The collection includes 8 discs:

• State Fair
• Oklahoma - Todd-AO (4K restoration)
• Oklahoma - Cinemascope
• Carousel
• King and I
• South Pacific Theatrical
• South Pacific Extended roadshow version
• Sound of Music

(no word why 'Sound of Music' is only one disc, and it's assumed 'State Fair' is the 1945 version - there isn't any indication that the 1962 version is included)

:bdance: Never getting around to buying South Pacific pays off (though I do own TSOM).

While I wouldn't be surprised if they could fit both State Fairs on a disc, I'd be fine with leaving it off. I'd still keep the DVD set, and don't plan to rewatch the 1962 version <s>ever</s> very often.

Okay, I had to buy in at that price. Several members of my family will appreciate it. I just wonder of it'll drop even lower after it's out if the presale price is already dropping this low.

Anyone else get this?
Have only checked out Carousel and Oklahoma!, and only about 10-15 minutes of each, but I'm generally happy (Carousel) to ecstatic (Todd-AO version of Oklahoma) about this package.
Haven't checked out King & I or State Fair yet, but even with the apparent quirks that K&I displays, this set is easily one of the best releases of the year (for the job they did on the Todd-AO version of Oklahoma alone). Even the sound is on a whole 'nother level.

It's great that Fox had the bright idea to partner with Amazon and make these available early in the year. Too many highly anticipated releases already get ghettoized to Q4. It's wonderful to have something of this caliber to dip into throughout the rest of the spring and summer.

Oklahoma! is truly stunning looking (and it features 7.1 sound) woo-hoo!

to create the pseudo 30fps look of the TODD-AO version the movie is 1080i - and as a result some of the imagery looks 3D (minus the glasses). :thumbsup:

Still continuing to marvel at the job Fox did on the Todd-AO of Oklahoma.
It may take a few weeks before I invest the time to watch it straight through in one sitting, but I'm having a blast pulling it out for a few minutes just to watch a scene or two. The 30fps combined with the clarity of the larger format almost gives it the appearance of hitting the motion smoothing/interpolation function on a newer set- i.e. that soap opera effect. Almost but not quite as the image here still has a very fine, almost imperceptible layer of grain that gives it a more organic look than you experience with digital processing. I can definitely see, in the scenes with Ado Annie and Ali Hakim, for example, where people are getting the sensation of 3D/ just like looking out the window.
This is one of my favorite films from the 50's and it is extremely satisfying to finally have a home video edition that works this impressively on an 8-10' wide screen.

Carousel- Like a lot of people, I also found this one to look a little dark at first glance. Changing the gamma profile from 2.4 to 2.1 though, helped brighten it up quite a bit and makes the daytime scenes look much more appropriate. With that easily adjusted display tweak, I'm very satisfied with this one.

King & I- I'm willing to accept the argument from Bruce Kimmel and others that the teal shading in this, and other films of the era like Desk Set, is a replication of the way these "color by Deluxe" films looked theatrically. Personally I'm not fond of the look, and would prefer a more nuanced and robust color palate like you can apparently see on the Vudu and iTunes downloads of K&I- but if this is indeed replicating a theatrical look I can accept it. OTOH, if they somehow go back and use the opportunity of the single disc release in the fall to encode the disc using the earlier,more robustly colored master, I'd be tempted to sell off the set and pick up the individual releases for all the titles.
In fact, I'm kind of tempted to do that even if they don't. I've got a feeling Oklahoma at least may get a retailer exclusive digibook release- and since I'm not going to get rid of my SoM one, and won't get much if I sell the single South Pacific- I may as well just watch the films in the set once, sell it off, and then rebuy the other four as they are released.

Would it have been possible to do 30 FPS at 1080p with current technology on Blu?

No, Blu-ray only supports 1080p at 24 fps.

1080i runs at 60 Hz (i.e. 60 interlaced fields per second). Each original frame in the movie's 30 fps photography has been split to two interlaced fields.

NTSC is 60 interlaced fields per second, which equates to 30 frames per second. NTSC is interlaced, not progressive scan.

Forgive me if I'm being obtuse, but 1080i is obviously interlaced too, isn't it? Obviously NTSC would be SD rather than HD, but it sounds like they both operate under the same principle?

Yes, all television broadcast in North America runs at 60 Hz. Standard definition is 480i at 60 interlaced fields per second. HD is either 1080i at 60 interlaced fields per second or 720p at 60 progressive frames per second.

A movie photographed at 24 fps will need to have 3:2 Pulldown applied to adapt to the new frame rate. Only Blu-ray and streaming offer 1080p at the original 24 fps rate.

The Todd-AO version of Oklahoma! was photographed at 30 fps. That can be adapted pretty easily to 60 Hz, but to encode on Blu-ray, it has to be either 1080i or downconverted to 720p, because Blu-ray only supports 1080p at 24 fps.

Defective Disk:

Has anyone on the forum tried to watch "Liliom" on the Carousel disk, it is defective.
The image is very small, and stuck in the upper left corner.
I would like to contact Fox, but want to make sure this is not an isolated defect.

I don't think it's the disc so much as how your player is formatting it since it is 4:3 standard def inside an HD frame. I get this phenomenon a lot, especially with Fox extra features.
Changing your player settings (from 1080p to 480p or something else) might work. Otherwise make sure your players firmware is up to date.
