I'm fairly certain that The Little Mermaid will be Disney's last 3D conversion of a classic animated title. The studio pulled the planned theatrical release for that one after disappointing box office returns for Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo. The Mermaid Blu-ray only got 3D because the conversion was already in the works before the theatrical plans were scrapped. I have to assume that's the end of 3D conversions at Disney.

For whatever inexplicable reason, Disney has long treated Aladdin as the black sheep of their 1990s animation renaissance, even though it was a huge hit, well-reviewed and still beloved by many viewers. They treated it badly on DVD, and removed the title from the Diamond Collection line. Someone at the studio must really dislike it.

The film had its controversies from the beginning. It's not really surprising in this pc world that they would look down on the film a bit.

The general depiction of Arab culture... It's seems harmless, but with today's ultra-hyper PC society, you can't offend anyone, even if not intentional. (I believe one complaint was the hero arabs were more white than the other characters...) - The irony the thing that was changed (song lyrics) was true.

Not really, I remember there being grumbling back in '92 when it was released by Arab anti-defamation groups. - The song was the big deal, but characters were also a problem.

At least we'll get Aladdin, we're probably never going to see Song of the South.

Aladdin would've been a solid choice for a 3D transfer and screening as well. It's really their only other catalog title besides the Lion King (which did really well) that 1. Is well suited to 3D, 2. Has the same kind of nostalgia from people who saw it originally in theaters and are parents now, and 3. Appeals to both sexes.

So, yeah, someone at Disney has something against Aladdin. Glad I still have the DVD in my collection, as my girls love it.

The Lion King had almost as many complaints from the PC Brigade, about casting lilly-white actors Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Matthew Broderick as the voice of the African hero, the depiction of many of the villain animals as racial caricatures, etc. Not to mention the "SEX" message animated in the clouds that they had to digitally erase later. Yet Disney considers that one a crown jewel in its catalog.

The remaining Pixar stuff is coming, it's just a matter of when. All of them have been completed. (No theatrical release, but 3D BDs will be coming out.)

If I remember correctly the only ones left are A Bug's Life, The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Wall-E.

I picked up the UK Aladdin a bit back and it's great in Blu. Will hold me over until the US version comes out.

How was the DVD bad? I know they waited a while to release it, but I thought it was done well enough. The extras were a bit lightweight, but at that time they were already dumbing them down some.

Aladdin is my favorite modern Disney animated film, and I hope the BD is good.

I was referring to the fact that they waited a really long time to release Aladdin on DVD, and finally did so with weak supplements and negligible promotional fanfare. The release was perfunctory. They treated Aladdin more like one of thier lesser, forgettable efforts - like Oliver and Company or The Fox and the Hound - rather than like the huge box office hit and critical component in their '90s renaissance that it was.
