Once you buy a blu ray that you already own on dvd, do you sell the dvd?

I like to keep the DVDs around, because few of my friends and relatives have Blu-ray players. So if they want to borrow a movie, it's gotta be a DVD. If I by chance happen to buy a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack and I already have the DVD, I'll get rid of the original DVD...but only if it's the exact same copy as the one in the combo pack. Yes, I DO put both DVDs in the computer and open DVD Decrypter to make sure that they have the exact same number of bytes. If they don't, I keep 'em both.
Yes, I'm aware that I have OCD when it comes to my collection.

For what little they garner, it's not worth investing in a padded envelope then going to the post office. I was trading them in at BB U&S or I'll give them to my parents if I think they'll like the movie. I have an entire set of James Bond movies on DVD after getting the James Bond 50 set for Christmas. I'll probably bring those over to the library.

I'm going to try a different way to consolidate my DVD collection. I ordered 50 blank amaray cases that hold 6 DVDs, and are the same size as a single amaray case. So I'll put 6 movies in each case and put all the cover sleeves together on top of each other. I'll make a custom label so I can see which movies are on the spine. That way the space needed for 6 movies will shrink down to one.

(A year ago I had to go through a whole remodeling of my home office to create more storage space of my close to 3500 titles.)

I just don't like the idea of having an empty slot in my blu ray combos, so I never sell or get rid of them. Besides, a good chunk of my combo titles seem to be PG and kid friendly titles, so my kids use those. I'll keep some old DVD releases if they have extra content the blu's don't (the 4 disc set of Kingdom of Heaven for example). For most others, I sell them off to a local used DVD/Blu ray/CD store. On some, I sell them on EBay for actually pretty good prices (just sold a copy of the documentary Flamenco for $37). Amazing that they do get sold, along with my old school laserdiscs. Someone's trash is someone else's treasure. Although, I wouldn't really say any of my old DVD's are trash - except for a handful maybe.
Something like this I did recently was I used a six disc case from the slim Buffy season sets that I found for $1 at Half Price Books (because it was missing a disc) and I used it to combine my Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box with the two disc DTS remasters of TS 1 & 2 so that they all fit into the Toy Box case. (Anybody want the slipcovers of the DTS remaster DVDs?)

If you're going to shove six movies into a single case like this, the cover art for five of them will be hidden at all times.
Personally, I think that DiscSox are a much better option.

If the blu-ray doesn't come with a digital copy and is available for the disc to digital on Vudu then I use the DVD to get an HD copy and then sell it.

No, because DVD are more or less worthless in the resale market now.

How will you organize the movies? Alphabetically? That will entail a tremendous amount of case swapping any time you add a new movie or sell an old one.

The DiscSox system looks great, but I don't want to spend that kind of money (close to a buck each) on discs that I'll probably never watch again. It's been a long time since I've watched a movie on DVD.

I noticed you gave a link to a DVD case.. from my findings most 'Blu-Ray' cases of like number of disc storage are thinner/smaller allowing for more disc's to be stored in the same space.

A couple of bucks in your pocket and more space on your shelf can't be too bad though. I'm thinking about selling off some of my stuff, if only because I really can't think of anything else to do with it.

Usually, but I've a handful of times where I haven't.
For instance in the case of 'Grindhouse' (2007), I kept the DVDs because they are the Extended Cuts.
In less logical situations like 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (1974), 'Friday The 13th' (1980) and 'Halloween' (1978), I have kept the DVD versions I have because they are some of my favorite Horror films.

For the most part I usually get almost half what I originally paid.(with the exception of the mass produced Hollywood titles) And they take everything at once and I don't have to bother trying to sell them on craigslist 1 at a time. For that convience, I don't mind getting top dollar for everything.
There is however, a pawn shop in Vancouver too, that gives you 75 cents a title no matter what you have. So yeah, like I said, it depends on where you take it. I'm sure in the bigger cities, if you do a little searching you can usually find a place that offers something decent for trade ins.
PS I'm shocked that I'm replying to one of your posts and it isn't in the MMA thread lol.

I might do that for Blu-ray someday, but the DVD sleeves obviously won't fit in them and I'm just consolidating DVDs for now. The link that I gave is for 14 mm cases, which is the same thickness as a standard single disc DVD case. I can't believe the 6 disc BLu-ray cases are much thinner than that (maybe 1-2 mm at most).

