Has anyone gotten a DVD from a BD/DVD combo pack to work? I've been unsuccessful. I tried with Amazing Spider-Man and got an error.

I've only tried a couple times (when the BD didn't identify correctly). My success rate is probably 50%. Off the top of my head, the MegaMind DVD worked for me, but the Chronicle DVD didn't.

The DVDs that give me the biggest problems are the dual-sided (Widescreen/Fullscreen) discs from Columbia/Tristar. I don't think I've gotten any of those to work.

My fav is when it doesn't recognize a SKU (Not Another Teen Movie DVD), and lets you enter in it. You can find whatever you want on the net, enter it, and bang, upgrade!!

From the Flixster computer App...

Doesn't flixster only provide SD?

Re: VUDU - 50% Off Disc-to-Digital Conversion ($1 BD & $2.50 DVD)

I ordered a Samsung external BD drive. With this 50% off deal, I'm going to convert everything I have that didn't have a HD digital copy, at least the ones that are part of the program. Then sell off a huge chunk of discs. I'm going to keep my personal favorites and big blockbuster type films, but HDX is pretty damn good quality, especially for $1 per BD. That'll be fine for me with some of the comedies I own.

Let's hope Walmart never dumps Vudu.

Even if Vudu gets dumped, you'll still own the HD copies in UltraViolet, and can watch them through another UV provider.

Why would VUDU go away if Walmart dumps them?

I've converted about 50 discs tonight. Even when some were listed as being available titles, I was still given some disc errors. Also some goofy stuff like I, Robot scanning as Die Hard 4, Fellowship of the Ring scanning as Return of the King, etc.

Yeah I've had the same experience. If they don't fix them before sale ends then I'm going take them to Walmart.

Can you still get the 50% discount if you take it into Walmart? Do they still put stickers on the discs after converting them?

I thought the sale included taking them to Walmart (as long as you convert 10 or more). Is it limited to home conversion only?

The discount only applies to the in-home software. If you take them to Wal-Mart, you'll be charged full price ($2/$5).

They don't use stickers, it's an ink stamp. In my experience, the ink wipes off pretty easily. My local store only stamps discs about 50% of the time. It depends on if they can find the stamp and whether the clerk is willing to put in the effort.

Thanks, TheBigDave.

No discount, no sale. I've been waiting for a week for a response to a trouble ticket I opened with them about a DVD that isn't recognized by their software.

So you are actually just going to have a 'library' digitally and not physically?

THis might sound silly, but why not just rip them instead? As much as I like UV, I can't feel secure that it won't just disappear one day.

I'll still have a physical collection. I'm just going to keep personal favorites. I've had too many blind buys in the past collecting dust, or films that only got 1 viewing.

So your paying $1 for a digital copy and selling off the blind buys? Not a bad idea....

Re: VUDU - 50% Off Disc-to-Digital Conversion ($1 BD & $2.50 DVD)

I converted 17 discs online but had a handful that wouldn't scan. This morning, I drove all the way out to Walmart, which is not at all convenient for me. The old bat in the photo center had no idea what the Disc-to-Digital program is, despite literally standing underneath a big VUDU sign. She thought I was trying to have home movies burned to DVD, which they'd have to be sent out for. I showed her my bag of DVDs and asked her why I would want them burned to other DVDs. She looked at me like I had three heads.

She tried to call a manager on her walkie talkie, and he basically told her to stop bothering him, that he was too busy for this shit, and she'd have to figure it out for herself. Then she told me to come back in four hours when the next shift starts, and maybe somebody then would know what I was talking about.

I just walked away at that point. What a waste of time and fuel.

Don't plan on that getting fixed anytime soon. People have been reporting problem discs ever since the software was released. And they rarely get fixed. If it does eventually happen, it'll be in a large batch. Customer service won't go in and fix an individual title. That's my experience at least.

There's a huge thread on the Vudu Forum.

I'm fairly sure you weren't at my local store, but that is almost the identical story I had.

I just love hearing stories like that after they had announced this whole disc-to-digital thing as "revolutionary" and a "game-changer". What will be a "game-changer" is when a national retailer can become successful without treating its employees like shit and thus being able to employ people who actually care about what they're doing. In any event, I have absolutely no use for this thing anyways. I just use Vudu for rentals and buy the discs of movies I like- it would have been so much better off if Wal-Mart hadn't taken it over, as Wal-Mart-like low prices haven't even resulted from it that weren't there before (they already had the daily 99-cent rentals in place). Only effect Wal-Mart has had on it was the elimination of the porn section.

Treating their employees like shit? Mine only hires people who speak little English Asking any questions get me the "I don't know" response.

If they paid better they might get better employees but at minimum wage, who gives a fuck

Re: VUDU - 50% Off Disc-to-Digital Conversion ($1 BD & $2.50 DVD)

I just came upon this thread and figured I'd give it a try just to see how my SD DVDs would even come out looking through this conversion process.

The first two films I tried where:

When A Man Loves A Woman
and
Pump Up The Volume

Both told me they were not eligible for the disc to digital conversion. What exactly does that mean? In the case of When A Man Loves A Woman they even had it for rental in HD.

I thought this would be better than hanging on to SD dvds, if not perfect, but if they are going to reject a lot of my dvds, it's really very disappointing. What would be the reason a movie wouldn't be "eligible?"

Thanks.

PS-Seems like everything I try that's in the Disney family got rejected, but then it just seemed to not want to read Only You for an unknown reason and then said Kingpin was not eligible at that's MGM. Very disappointing.

How have these come out for people that have done this already? Did the upgrade look a whole lot better than upconverted SD? I know it accepted Midnight Run and I've seen that in HD on cable and while certainly not stunning, it definitely looked a lot better than the dvd. Is that about what I can expect from an upgrade using this disc to digital process?

Basically, it's limited to the studios that have signed up for Ultraviolet. So it's Universal, Paramount, Fox, Sony, Warner Bros, DreamWorks, Lionsgate, Summit and maybe a few others. Disney and MGM do not participate in Ultraviolet, so none of their titles are compatible.

And even though a title might be Ultraviolet, doesn't mean it's D2D compatible. Altogether, there's only about 7,000 titles that are eligible for D2D conversion. The best way to find out if a title works is to search here:

http://www.vudu.com/disc_to_digital.html

You can also check this long list (might take a couple minutes to load):

In my experience, HDX looks better than HD cable. And it's a big improvement over upconverted DVDs.
