"Out of region" on a region free set?

My Sony BR player has never had an issue but after buying Downton Abbey 1-4 UK BR set I have issues with season 3-4. They state "out of region"

S. 1-2 were fine, what's the dealio?

Series1 & 2 were all-region. Series 3 & 4 are both Region B only. Whoever makes the discs changed their minds about region restrictions.

Does it say on the packaging that it's supposed to be region free? I can't find any pictures of the rear cover. Do you mind uploading a picture?

They started locking the UK Downton Abbey Blu-rays after the show became a big hit in the United States. Too many Americans were importing the much cheaper UK sets.

Streaming the ISO from HDD works fine so I guess I can live with that

Is the video encoded at 1080/50i? If it is that could be why you are getting that message. A lot of US players won't play back content that isn't encoded at 60fps, or if there is SD content at the beginning that is in PAL format the player can't handle playback for that either.

If it's a region free set, what the hell? Did you switch the region depending on the disc? Where'd you get the region free player?

The UK versions of seasons 3 & 4 are not region free. I don't think the OP has a region free player either; just Seasons 1&2 which ARE region free.

Oh, I thought he meant the player was region-free, I misunderstood.
