It's not like they are just some company out there trying to stick it to consumers.

Well my opinion of them differs from yours. I cringe when I hear they have the rights to a movie I want to own. I would rather see Olive Films or Kino Lorber obtain distribution if the studios won't release it themselves. At least those distributors produce enough units to satisfy demand and do not create scarcity to justify their outrageous pricing structure. There are thousands of people who would like to buy "Fright Night" on Blu-ray at a decent price. I just hope Sony will re-release it like they did Christine. I own Twilight Time releases that I bought during "sales" but the only time I paid full price was for the Thunderbirds double feature. The fact it was two films allowed me to justify the purchase. It wasn't anywhere near a priority except that I was afraid it would soon go OOP.

The "scarcity" argument with regards to TT is so tired. The discs aren't scarce. They're expensive, and the production run is limited, but they're not scarce. All of this bitching and moaning is over 3 or 4 out of hundreds of titles. None of the Woody Allen titles are oop. And for what it's worth, TT puts out a much higher quality product, technically speaking, than either Kino or Olive.

The definition of scarce is "insufficient for demand." I believe that pretty much sums it up for many of their titles. Most people can't fork out that kind of money on short notice. And whether you find it tired or not is of no consequence. I would prefer a company like Olive Films or Kino Lorber simply because they would produce sufficient supply to satisfy demand over an extended period of time. If you don't think those, a-hem, "limited runs" are a pricing strategy, then you are simply naive. Scarcity supports higher pricing. Its economics 101 my friend. So lets just stop the nonsense on that issue. And there are far more than 3 or 4 titles that disappeared almost overnight. There's plenty on that list that I would like to own but Twilight Time has pretty much killed the opportunity for many people to obtain them any time soon on Blu-ray disc. I hope they have a tougher time gaining access to quality titles in the future. Frankly, I'm tired of their apologists.

I'm not a Twilight Time apologist. There are plenty of reasons to dislike them, including their "limited edition" model, which does create false demand. I just don't like the misinformation. Barely any of the oop titles you listed were gone "overnight." That list is pretty much limited to Fright Night, Christine, Body Double and the Blob. Everything else took months, if not years to sell out. In some cases, they've even had multiple print runs. The overwhelming majority of their catalog will never come close to selling out, including the Woody Allen titles in question. I also have much more confidence in Twilight Time putting out a quality product than I do Kino or Olive.
