Spartacus (1960) Restored BD Arriving in 2015 [Oct. 6]

Robert Harris has been working with Universal on this project.

"The bottom line is that the new Spartacus is going to be gorgeous,” Harris told me earlier today. “The work has been underway since last July, and it’s been a huge, huge project. I’ve been consulting with them, and Universal is taking this very seriously. They’re doing everything that I asked for, and in 4K. You’re going to see detail and color than you haven’t seen since the restored 70mm version screened 24 years ago."

I'm so glad I held off on the current blu but I was thinking Criterion was going to do the honors for a blu ray edition.

I'm not overly familiar with Spartacus, but everything I've read about this new restoration indicates that this thing is the real deal. In other words, it's not even worth considering the old transfer and that it should in no way influence anyone's perception of what Spartacus should look like.

Including the one previously included on the Criterion DVD?

Yes (although the Criterion dvd is much closer to the new BD in some spots than the previous BD). That transfer is relatively ancient at this point and was sourced from the photochemical restoration done back in the early 90's by Robert Harris. This new restoration (with which Harris was also involved) was an "all hands on deck" type of endeavor that basically started from scratch using all of the advantages that modern technology affords. Every effort was made to make this the absolute best version of Spartacus ever seen. Multiple reference prints were used to do the color timing.

Criterion's DVD was based on the 1991 Robert Harris restoration. The new Blu-ray is based on a brand new restoration also by Robert Harris.

Cool, thanks. I suspect I will be adding it to my Criterion DVD set. Adding rather than replacing since it seems the extras do not overlap.