I sold off most of my 1500+ dvd collection for top dollar before BD came out. Now I am trying to sale my Mom's small collection. She has a lot of TV shows on dvd that have never been open & I hardly get any bites on them when trying to sale on CL.

Re: Once you buy a blu ray that you already own on dvd, do you sell the dvd?
My thing about selling DVDs is that even $15 or so per title is usually not worth it when you factor in shipping, ebay fees, paypal fees, and (mostly) my time in the whole process of selling them. My time is worth too much (IMHO), so unless I think a title will get $25 or more, I would rather just give it away, or at least not make a true effort at getting rid of it.
I know it's all semantics, and we can each juggle all the factors in our minds to justify any decision we make, but that's where I am.
To sell even 500 of my DVDs at a super optimistically $2000 profit after fees would probably take at least 50 hours of time for listing and packaging and correspondence and mailing. In theory that is more than I make per hour and 'worth' my time, but I'd rather not have the hassle and use my time for other things and enjoy giving the titles away. /ramble off

I've sold all my DVDs that I upgraded to Blu except on the rare occasion the DVD has special features the Blu doesn't. Case in point, Kingdom of Heaven 4 disc director's cut has tons of special features. The Blu has none, so I kept both.

Re: Once you buy a blu ray that you already own on dvd, do you sell the dvd?
Oh, I've parted with just about every upgraded title. The only ones I've kept so far have been:
The Adventures of Indiana Jones box set, keeping for the Bonus Materials DVD, and because I just love that box set
Casino Royale (2006), Walmart exclusive with poker set, keeping for the poker stuff
The Departed (Two-Disc Special Edition DVD), keeping for Scorsese on Scorsese TCM doc
Tombstone (VISTA Series DVD), keeping for the extras and the different cut of the film
I also bought Jurassic Park on Blu-ray, but I'm still keeping my Jurassic Park Trilogy box set for the sequels and the bonus disc. At some point, I'll probably pick up the sequels on Blu if I find them cheap enough (probably in time for Jurassic World next year at the latest, I would think), but I'm in no rush.
I don't really travel or even take movies to watch with other people all that often, so format redundancy isn't important to me. Some discs, I've given to family or friends; others, I've just taken to Half Price Books. They don't pay much, but I'm okay with that. I find enough stuff there that I want, and I've scavenged quite a bit from their clearance stuff, that I figure the difference between what they pay and what I might get elsewhere is easily negated by the combination of the difference in what I'm saving by buying what I want there when possible and the ease of not having to package or wait to find out that a buyer isn't going to whine about something.

Re: Once you buy a blu ray that you already own on dvd, do you sell the dvd?
I find eBay has become a major hassle, especially shipping from Canada to the US.
It was great back in 2000 when the Canadian dollar was so low. If you sold something for $63 US it equaled $100 in Canadian dollars. Since about 2004 the dollar has been on par (give or take 8%).
With eBay, the maximum shipping cost allowed is $3 but sending Canada to the US is close to $6 in actual cost with a padded envelope.
Sell a DVD for $15 + $3 for shipping.
eBay takes about $3, a padded envelope costs about $.60, lose an additional $3 for shipping difference.
I net about $11.50 not including my time for correspondence, packaging, special trip to the post office etc.
It's barely worth it.
Craigslist is fine if you have a lot of titles someone might be interested in.
Few people are going to spend $6 in gas to drive out to your house to buy a $3 DVD.

I usually keep the dvd if there are extras not on the blu ray. Otherwise I'll trade in the DVDs

Re: Once you buy a blu ray that you already own on dvd, do you sell the dvd?
Since most DVDs aren't worth much, I end up keeping some DVDs just for the artwork or packaging. Many DVD SE's are alot more impressive looking than their BD counterparts. In the early days of DVD especially, some SE's were pretty impressive (Fight Club, Rocky Horror, Planet of the Apes 2D) I don't keep all the stuff I upgrade, but I do keep some. I'm probably the only person on these forums that collects snappers.

If the DVD contains any special features that are not on the Blu Ray, I will make my own combo pack and keep both. If not, I will trade in the DVD at FYE or give it to a friend.

Nope, they are not worth the effort it takes to sell them. My time is more valuable then the $1-5 the DVD may bring in.
