Has the Bourne Trilogy Been Re-issued without BD/DVD Flipper Discs?

Universal had re-issued the Bourne Trilogy last year in BD / Digital Copy versions with no mention of a DVD.

Has anyone picked these up? Does anyone know if these are no longer the BD/DVD combo discs that (until this point) have only been available? I'd be more inclined to finally pick them up if that was the case.

I bought the trilogy set recently and they were BD only. Individual cases in slipcover, but NOT the same singles as your links.

I recently picked up the 2-disc steelbook versions of the Bourne trilogy movies.

They were all single-sided bluray discs, and separate dvd discs. (No double-sided flipper discs).

Thanks! Sounds like they did, then. I had issues playing The Jackal (same DVD/BD combo disc) so I held off on these.

I picked up The Jackal / Mercury Rising "double feature" bluray set a few years ago. The Jackal was a single-sided bluray disc in this particular set.

I too also held off on buying the Bourne trilogy, The Jackal, etc ... until I knew the single-sided bluray disc versions were definitive and easily available.

More generally, there was only a small number of double-sided "BD-59" bluray/dvd combo flipper disc titles released so far. Most of them are of movies that I have no interest in.

By now, most movie companies probably know that flipper discs are a "kiss of death" for most titles. Probably easier to spend slightly more on separate individual single-sided discs, than having to deal with unsold inventory returns and bad publicity on double-sided flipper disc titles.

Was there ever a three or four-film boxed set with UV codes, on that subject?

No. not yet. These reissues were the first versions of the movies released with UV codes.

hanshotfirst1138 08-23-14 07:36 PM

Any chance of one? I think this franchise is finished for the time being, so I can't imagine another tie-in release?

The spinoff series with Renner has its first sequel coming out in 2016.

Universal has been keen to reissue their catalog titles individually with the UV codes as of late. I wouldn't count on another box anytime soon.

Thankfully Universal saw the light and killed the flipper experiment. After massive problems with flipper DVDs, you would think Universal would have learned a lesson.

At least this time around, Universal acted relatively quickly on re-releasing the bd-59 flipper disc titles as single-sided bluray discs. (There's a few that they still haven't re-released yet as single-sided bluray discs, such as season 8 of The Office).

In contrast, they took their sweet damn time to eventually re-release most of the flipper disc tv season sets, as single-side disc sets. (ie. Magnum PI, Columbo, Murder She Wrote, the original Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, etc ...)

IIRC, the original Battlestar Galactica was just re-released earlier this year as single-sided discs, while the original flipper disc set was released back in 2004. It took a them a decade to get around to re-releasing it.

Re: Has the Bourne Trilogy Been Re-issued without BD/DVD Flipper Discs?

Found another Universal bd-59 flipper disc movie, that was re-released as a single-sided bluray disc version.

Today I picked up a steelbook version of Traffic (released by Alliance) from the local dump bins. It appears to be a single-sided disc duplicate of the Universal pressing, with the same style of interactive menus on just about every Universal bluray release.

(I haven't seen the movie previously, but awhile ago I did watch the tv miniseries based loosely on the movie).

Was there actual issues or just a few Blu-ray.com kids crying how they didn't have disc art? I have several and had no issues playing them.

A list of "bd-59" double-sided bluray/dvd combo flipper discs released in north america. (Excluding the Target/BestBuy/etc ... exclusive versions).

(Single-sided bluray disc version appears to exist).

Universal

- The Bourne Identity
- The Bourne Supremacy
- The Bourne Ultimatum
- The Jackal
- Traffic
- Out of Africa

Summit

- The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (special edition)

Warner

- A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (Extra Dope Edition)
- New Year's Eve

(Single-sided disc versions appear to not be available yet).

Universal

- The Office: season 8
- Big Miracle
- The Family Man

20th Century Fox

- Louie: season 1

Summit

- Letters to Juliet
- Furry Vengeance
- The Ghost Writer

(The Summit titles might have been released as single-sided discs in Canada by eOne, but not confirmed definitively).

Re: Has the Bourne Trilogy Been Re-issued without BD/DVD Flipper Discs?

In the case of Universal, their big "bd-59" test market was the Bourne trilogy. (Like a "sacrificial lamb").

It probably gave them enough market data and feedback to see whether it was a huge disaster or not. Including the first steelbook versions with flippers, and the various repackagings over the last few years (ie. Universal 100th anniversary, etc ...).

Probably wouldn't be too surprising if the flipper stench was completely non-removable, regardless of how the flipper discs were "repackaged". (Just like putting lipstick on a pig).

Gizmo 08-31-14 10:19 AM

Re: Has the Bourne Trilogy Been Re-issued without BD/DVD Flipper Discs?

What stench are we talking about? There was no huge backlash. What, a few kids didn't like they resembled HD DVDs and/or had no disc art? Or there 2007 Samsung POS couldn't play it?

I have several mentioned above and had no issues playing them at all.

morriscroy 08-31-14 02:04 PM

Re: Has the Bourne Trilogy Been Re-issued without BD/DVD Flipper Discs?

At most the stench was perception, and whatever complaints were showing up online (whether real or perceived mewling).

Nobody knows for sure how much backlash there was, in terms of $$$$. Universal isn't legally required to itemize such stuff in their formal financial filings with the SEC.

