How do you rent your movies?

Most of you obviously can't afford to purchase every single Blu-Ray that you're interested in seeing.

So how do you guys rent the movies you want to see when you miss seeing it in theaters?

This question obviously doesn't apply to those who don't rent.

Are there still video stores where you live? Or do you rent digitally? or does your local library actually provide movies for you to rent?

Mods: Please close the other thread. I added Red Box to the poll otherwise it would be incomplete.

Does using a subscription-streaming service really count as "renting"?

Wasn't sure, but I threw it in there anyways. You could technically say that a subscription-streaming service like that is Unlimited rentals. Because you don't the material.

I have a local Mom and Pop store, one of the very few left in my area, that rents out BD's for $2 and DVDs for $1.50. I've been going there for 25+ years and somehow they are still in business. That's my preferred rental spot.

I'll go to Red Box only if I get texted a coupon or get one via e-mail.

Dropped Netflix disc rentals a few years ago after all the studio restrictions started taking place with 30+ day delays on new releases. I still have them for their streaming.

Should have made only purchase an option (especially for this forum).

Red Box, but only if there is a free code

I haven't rented many movies ever since DVDs became affordable (at the time I was working at a theater and already saw most movies for free anyways, then bought the ones I liked or found some way to see the few my theaters didn't get.) I've never rented a DVD from a regular video store, I think the last laserdisc I rented was "Before Sunrise". Don't even remember the last VHS movie I rented. When Redbox had their free codes ever week I would use the heck out of those, renting one for each credit card I had, but I think I've only paid for one rental from them if even that many. When Vudu had their daily 99 cent rentals I used that a lot too, but can't bring myself to pay $6 for a rental from them now. Our library has DVDs but no Blu-Rays, I get a few hard-to-find titles from them but usually don't bother with anything that's available on Blu-Ray.

Netflix.

New releases on disc, older or less popular films through their streaming service.

I have free Amazon Prime so I've got their streaming service as well but I rarely use it.

I can honestly say that I've never used Redbox. I'm not really sure why.

Netflix, Amazon, or occasionally buying the digital code from here. If I'm really interested and fairly certain I'll want to get it on blu, 99% of the time that movie will be in the $10 range or less within a few months. So I can wait. I usually have stuff in a pile I have ready to see.

The Imitation Game is a good example for me. I missed it in theaters, and by the time it hit blu it was about 3 months before I was able to get it at Target for $10. That was about 3 months ago, and I finally saw it last night. Really great movie btw. IMO, it should have won the Oscar for best picture.

EDIT: and after my long winded response, I realized this was about renting - which I never really do due to the reasons listed above. I'd rather buy because after 2 viewings or so on average, it justifies the purchase. And I'd rather have the movie permanently.

I rarely rent. Mostly because digital rentals are so expensive. Almost all new releases cost $5+ to rent. And I figure at that price, I might as well buy it.

But lately I've been thinking about how many movies I only watch once, or never get around to watching at all. I might try switching to rentals for a couple months and see how it works out.

Hulu and Netflix streaming and disc subscriptions.

I also use Vudu sometimes but rarely. I mostly purchase TV series from there that are only on DVD.

Netflix and Hulu for streaming subscriptions.
Vudu and Xbox for digital single title rentals.
Library for Blu-ray discs. Used to use Redbox too, but they ditched Canada in February.

That's about it.

For the convenience factor, I would rent more digitally if it was priced around the $2.99 range. I rent a few every now and then, but $5.99 or more is kind of expensive for a 1 time only watch.

For that reason I still rent DVDs/BDs from my local video store. I also want to help keep the owner in business. But, he did admit to me recently that he's not sure how much longer he can stay in business. Aside from weekends, it's slow. He says piracy, Netflix and digital rentals have hurt his business.

Netflix streaming is great to binge watch TV and their new original shows, but they still aren't really competitive with new release movies. Newer movies usually won't appear on their streaming platform until months or even a year after they initially come out.

This is the sole reason why I would still be renting, if the 2 stores I used to rent from were still in business. I have such great memories of taking the Friday trips to the rental store to get my 2-3 rentals for the weekend. Sadly, it's an experience my kids will never know.

Going forward I plan to make more use of my Library when there is a new film that I'm curious to see.

But I still have over 400 bds alone in my unwatched pile so I don't really need to be renting much of anything out- even when it's free.

Either Netflix or through Amazon

My library carries a lot of new titles, including most of the Criterions. But they're a little slow in catching up with Blu rays. A new title might have 20 DVD copies across the entire county's 20 libraries, but only 1-2 Blu ray copies.

Digitally. Probably split between Amazon, MGo, Vudu - depends on where I have a code.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

I used to rent from a local mom & pop business but once they closed shop I either rent from Redbox or wait for a "free" stream on Netflix (I hate that they randomly crop some scope movies to 1.78:1) or Amazon Prime.

Redbox only.

I have Netflix streaming, which even though it's in the poll options, I don't consider that renting at all. I find it more in line with cable television.

I still get discs from Netflix, and I occasionally rent stuff from Redbox.

I rent from Amazon, and also sub to Netflix and Hulu, plus 2 free years of Amazon Prime.

I don't charge anything; friends and family can borrow anything anytime.

I just removed the DVD/Blu-ray option from my Netflix account, so now I just stream via them, Amazon PRIME, rent from Redbox, etc.
