Picked up the Target exclusive this morning. Not only does it have the Lego mini set, it also exclusive Lego animated shorts: Dwarven Dreams, Bard the Bowman: The Beginning and Middle-earth Motors

I decided against the traget exclusive, and got the regular 3 disc set. I hope the case they used doesnt become the norm for 3 disc bluray packaging. Its a 2 disc package with one disc on the left, and 2 discs stacked with each other on the right.

Re: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - April 8

I got the Target Lego set and the case is like you said, two discs stacked on one side and the third on the other side. Really don't like that, but hopefully the stronger surface of the Bluray disc will protect it.

And this is the first Peter Jackson LOTR movie my wife and I did not get to see in the theater, we just couldn't make it work this past winter, so we watched it last night.
Like the first part, it does not have the gravitas of the original trilogy, but I would still watch a new one of these every year if Christopher Tolkien were to ever take his chokehold off the other stories.

Unfortunately, it looks like that will become the standard for most 3/4 disc sets. These cases are marginally cheaper than the cases with swing trays.

At least with the sets where the third disc is a DVD, I can take the DVD out of the case and use it as a 2-disc case. (Did this with Pacific Rim and Dark Knight Returns.)

Extended Edition coming on 11/4. 3 disc standard version and 5 disc 3D version. Extended time is clocked in at 186 minutes, so it includes 25 minutes of new footage.

Sweet! No double dipping here since I never bought the theatrical cut.

Wondering when they'll announce the box set for the Hobbit trilogy and the massive set with both Hobbit and LOTR trilogies. I'm guessing sometime in 2015 for a holiday release.

Honestly, I don't get why anyone who's a fan of the series would buy the TC.

Probably at least 2016, since the extended of the third one will be in November 2015, that gives a year to sell the individuals before packaging them together.

Probably the OCD and need to have something to hold them over until the EE hits. Granted, these people will still complain after the fact.

Because while I generally enjoy the films, I still feel like they're bloated and overlong as is.

Note that I didn't feel this way about the LOTR trilogy, and I waited for the extended cut of all of those.

I don't own the EE of the first Hobbit film at this point, and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I can't really see myself ever needing the others.

Holy crap, given that AUJ had so little new footage, this is a big difference. This movie' spacing was already lopsided, Jackson is lucky he has the clout he does, not many people would be allowed this level of excess. Not that I mind . I'm still waiting on the inevitable mega-Middle Earth boxed set with all six films, UV, and all of the extras, but man alive, is it excruciating! I'll get the EE from the library again. After that, the BOTFA EE probably won't be out until 2015, and the boxed set after that. Fuck, what a wait.

Still going to wait for a box of the Hobbit extended versions. We've been getting the theatricals to hold us over (and for the Lego sets), but I can wait for the longer versions.

Jackson teased/joked at comic con that there's even more stuff that was shot for the LOTR trilogy that he could include in a new EE box set if he wanted to

Picked up the first extended, will be picking up this extended one also. Have the LOTR extended, don't own any of the theatricals. I love the sheer amount of extras they include.

So we should just wait for just the extended versions of every movie because clearly according to you guys, the TC are inferior?

I like having both the TC and EE because the LOTR and to a certain extent The Hobbit is dear to me. I don't think that the EE are definite versions of these series as you guys imply. I like the TC of The Fellowship compared to the EE for example. New Line and Warner never made it a secret that an EE will be forthcoming so no, I'm not one of those that complains about buying both versions or and I'm OCD about having every version.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the TC and EC releases have different features.

Target is getting a steelbook of the EE. Looks to be 2D only though (should go nice next to the 3D only version of the first movie from Best Buy )

Why now? Is it coming out to tie in with Battle of the Five Armies?