If they stopped doing bd-59 flippers, then most likely they thought the mewling was affecting sales (or potential future sales)

I had a very harold and Kumar Chirstmas as a flipper, and it stopped working after two years. I had to buy it in a four pack bluray set to get a non flipper version.

PhantomStranger 08-31-14 02:21 PM

Re: Has the Bourne Trilogy Been Re-issued without BD/DVD Flipper Discs?

Given the limited scope of the experiment, my guess is that Universal couldn't get manufacturing costs in line with a separate DVD and BD. They only wanted it so consumers wouldn't buy the BD for themselves and sell off the DVD.

I bought the 3D version the day it came out and my release had a separate BD and DVD. There must have been different pressings.

All the 3D editions of the film were all separate discs (3D, Blu-ray, and DVD). I have an original pressing with slipcover and its three separate discs.

Been noticing on various dvd bluray disc manufacturers' online web pages, many don't really offer bd-59, dvd-18, dvd-14, etc ... flipper disc manufacturing options. (Some do offer dvd-10 flippers).

I wouldn't be surprised if they warn potential customers against such flipper options.

morriscroy 08-31-14 07:28 PM

Re: Has the Bourne Trilogy Been Re-issued without BD/DVD Flipper Discs?

At the present time, I don't have any bd-59 flipper discs.

Back when I first started buying a lot of dvds in 2011, I learned very quickly how problematic the Universal dvd-18 flippers were. (Warner and Fox to a lesser extent). Eventually I figured out ways to extract most of the problematic dvd-18 flipper discs' isos in their entirety on the computer, without any problems. (I only have two flipper discs which are not extractable in their entirety. But eventually I found new flipper copies of the same titles in the dump bins for $2 or $7, where one was a tv show season set and the other was a tv miniseries).

So by the time I picked up a bluray player, I largely avoided any known cases of bd-59 flipper discs. In the end, the known bd-59 flipper titles I was interest in were all re-released as single-side bluray discs: Bourne trilogy, The Jackal, and Traffic. (The other known bd-59 titles I have no interest in. But I might pick up season 8 of The Office if I find it in the dump bins for something like $5).

Not exactly Roman Polanski or Pierce Brosnan's best efforts. Perhaps Polanski couldn't find anybody else to release this crap, besides Summit.

Back in 2008-2010, Summit was a small bit player where their only moderate/big hit was the Twilight Saga.

Bump! There is a new collection coming (w/ digital copies) and no flipper discs!

Best Buy will have a steelbook version w/ bonus disc and also includes The Bourne Legacy

http://images.static-bluray.com/movi...6771_large.jpg

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/bourne-c...oryId=cat02015

and everywhere else will have the regular version that doesn't include The Bourne Legacy

http://images4.static-bluray.com/mov...2103_large.jpg

http://www.amazon.com/The-Bourne-Tri...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

For an extra $5, you might as well get the BB version with the extra movie and bonus disc. Unless you are one of those people that pretend The Bourne Legacy doesn't exist ;)

Nice. Too bad I already have them all, but that's a nice new set. Just an FYI, the UK region free set discs do work as part of the disc to digital program on Vudu. I found that refreshingly surprising.

Re: Has the Bourne Trilogy Been Re-issued without BD/DVD Flipper Discs?

For me it really comes down to what is on the bonus disc since I already own Legacy on BD. If only the trilogy set came with the bonus disc!

Meh, the set that came out in 2010 is sufficient. There can't possibly be enough new bonus content to warrant a double dip.

Actually the Bourne Classified Collection comes with Legacy everywhere
The box set has a sleeve for Jason Bourne, which is kind of cool actually.

Best Buy Steelbook version is on sale for $27.99. Comes with $8 Fandango cash to see Jason Bourne.
Weird looking Steelbook, but I still sprung for it. Didn't have Legacy and wanted digital copies anyway.
The Steelbook has stacked discs and has enough room for Jason Bourne disc as well.

^ That's cool.
It would be even cooler if they'll offer some sort of mail-in program so they can send you just the disc and UV code of JB when it's out. Unfortunately, I doubt it'd work that way.

Re: Has the Bourne Trilogy Been Re-issued without BD/DVD Flipper Discs?

I was gonna grab this and trade in my 3 steelbooks and standard release of Bourne Legacy. But stacked discs 2 and 3 high really bugs me. I much prefer what Paramount/Warner did with the Mission Impossible Collection steelbook. It has individual hubs for each title and an additional hub for a future release. I wanted to save space but that case is a complete fail for me. I just saved around $30.

Edit: Oh well, I'm weak. Just picked up the Bourne Classified Collection steelbook along with The Divergent Series: Allegiant steelbook. Wondering what if anything I can expect in trade locally for the firt 4 Bourne titles.

I actually prefer the Target steelbooks. I just hope they get the exclusive steelbook for the new movie as well so they all match.

I actually reviewed this one way back when it was released. I found it quite enjoyable (or maybe I'm just a sucker for "author" type movies) and have had the flipper ever since. I'll have to be on the look out for the BD only version (I also did disc to digital on it so I don't have to abuse the disc all that much).

I have that set. It's not flipper discs. It worked with D2D as well, which was nice. I'd like to have the new set, but does it even offer any new extras? The new packaging isn't worth the double dip.
