I like them mostly because they don't use the standard photoshopped floating head artwork, and the back is not covered in specs/barcodes/bullet points. It's just a nice, clean, elegant package.
Technically you can collect anything regardless of value. You like shiny rocks, go ahead and collect them. What I refer to is the inherent collectability of items. Things that were once common but now rare and highly sought after have high collectability and high value because of it. Cars, stamps, coins, books, can all be rare and highly collectable meaning there is a large base of people looking for an item that at one time maybe wasn't popular, or had a manufacturing flaw.

Velvet Elvis', beanie babies, Dale Earnhardt collector plates are all manufactured collectibles. Meaning they are looking for a niche' market right from the NIB status. Those values and the market for them tend to be fleeting.

I enjoyed having a nice movie collection. It didn't matter what the packaging was as long as it was functional.

Snow White and Sleeping Beauty both got SteelBooks with slipcovers. No lenticular art, though.

Well good for you. How enlightened you are to hold yourself above caring about material possessions.

News flash: Other people may like different things than you do.

There are literally millions of people out there who consider you foolish for owning movies at all, in any form.

Especially the studios.

I'm with Jim.

I like a collectible occasionally but I'm just happy to have the movie.
Eco packaging doesnt bother me a little bit. Snappers were the only ones I hated.

Seems like a harsh conclusion to jump to, given the 2 posts he had about it. Sounded to me like it was an innocent question to verify if there was anything else different.

I will quote the entire passage not just a portion of it.

Point 1) I didn't say I was enlightened, this entire thread is about opinions whether they agree with yours or not. I merely stated mine. I think special packaging is a foolish expenditure.

Point 2) We are in total agreement that other people like different things. I like old cars, to others they are simply old cars.

Point 3) Again we are in total agreement. Millions do think my owning movies of any kind is foolish. In fact there are many times I look on my shelves and agree with them. Why the hell did I buy this or that when a rental would have sufficed. Or I bought one on sale and there it sits still wrapped a year later. So yes it was a foolish expenditure.

See, we are actually in nearly complete agreement

I thought the same thing. Seems like he just wanted to know if there were any other extra added bonus attractions.

The violent reaction to his question reveals a certain hubbabubbaosity.

I think you're insane. Of course I may be wrong.

Re: What's the point of a Blu Ray steelbook?

Steelbook of The Shining, showed up today. Wow!

I'm slowly converting some of my favorite DVDs to BluRay. I just ordered 3 more from BestBuy (The Fifth Element, The Matrix, Top Gun), at prices lower then I can do at Amazon or Walmart, and they are not Steelbook.

Hey this is an old thread. I only just heard about steelbook. Considering how often I look at this website, it is no wonder that I am 5+ years behind the times.

For what it's worth, more current discussion of Blu-ray Steelbooks is going on in this thread:

Jesus people. There doesn't have to be a point. Some people like to collect them. Others don't. If the packaging has no interest to you. So be it.

It's like asking what's the point of the complete series or other deluxe packaging in some unique package, etc.
