That too. But I don't mind that as much as I do w/ the previews they put in at the beginning. Seriously... do those even matter to most people that have BDs?

I don't mind those as much, they're something to actually watch and can be skipped.

Of course it should. A complex menu has to load more java code, and more graphics.

Yes. This pisses me off immensely.

It's simply retarded as hell that these warnings are cluttering up every commercial disc you buy (except those from Criterion or from other countries), because the people who do make copies ignore them, and those of us who don't simply get irritated by these not very subtle threats and annoying graphics that suck when you have a home theater. Some companies are a bit better about including them, as they keep them separate from the actual movie. Others, however, take audiences right out of the picture by attaching them to the movie. When you hit "play" to see the movie proper, that bullshit appears, and transports us right out of the movie experience and into studio/government bully bullshit. Criterion does it right! Twilight Time's (and, to be fair, Disney's and other studios') FBI message appears as soon as the discs are loaded, and do not come on after you hit "play." Wish other companies would learn from this!

It does suck when these anit-piracy warnings pop up but it's been going on since the days of VHS and for the most part won't be going away.

Not to mention the 10 studio logos before each film...I remember back when there was only one per movie.

Re: Goodfellas 25th Anniversary Edition (05/05/15)

At least with VHS you could fast forward them. They should at least make them skippable.

I mean, if Criterion can get away with having zero pre-movie bullshit, why can't the other?

Re: Goodfellas 25th Anniversary Edition (05/05/15)

To be fair, I've never ran into trailers that are unskippable, but the fact that I have to press a button to keep skipping them is asinine. BTW, I do appreciate how Disney discs give you options to skip everything and just head to the menu or straight to the movie. Though they still have the unskippable FBI warning screens.

Re: Goodfellas 25th Anniversary Edition (05/05/15)

I always find it odd that when you watch an uncut, uninterrupted movie on cable there is no FBI warning at the beginning and yet just about every TV in North America has had either a VCR, a DVD-R deck or a PVR hooked-up to it for the last 30 years.

I remember ads for Super Channel (Pay-TV movie channel in Canada) back in the eighties actually encouraging you to record movies off of their station.

You're encouraged to record a copy-written film from cable and yet you get five years in prison for copying the exact same film from a tape or disc?

Legally-speaking, I've never really understood the difference.

I don't mind static menus at all. I prefer them to the menus that have footage of the film itself that can reveal spoilers. That bugs me more than static menus.

Re: Goodfellas 25th Anniversary Edition (05/05/15)

Static menus are fine - but this is worst than that - they could at least have the font and selectable icons match the movie somehow. It just looks bad. What they did for an anniversary release is just utterly lazy.

If it looks bad, at least it matches the lousy cover art. Well, in its lookingbadness...

Some studios allow you to quickly skip the trailers by chapter forwarding 6 or 7 times.

But others, (I think Sony), put some sort of title break in between each trailer, so you need to chapter skip, then hesitate a second, then a new trailer loads, then you have to skip again, and repeat this sequence a half dozen times.

I feel worse about my mom who isn't as savvy with the remote and the various permutations to skip trailers, that she ends up watching 3 or 4 minutes worth of trailers to get to the main play menu. And sometimes, the play menu is so animated that it isn't obvious how or when to actually start the movie.

When I had DVDs, I used to loan her a DVD-R copy of my movies since it was easier for her to play it without all of the trailers and menus.

It's a storytelling device, to create suspense by placing the narrative into the past tense and foreshadowing the downfall of the operation (and subsequent legal case/witness protection). It was there from day one and very intentional.

You'll have to explain how displaying a black bar over a portion of the ticket somehow creates suspense, places the narrative in the past tense, or foreshadows anything.

It's not a storytelling device. Scorsese shot the scene with a prop ticket, and then American Airlines demanded that their logo be removed because they didn't want to their brand to be associated with drug trafficking. Simple as that.

Popped this in just to evaluate the new transfer.

I ended up watching the thing.

Great movie, great transfer.

A cheaper version is coming out on 9/29 without the photo book. Currently $15 on Amazon and $10 on Best Buy.

I can't believe what little effort goes into designing these covers.

It seems to be missing the second disc as well. I can live without the photo book, but those other special features were pretty desirable, especially the documentary.

Re: Goodfellas 25th Anniversary Edition (05/05/15)

I think you are right. Bluray.com has it listed as a two disc set, but if you look at the back scan it doesn't mention a second disc. And the features listed match only the first disc on the other release.

For me, I could still probably do without the extras that I'm only going to flip through once and save $10 or so. I'm more interested in the remastered version.
