What might/should have been:

Star Trek Into Darkness - Prologue (Nibiru Volcano) - IMAX Edition Edit [HD 720p] from Anton Volkov on Vimeo.

If it helps, in addition to my iTunes code, you can have my 2D Blu-ray. I'm expecting the Steelbook from Canada (stupid Canadian post office lost the package, so I'm waiting for a replacement). That's 2D only, so I'm going to put my 3D Blu-ray in the Steelbook, which will leave me with an extra 2D disc and DVD.

You'll still be missing the Target exclusive extras, unfortunately, but it sounds like it has more than the German copy.

It's sad that some fan took the time and effort out of his own day for no reward to do that, but Paramount couldn't do it with millions of dollars and sophisticated equipment.

What's sadder still is if Paramount were to re-release STID and M:i-GP with shifting aspect ratios on BD, I'd give them my money in a heartbeat.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness Preorder Up (Fall 2013)

I didn't pick up the release due to the bonus material debacle, but I stopped at the Target near my job on Monday night. There were no more copies left of the 3D exclusive.

I ended up price matching Target at Best Buy on Tuesday when I had them price match (and add the DMR coupon) the 3D edition of Iron Man 3.

I had no clue this was the case & already opened the one with just the coupons. I'm really pissed about this, it had Target exclusive all over the front & the version with the bonus disc was no where to be found. I assumed this was that version, obviously I was wrong. Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaame!!!!

Likewise, but it isn't happening now or ever. Did the MIGP Blu release outsource extras digitally as well? Although didn't Bird say that he always intended the IMAX sequences to be seen in 2.35?

He said he preferred it in scope on home video since you can't recreate the IMAX experience at home and the IMAX footage made the scope footage seems small by comparison. Although I agree you can't really replicate the IMAX experience at home (unless you go this route) but the other complaint is silly since the same would happen while watching the movie theatrically. The image opens up and, yes, by comparison the scope footage looks smaller. But that's the whole effin' point. You get acclimated to scope and then - boom - the screen suddenly got taller.

Brad Bird had said if fans of the movie really wanted a shifting aspect ratio version they would release one but nothing came of that.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness Preorder Up (Fall 2013)

I can't fathom watching a shifting aspect ratio movie in a home theater, I think that would drive me nuts.

If they want these at 1.77 for a "bigger" image, then film them that way, but personally I feel the Star duo of film series (Wars and Trek) should both be done at 2.35 scope.

Did you never watch The Dark Knight, Tron Legacy, or The Dark Knight Rises on BD? It's hardly distracting at all. Heck, I didn't even notice most of the aspect ratio shifts while watching Tron Legacy.

No, I have the Dark Knight films on DVD, they're scope all the way through. I haven't watched Tron Legacy yet, it's on my list....

I've got Walmart's "Big Screen Edition" of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and while the movie is a convoluted mess, it's A/V demo material. The forest battle is spectacular, and I really think the shifting aspect ratio helps it. The first time I watched it, I wasn't even conscious that it had changed until it was over and reverted back.

The movie of course sucks in both versions, but the added height of the IMAX frame helps in making Bay's spastic camerawork and editing a little bit more visually coherent.

Yeah, character and narrative are rarely well developed in his films, but by God, they *look* cool!

Apparently the store exclusive versions are sold out on the websites too. I guess I snooze, I lose. The Target one might still be around in stores, but the Best Buy one looks out of reach unless you live in Canada.

I was one of the boycotters who caved like Paramount knew we would, I was just late to the party.

On the subject of Ghost Protocol, wasn't there a Best Buy-exclusive version of that with a whole bunch of additonal extras too? Anyhow, I was going to buy this to actually support the film, but apparently Paramount don't want me to, I guess I'm off to eBay.

Best Buy had a second disc of bonus content, but there were also some featurettes spread across iTunes Extras and Amazon Instant Video.
