In the film, actors provide voiceovers for the main creatures. Director Barry Cook said the original plan was for the film to be without dialogue or narration. He said, "I think originally, we were looking at a film that could stand alone as a virtual silent movie... You can turn the soundtrack off and still get involved with the story and feel the emotions of the characters. In its final version, the movie has a narration and goes inside the heads of the animals, so you can hear what they're thinking."[13] Executives at 20th Century Fox, one of the film's main distributors, viewed a rough cut and thought the film needed voiceovers so children in the audience could connect to the characters.[31] The film's character designer David Krentz said, "Although the production veered away from being very realistic, the animation still plays independently. The powers that be decided to add narration and voice-over to reach a wider audience and the characters became slightly anthropomorphized to make them more attractive to younger kids."[13] Palaeontologist Steve Brusatte responded to The Scotsman's prompt about the "danger of anthropomorphising" the dinosaurs, "The voiceovers are a bit of a compromise; the dinosaurs' lips aren't moving, they are not smiling and having human-like facial expressions or anything like that... They are only anthropomorphised to a small degree and that is necessary for a film like this."[22] |

and having the dinos talk probably hurt whatever chances it had at the box office. (well tht and frozen)

Well that certainly explains why the voice overs seemed tacked on during the trailers. I was hoping there'd be a voiceover-free version and am glad there is. If the price comes down enough, I'll get it.

as for Fox's decision to enact the voice over change - well that certainly back fired and bit itself on the ass. Gathering from what was/is being said on WwD's facebook page it's a pretty divided opinion that kids under the age of 10 liked the dino's talking - but most of the adults just thought it was akin to hearing someone scratching their nails on a chalk board. |
Re: 'Walking with Dinosaurs' bluray deluxe edition hints at original undubbed version
some clarification of the 'Cretaceous Cut' - as noted before it's an exclusive on the 3D combo pack - it's the 75 minute version of the film - it doesn't include the human intro/ending bookend scenes of the film, and there's no end credits - unfortunately it's not in 3D - so .... win some, lose some. [sigh]

Re: 'Walking with Dinosaurs' bluray deluxe edition hints at original undubbed version
actually I might be wrong - supposedly the Cretaceous Cut IS viewable in 3D (as denoted as such in the blu-ray.com review of the disc) - I'm just not seeing that option in the menu tab - so disregard my past comment in posting #7
EDIT: so yes it is in 3D as well: "When you select "Cretaceous Cut" from the Extras menu, there's a secondary menu that pops up where you can choose either 3D or 2D. If you don't have a 3D display connected to your player, you may not get that option--that's how other similarly authored discs work." |

Wasn't The Disney movie Dinosaurs originally going to be a no talking movie too?

The dialogue in Walking with Dinosaurs was imposed by the studio after the movie was mostly complete. The dinosaurs mouths don't move when they speak. |

the first trailer for Dinosaurs was the wordless opening - I remember being quite impressed - until they started talking.

Saw this over the weekend and the dub was just insulting. My 5 and 2 1/2 year old watched the first 15 minutes and wandered off to play.
