Jeff Goldblum huh? I really would like to see the alternate universe movie with him in it.

I've only ever owned one, the original DVD release from 1999. Everything else has been substandard. The blu is notoriously bad. They've never produced a version worth upgrading to. I hope this new blu is a better transfer.

The "Mastered in 4K" version that was released last year was a big improvement over the original BD in terms of video quality. It didn't have any extras, but presumably this new edition will be that transfer in addition to all of the extras on the original disc. Unless something goes horribly wrong, this should be the best version we're ever going to see in the HD era.

Although the reviews and a lot of people were critical of the exceptionally grainy 2009 BD, Reitman said that's the way the film should be and is his preferred transfer.

I agree the 4K disc is a major improvement, but keep in mind with all of the bonus features you'll have to expect some compression.

Did he say this in comparison to the 4K transfer? To me there's a big difference between normal grain (which the 4K disc has plenty of) and grain that's overwhelming the image because the contrast was jacked up too high.

Thankfully I'm perfectly happy with the barebones 4K disc. As the years go by I'm less and less concerned with extras.

Sucks the set with the statue is so expensive. I'll just order the digibook, never did upgrade to blu for these movies, I have the DVD set that came in slim cases and a little book. My son watches them once a week, so the big set might be worth it for him.

Reitman has never struck me as a very technical director. He most likely leaves those matters in the hands of his cinematographer - who in this case has since died.

Also, keep in mind that Reitman made those comments during a PR tour to promote the initial Blu-ray. What was he gonna say? "No, this totally sucks. Don't buy the Blu-ray"?

The gift set is down to $89.96 at Walmart.com and Amazon.com.

Not much of a surprise, but the Ghostbusters II deleted scenes have been detailed and they're not all included. Missing is:

  • Original ending
  • possessed Ray plot (which was chopped up and had parts used during the Run DMC song montage)
  • The river of slime invading the NYC subway system
  • Eugene Levy's character
  • Replacing the sign outside the firehouse from original to the Ghostbusters II logo
  • Louis using a trap in Venkman's apartment

Some others I'm probably forgetting. They also did not include the three remaining missing scenes from the first film.

What is included (for size) (from Blu-ray.com):

I haven't checked in on this thread in a while and am just seeing that 30th Anniversary history poster. I never knew that John Candy was one of Reitman's original choices for a role. I would have loved to have seen him involved, shame he turned it down.

I still think I'll get the digibook of the two films. The statue edition is cool but too expensive.

He was offered the role of Louis Tully in the first film, but he insisted on doing the role with a German accent. They didn't want that, so it ended up going to Rick Moranis instead.

    Here's a link for $5 off: http://ghostbustersmovie.tumblr.com/coupon

I was able to get Amazon to take $5 off my order, making it $13.96 for the digibook. YMMV, of course.

Did you place a pre-order then e-mail for a price adjustment or what?

I just did the same thing. Doesn't sound like any of the B&M stores will have this in stock tomorrow.

I saw Ghostbusters in it's original 70mm theatrical engagement - but I was too young to really notice the grain texture (or the lack thereof), but I'd think it would be toned down - a large screen, higher resolution... grain ... no, ew.

as for the new 4K theatrical DCP - there was light grain, but actually it looked great - and thankfully looked nothing like the horrible 2009 bluray release (as it shouldn't)

Oh, okay, I'll just take his word for it.

The SKU on Best Buy's website is 7 digits, instead of 8, meaning it should be carried in stores. In addition, the store pickup status is coming soon, instead of not available. Furthermore, an employee said that his store had three in the back on blu-ray.com.

I don't have any information on Target.

Target's website shows it as "not sold in stores".

Looks like nearly all of the Best Buy locations in my vicinity have it available for in-store pickup, though.

    As I posted in Blu-Ray Bargains ...

$15.96 at the Walmart in Germantown, WI. They had 3 copies (2 now) and no issues using the coupon. Great deal!
