Re: DC Animated Universe Films

Here's the deal on Constantine: City of Demons. The people behind it are staffers from the CW's Arrowverse shows. But it was produced in conjunction with the regular animated DC Universe and adapts a DC graphic novel from the 2000s. The story stands by itself, so there are no real connections to the Arrowverse beyond having Matt Ryan voice the character.

The movie was actually written by veteran DC Comics' writer J.M. DeMatteis, who helped launch the Vertigo imprint and knows Constantine as a character.

I've always liked the Constantine character and collected the whole Vertigo run. This is one of the better (if not the best) DC animated movies, pretty much straight out of the comics.

Thanks for these comments on the Constantine movie, I was gonna skip it (I actually watched and enjoyed the Constantine show, but don't watch the Arrowverse stuff) but now it's in my watchlist.

My copy of Constantine: City of Demons arrived yesterday and I immediately popped it in. Definitely one of the better DC Animated movies. They also finally made full use of their R rated freedom.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

I just won a sweepstakes at DC Universe and won a ticket for the Death of Superman and Reign of Superman double feature. I'll be seeing it on Sunday the 13th. Pleasantly surprised. I usually never win any of these that I enter.

I have the BD of Death of Superman, but only watched some of it. I guess I can wait and now see it in completion on the big screen.

^That's cool! I would love to win one of their big prize giveaways but I know that is a longshot and I only register for the stuff I would really want.

They did actually give me a free year's subscription to the DC Universe because I am in "insider" or something like that and give fill out surveys they send me all the time online.

I may have to check this out at the theater. What's the run time for both of these together total? Is this new version of Death Of Superman worth seeing? Everyone bitched about the first one but I really liked it.

According to Atom Tickets, which put out the code for the free ticket, the total running time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

My son and I just watched Batman Ninja on DC Universe.

Umm....what the fuck? He loved it and while I thought the animation was impressive, the story was just way to "out there" for me.

They have most all of the animated stuff to stream but I looked for the recent Suicide Squad animated release and it was one of the few that was missing. I wonder why?

It'll probably rotate onto DC Universe eventually. It probably won't on other streaming platforms because it and Killing Joke are the only R-rated animated flicks I can remember seeing from DC.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

Just watched "Doom" (BluRay) on my new 65 4K HDTV...WOW, it looked amazing!!! Best I have ever seen it.

Then, I watched the 2 episodes of JLU that were included on the Disk...the video was so awesome, it was like seeing the show for the first time. Best JLU has ever look.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

I just got back from the DC Universe double feature The Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen at AMC theatre.

Loved the Death of Superman. Reign was good, not great. Kind of a meh conclusion to the 2 film arc. The final act really saved it. There's a few nice nods to the Superman movies in both films. If you have the DC Universe streaming service, Reign will be available on the 29th on the same day as the DVD release. If you want to add a physical copy of Reign to your collection, I would personally wait until it gets cheaper. I don't think it has much replay value.

Regarding the villains:
Spoiler:
Doomsday in Death was a much more intimidating and interesting villain than Hank Henshaw/Cyborg Superman in Reign. The whole gist of Reign was Henshaw being pissed at Superman for not being around to save him and his wife when they had the space disaster in Death. That plotline carried over from Death to Reign. So he ends up working with Darkseid. It's basically Henshaw having an extended hissy fit.

My biggest complaint is the 2 movies looked like shit on the big screen. Very dark and murky.

My grades:

Death= B+
Reign= B-

The played both movies back to back, but there was a 5 minute intermission between them.

Apparently WB is going to release both movies edited together with new footage as one big extended movie later this year.

I was hoping/assuming they would do that, glad I didn't pick up Death yet.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

Even though everyone assumes it was coming, it is weird to actually announce it before the second movie releases. I'm sure that will cause a lot of people (myself possibly included) to just skip the release of Reign of the Supermen.

Cool. I'm glad I waited. The previous posts speculating this was going to be like the TDKR release were correct.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

I see that Reign of Supermen is being released on Blu-ray this Tuesday. Best Buy has an exclusive bundle with the Death of Superman trade and Target has the steelbook. Any other place has an exclusive? No figure included in this release?

The Target SteelBook sold out online for shipping or pick up. Oh well. I’ll go with $15 on Amazon and wait for this cumulative edition...

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

I never grabbed The Death of Superman so I might as well just wait for it to be combined with Reign of the Supermen. Makes you wonder why WB doesn't just let some of these films exceed their 75 minute runtime. If they can do two parts for some of the films and combine them anyways I don’t see what the difference is. I suppose it’s that they get to milk some fans into double dipping.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

So far there's not going to be a DVD of "Reign", which means sources like Redbox and Netflix and even my county library won't be carrying it. I don't know if Amazon or other sources will make it available for streaming. I'll pick it up with they release the combined version.
