If they don't actually know the demand prior to release why not do a bit of market research prior to deciding to put out a title? I wouldn't think it would be too hard to put a poll up or something gauging interest in titles. They could then negotiate the number of discs they can print for potentially interested customers (possibly slightly above depending on the number) with the license holder afterwards. Seems like it would make a bit more sense. The only issue I could see is people who don't follow through with a purchase but at least they'd have somewhat of an idea on how much stock to have and wouldn't end up with a bunch of leftovers or people being out of luck that actually want one. They should also really limit the orders to one per person.

Whew...glad this thread became active again, almost missed out on the opportunity to pick up Fright Night. This is perfect timing, the Predator 2 2 disc cd OST is also a pre-order with a mid January planned release, and I have a few other titles in my cart (some have been in my cart for several weeks). The Fright Night pre-order is the excuse I needed to pull the trigger.
This is one of those films I would have picked up the first time it went up for sale, so hooray for second chances. I also saw this years ago on TV, and even cut...it struck me as more of an atmospheric horror film, not a gore heavy film, which makes it a rare horror film I am interested in picking up and viewing again.

The Twilight Time model may be the way future catalogue Blu-ray releases will be handled. Low volume = high price with a collectable factor.
I'm sure it is difficult to navigate how well certain titles will sell. If you look back at, let's say, the Manhunter Limited Edition from Anchor Bay back in 2001.
They pressed 100,000 copies of that title, according to the cover. Whether they actually pressed or sold that many remains to be known. As far as I know this title isn't worth much on the current market.
It's a great sales ploy. Who knows how many is enough to satisfy the market.
If they just released Fright Night without mentioning a limit maybe they would only sell 4,000 of them?
By advertising a limit of 5,000 they fabricate a greater demand and will easily sell all 5,000. This helps create a heated aftermarket which lends itself well to the sale of future limited edition titles.

I'll bet that it won't even sell a 1000 copies without the limited label or being discounted heavily. So yeah, the TT model will be the norm and not the exception. I'm resigned to that fact.

Also, you need to stop getting hung up up on the 3 per person limit. Everyone who is prepared to buy one of these in the next day or two will get one. It's not going to be a problem.

And if you wanna put your tin foil hat on you can also make the case that the server problems probably make people more anxious to spend money.

I've never wanted something so bad in my life, and I don't even remember if I liked the movie!

Why would you invest in better servers to account for a couple hours of poor performance on the rare event that they sell a genre title? Their servers handle the overwhelming majority of their release dates just fine.

Regardless, by putting a limit of three per customer that's just setting up the market for scalpers. I'm not worried about not getting one but it is sort of unfair to people who don't necessarily know about a release right away or aren't able to make the purchase at the time of release.
