Apparently they compress the hell out of their DCPs too -screwy-.

Ha! They're just one step ahead of the pirates! Nobody can pirate a high quality copy if they only release crappy versions to begin with!

IGN is reporting that Al Jean has indicated on Tweeter that Fox would stop releasing The Simpsons seasons on DVD and Blu-ray.

Wow, that is major news. I thought Fox would at least keep up appearances with their token yearly release of one season.

I remember buying the first Simpsons set, thinking, "I'm going to own ALL of these some day!"

I've kept up with it except for the most recent release. I kind of expected them to give up before catching up, but it's still disappointing.

Oh man, Simpsons sets were release I looked forward to the most. I was hoping we'd be getting the HD seasons (21 through now) on blu-ray since they'd look so good (and were strong seasons to boot), so much better looking than the SD seasons. If true, this is so disheartening!

Seriously fuck Fox. I can't believe that they would go all this way with releasing the series only to stop now. There has to be a somewhat decent amount of fans who still buy the one release a year they do to have released eighteen seasons of the series on DVD and Blu-ray or they would have stopped long ago. The line about digital downloads and piracy making the decision seem like bs to me too as that isn't anything new and hasn't stopped them all this time from releasing sets. I've bought every set to date plus the movie and am beyond pissed with this news.

Looks like they're really pushing for their streaming service and Simpsonsworld instead of physical releases. Maybe they'll release dvds/blu-rays as special edition, online only orders, kinda like Warner Archives. I mean, it is Simpsons. Even if the regular TV DVD market has dried up, they should be able to still make money selling Simpsons. They were always the best selling TV dvd sets.

re: Why isn't TV-on-Blu-ray getting any love?

The only thing I can think of that Fox might do for fans who want physical copies is doing what they've done with some of their other shows and releasing sets going forward via Amazon's MOD program. If that is the case I'd likely continue to purchase them just to continue my collection, but that would be fairly shitty since those releases tend to be over-priced with no extrass whatsoever plus most likely would be available on DVD only.

Man if this isn't the death knell for Network TV on disc, I don't know what is. I hate to think that I won't be able to finish out my collection.

I don't think any other studio would have cut off the Simpsons from release after this many seasons. Fox has a skeleton staff left for home video and they don't care anymore.

MOD releases were presumably suggested and shot down by Jean and crew: https://twitter.com/AlJean/status/585862077463396353

I'm still pissed about it. I really hope Fox reconsiders or comes up with an alternative. I just find it unbelievable that they pull the plug not after a few seasons and finding out it wasn selling, but going on with eighteen releases and suddenly the sales aren't there. That's just shitty. If they had continued on with the two a year schedule they were on we probably would have been caught up.

If the Simpsons on DVD/BD is dead there is no way we are getting The X-Files and Buffy/Angel on BD.

Why is Fox being such little bitches? Any other studio would be gladly continue releasing Simpsons.

If we get Buffy and Angel, after what happened with The Wire, we'll certainly get the picture opened up to 16X9, something Whedon and the DPs have said shouldn't happen. Granted, since it won't happen at all anyway; it's academic.

With the Simpsons World app and piracy it does seem possible that sales were down to the point that it isn't worth it for Fox anymore.

The thing is though with The Simpsons World app you would think that they would have taken into consideration how that might impact sales of the DVD and Blu-ray releases. Plus there's only been one release since the launch of that app (season seventeen) to gauge how much sales have been impacted at this point.

I dunno. Sci-fi/fantasy series very frequently get a pass by studios who otherwise avoid doing anything with TV-on-BD. I'm not optimistic about Blu-ray releases for any of those series (although I'd welcome the excuse to revisit Buffy and Angel), but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.

My pipe dream of a Blu-ray collection of Arrested Development does seem even more wildly unrealistic now, though.

That's correct, the studios believe a Blu-ray release for fantasy works as great advertising for those shows. That audience goes out and heavily buys DVDs/BDs.

This is all about Fox, not the Simpsons. Fox is moving hard away from all physical media, they are fully shifting priorities to streaming video.

And here I thought the thread might have been bumped for Teen Titans Go on Warner Archive.

I'm very surprised that Fox is even pulling the plug on DVD, but I guess this is all catalog content due to their release schedule. Was season 20 the only one that was released when it was still current? I would expect Fox to keep releasing their new action/sci-fi shows, however, at least for a bit longer.

They should at least let Olive Films release them like they have done for King of the Hill.

So is the first salvo in the death of DVD and blu-ray?

Digital downloads/streaming seem like a superior option for content owners in almost every way. They have full control of all aspects of distribution; they control the price, there are no secondary market copies floating around, they aren't competing for dwindling shelf space, they can pull access at any time and force consumers to re-purchase content after a certain amount of time (providing the desired constant revenue stream), and can control where and how their content is viewed.
