Question about a Blu-ray feature...
I'm not sure if there's another forum here better suited to address this. If so, please move it.
Here's the issue. On my Blu-ray of IRON MONKEY (a Miramax release), whenever I hit "Pause," a menu image indicating the chapter, plus a timeline, appears, blocking part of the image. Which annoys the hell out of me. Why does it do this? No other Blu-rays I have employ this feature. Here's what it looks like: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2842/9...23d576c757.jpg And here's a closer shot: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7321/9...fd2e333c1f.jpg This is especially annoying when you pause because you want to get the exact wording of a subtitle: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2836/9...c17060e960.jpg What genius came up with this? Is it like this on all Miramax Blu-rays? |
Re: Question about a Blu-ray feature...
Probably better suited to HD Talk...
It's really annoying, and I believe it depends on how the disc is authored, which is why it varies so much from disc to disc. I've noticed it a lot on Fox discs, and sometimes I'm pausing to see something that... I don't want to have obscured. :) It may not be common to all Miramax titles, but if there are a bunch all from the same approximate generation (e.g., if they acquired a certain catalog and are releasing a number of them at the same time), it's likely they're all like that. |
Re: Question about a Blu-ray feature...
I've encountered that quite a few times. Annoying as hell.

Re: Question about a Blu-ray feature...
It does this on the Scream blu-rays. Not with a picture, though, if I recall correctly.

Thanks for moving this. I don't normally equate Blu-ray with HD and I never entered the HD Forum before, so I never would have thought of that. In the future I will.
Anyways, the Star Wars Blus have this also, we were watching Empire over the weekend and I was making cookies and noticed this when pausing. But it also goes away after a minute or two (long enough to pull cookies from the oven and start the next batch). |

Re: Question about a Blu-ray feature...
So why isn't this called the Blu-ray Forum? I would have thought--if I'd bothered to think about it--that HD referred to Hi-Def TV broadcasts or something, not to a disc format. I'm sure I'm not the only old fart on this board who was wondering where the hell the discussions on Blu-rays were.

Re: Question about a Blu-ray feature...
It's called HD Talk because when this forum was added there were two competing formats.
|
Re: Question about a Blu-ray feature...
I have many Blu-ray titles that have these pop-up timelines. It's kind of annoying, I guess, but I've seen it so much that I don't really think about it too much.
Also HD Forum = all things HD, including shiny plastic discs. |
Re: Question about a Blu-ray feature...
It annoys me too.
I'm sure someone will start a thread to have the forum name changed now, sine we're all so 'changey' lately.... |
Re: Question about a Blu-ray feature...
HD Talk The place to discuss HD DVD, Blu-ray and all other forms and formats of HD and HDTV. |

Couldn't figure it out?
Home Theater Forum calls its Blu-ray board: Blu-ray. And here's the link: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/88-blu-ray/ |
Re: Question about a Blu-ray feature...
Sometimes you can press an arrow key such as the down arrow to manually have the overlay go away, but that can vary from disc to disc.

Another odd variant to this is with 3D discs. When the popup menu appears, the movie suddenly becomes 2D. I thought it was a player or format limitation but I notice that some movies like Journey 2: The Mysterious Island keep the movie in 3D as well as the popup menu. I don't get why most other movies default to 2D when the popup appears or, in the case of Disney 3D BD's, defaults to 2D when you chapter skip because the damn disc insists on showing you a screenshot of the chapter and the title of the chapter for a few seconds. I end up having to backtrack a few seconds before the chapter so the popup will be gone by the time the chapter begins. |

Considering we talk about 4k, HD streaming etc that would be silly.
