Riddick -- 1/14/2014

Debuting an Unrated Director’s Cut with even more intense, heart-pounding sequences not shown in theaters and an alternate ending, the Blu-ray Combo Pack includes bonus features that reveal the behind-the-scenes secrets of the heart-stopping thriller’s incredible cast, uniquely talented crew and cutthroat characters. In addition, Riddick will be available in a new collection that includes all three movies in the groundbreaking franchise: Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick plus The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury.

Bonus Features Exclusively on Blu-ray:
- The Twohy Touch—In this short film, writer and director David Twohy explains the development of Riddick, the third feature film in his high-concept sci-fi series. Interviews and on-set footage detail Twohy’s vision and inspiration, as well as the creative collaboration between the filmmaker and star Vin Diesel that takes the cult franchise to a new level.

-Riddickian Tech—The filmmakers, including Riddick’s amazing effects team, talk about the extraordinary technologies used to create Riddick’s eye-popping sci-fi elements, from the practical effects to the green screen wonders that made it possible to bring this high-intensity, futuristic thriller to the big screen.

- The World Of Riddick—Key members of the filmmaking team, including director David Twohy, production designer Joseph C. Nemec III and director of photography David Eggby talk about the inspiration and influences behind the film’s vivid and unique visuals and savage predators.

Bonus Features on Blu-ray and DVD:
- Vin’s Riddick—Vin Diesel, his co-stars and the entire filmmaking team provide an inside look at the superstar’s passion for everything from the film’s production and development to his intensive physical training, as well as just what makes Diesel ideal for the role of the indestructible Richard B. Riddick.

- Meet The Mercs—From Karl Urban and Katee Sackhoff to Jordi Mollà, Dave Bautista, Bokeem Woodbine, and Nolan Gerard Funk, this featurette spotlights the dynamic supporting cast of Riddick and the characters they portray, exploring what the actors bring to their roles, as well as the weapons and clothing styles that define them to enhance this heart-stopping thriller.

- Riddick: Blindsided—A motion comic prequel to Riddick that fills in the gap since 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick.

I liked the theatrical cut, but figured there was more waiting to be shown on BD.

I'm so down for this one. This warrants a day 1 pickup for me.

I liked this pretty well. I'll pick it up if there's a set of the three films all together as I don't have Pitch Black or The Chronicles of Riddick yet.

I skipped it in theaters when I heard the BD would have an extended cut. Looking forward to seeing this.

There is a set. It'll also include Dark Fury in 1080p and DTS 5.1 for the first time.

Time to retire my HD DVDs of the previous two films!

Looks like I'll get the 4-movie collection since I never picked up Pitch Black or Chronicles.

Fuckin' A. Loved the genre goodness of Riddick.

Was holding out for something like this with the other films.

I hadn't heard that. The recently released BD collection still had it on DVD.

I'd like source that says DF is getting HD.

It could be the site emphasizing that as opposed to it coming from the actual PR release, though.

Re: Riddick -- 1/14/2014

Nice, I missed this in theaters so I'll probably blind buy it as part of the complete collection. Never got around to picking up the old release even when it was under $20, but glad I waited if Dark Fury is finally on Blu.

Re: Riddick -- 1/14/2014

I don't believe Dark Fury was animated in an HD resolution. The DVD was non-anamorphic letterbox because that was all the resolution in the source, which was a cheapie direct-to-TV production churned out to promote the second movie.

My guess is that it will be SD again, or possibly upconverted, but not native HD.

Sweet. I can finally retire my HD DVD's and get to see Dark Fury for the first time ever.

Just to save some people the trouble. The new collection has Pitch Black and Dark Fury on one blu ray disc. Dark Fury is still in standard definition and it's audio has been dropped down from 5.1 to 2.0. So if you have the prior collection, stick with it since Dark Fury is on a separate disc with 5.1 audio. Can't believe Universal fucked up this one.

Re: Riddick -- 1/14/2014

That's a pretty good price for all three films, I might have to go with it. The first and third are pretty good, the second is weak, but does this include the DCs of all three?

As Josh pointed out, it was probably created in SD as a cheapie to promote the attempt to make a big franchise out of the second movie. Although dropping it from from 5.1 to 2.0 is an utter mystery to me.

Not sure what price you are referring to. Amazon has it for $40 and Best Buy for $35. Both pretty shitty prices, considering you can pick up the other collection for around $15 at Wal Mart. I actually picked it up for $5 when I bought Obilivion a couple months ago, but that deal may be deal by now. But if you are picking it up because of the digital copies, yes, it includes all 3 main films, but not Dark Fury.

I would consider that a pretty good price for three Blu-Rays plus extras, one of which is a new release.

I won't shop at Wal-Mart, and the other collection doesn't contain the third film, does it?

I'm thinking of picking it up because I don't have any of the films on video and this seems like a good price to get all three at once. The digital copies will be gravy. I assume that discs themselves are the director's cuts and the digital copies are the theatrical versions?
