I was actually thinking that The Strain probably wouldn't. But I guess it'll depend on if the ratings hold.

An amazon placeholder showed up for a possible bluray of Under The Dome season 2.
http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Dome-Season-2/20124 http://www.amazon.com/Under-Dome-Sea.../dp/B00M9T2I6E We'll see if really poorly written sci-fi can dodge the bullet of bluray discontinuations. |
re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
An amazon.ca placeholder showed up for a possible bluray of The Americans season 2.
http://www.amazon.ca/The-Americans-T.../dp/B00IRLKBVC EDIT: Also an amazon.co.uk placeholder: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Americans-Se.../dp/B00ITT1FL2 (It hasn't shown up yet on amazon.com). |
re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
More mediocre sci-fi with an amazon placeholder for a possible bluray of season 1 of Extant.
http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Extant-Season-1/20130 http://www.amazon.com/Extant-Season-.../dp/B00M4O1YXW Also season 2 of Vikings with an October 14, 2014 release date. (This looks like the eOne release version in Canada, and not the Fox/MGM version). http://www.amazon.ca/Vikings-Season-.../dp/B00M9HH3C0 |
re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
I just picked up The Firm: The Complete Series.
It's DVD only, but $15 for 22 episodes isn't a bad deal. Out of curiosity, I looked on Amazon to see how much HD digital episodes would cost. How much for the whole season? $50. I can only imagine the price-gouging hell we'll be in when digital takes over completely. |
re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
I mentioned that earlier- most TV seasons on Vudu or Amazon go for around $30-50. No way in hell I'm paying that much for something I can't put on my shelf.

In addition, there's amazon placeholders for blurays of other recent first season basic cable shows.
- Halt and Catch Fire http://www.amazon.com/Halt-Catch-Blu.../dp/B00KJ1CT54 - Turn http://www.amazon.com/Turn-Blu-ray-B.../dp/B00KJ1C01W - Tyrant http://www.amazon.com/Tyrant-Season-.../dp/B00LLU07H4 (No placeholders yet for The Last Ship or The Lottery). |
re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
One recent first season sci-fi show I was hoping to see released on bluray, was Almost Human.
But alas, Warner is only releasing it as mod dvd through Warner Archive. http://www.wbshop.com/product/almost...+1000517553.do Warner probably didn't see much point in releasing a canceled first season sci-fi/fantasy show on bluray, nor much of a market for a general dvd release. |
re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
In terms of past precedents of Warner releasing a cancelled first season show on bluray, the only one I can think of offhand is Alcatraz (back in 2012).
If Alcatraz didn't sell very well, then perhaps Warner got "cold feet" this time around with Almost Human. |
re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
I think at this point, we should just be grateful that some TV shows are getting manufactured DVD releases and not MOD DVDs.

re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
They've really slowed down on the Simpsons sets. Not that they were speedy with them to begin with, but we used to get two a year, now it's down to less than one a year. Season 16 came out a year ago, and 17 hasn't even been announced.

re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
Yeah, those are the only ones I'm still buying (not sure why...)
I vaguely remember Groening saying that he wanted to ensure that every set was fully-featured, including commentaries on EVERY episode. Maybe they're running into some major scheduling conflicts with that sort of thing now. I never bought the Season 20 set specifically because it came out out-of-order (before many of the previous seasons) and was practically bare-bones. I think they're in a tough place where there's people who WANT to keep putting out those season sets of The Simpsons, but there's just not enough people buying them any more. They should have pumped them out every 3 or 4 months from the start. Season 1 came out in late 2001. If they had managed to catch up to the latest season much sooner, I don't think it'd be so bad. But they're stuck in a situation where they have 16 sets released (not counting #20 because it would likely need to be re-released with commentaries, etc.), they're behind by TEN years now (currently on #26 on TV, right?), and they're not releasing new seasons as they go either. They would have been much better off to pump out each CURRENT season (meaning, shortly after the season ended) along with a legacy season, then another legacy season 6 months later. It would have been a little convoluted, but they'd have caught up much faster. |

After Season 9's DVD release in December of 2006, it's been once a year (season 10 came out August of 2007, Season 11 in October 2008, etc.) Al Jean has been asked about this and he said that it won't change. Fox isn't interested in doing more than one a year at this point. I'm honestly okay with it, if it means the same quality releases we've been getting. The special features on these later seasons is what makes them worth owning, most of the time the episodes themselves are ho-hum at best. |

That was a long time ago. Fox was more geared to get the golden era seasons out because they knew sales would taper off after Season 8.
(I haven't watched any Simpsons episodes since the early 1990's. Even back then, I only really watched random episodes when I was channel surfing). |

(I haven't watched any Simpsons episodes since the early 1990's. Even back then, I only really watched random episodes). It began what fans define as the "jerkass Homer" era, where he lost all human emotion and became even more of a jerk and a moron. Other things started happening in the show as well, but Season 9 was the last true season with occasional gems in it. Once Al Jean took back over in Season 13, quality started to come back up but it never returned to what it once was, or even close to when he ran the show with Mike Reiss. |
re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
Looks like no Modern Family Season 5 on Blu-ray either.

That sucks. I might get a digital HD version instead. Not as good as BD but better picture than DVD.

If the DVD versions come with UV codes, you could at least get HD versions in Vudu. Not much consolation, admittedly.

I didn't know that, but it's entirely possible. To be honest, all of the UV copies I've redeemed have been from Blus, so you're probably right.

re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
UV copies from DVDs almost always redeem in SD, not HD. There are exceptions but they are rare.

re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
(This is probably too early to speculate on possible future bluray sets of new upcoming first season shows).
At this point, the only new upcoming network show I can see which might possibly get a season 1 bluray release, would be "Stalker". Albeit based on the past reputation of the people behind the show, however flimsy: - Show being produced by Warner Bros Television. - Maggie Q in a lead role. Her character's backstory sounds similar to her previous role of Nikita. - Kevin Williamson producing. Kevin Williamson's previously created/produced shows like The Vampire Diaries and The Following, have both been released on bluray by Warner. Also Nikita was released on bluray by Warner. Reading through the imdb page for Stalker, the message board section seems to have some spillover of Nikita fans. Amusingly, there was even a thread speculating on Stalker being like a "season 5" of Nikita. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3560094/...nest/229724191 If there's enough "spillover" from the Nikita fanbase buying blurays, Warner might possibly see a case for releasing season 1 of Stalker in the form of a bluray+dvd+uv combo pack next year. |
re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?
I've signed up for a bunch of random Amazon "alerts," and they just notified me that NCIS season 8 is now available on BD!
Availability: In Stock. Ships from and sold by Just Pawn It. If I go to the page, that "offer" is nowhere to be found. Maybe there was one copy and someone bought it when they got the same mail. |
