The Shadow - 6/4/13
Is there any plans to release this on Blu-ray?
You can watch it on cable in HD and it might be a little silly but it was an entertaining movie and I assume there is an audience for it plus it was made by Universal a big studio?

I loved the movie, and while I'm hoping for a release at some point I fear Universal will just end up slapping us in the face with an old transfer.

I want this one on BD as well. The CGI was always weak but the production design and photography were topnotch.

Hope so, we have The Phantom and The Rocketeer already. Need this one to round out the pulp trilogy of movies that came out around the same time.

This is one of my most eagerly awaited movies on Blu-ray, and I would double- dip (broke down and got the fullframe DVD ages ago) at full retail price if necessary, even if it was a barebones release. I love this movie!

That's a first day purchase. I'll watch the movie and think of my Dad, who loved to quote the opening of the radio show to me.

Really hoping for some special features but not holding my breath. A commentary getting into the original ending would be something! The ending had to be revamped, reshot at the end of production, the Earthquake in 1993 ruined the sets that were to be used.Universal didn't want to spend the money to rebuild everything, so they did what they could.
Finally! Can't wait to own this!
The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy... Soon the 90's pulp films collection will be complete!

Feared this day would never come!! Hoo-ray for Blu-ray!!! Hope they don't find some way to screw up the transfer. Very much looking forward to enjoying some widescreen The Shadow goodness on June 4!

Wow, is that how it works? We make a thread about it, and then it gets announced a couple weeks later?
In that case, how about The Paper? Another one that got a fullscreen only DVD release.

Re: The Shadow - 6/4/13
I don't think it was a completely different ending that was intended, just that it was a smaller scale version of it. Evidently the hall of mirrors sequence was to be larger and more extravagant.
Here is all the info I could find...
From www.shadowsanctum.net
What could have been...
One sad note is that the film's climax (the gun duel in the chamber of mirrors) was one-tenth of what the producers had planned. Why? Two days before shooting was to take place for the climax, that big LA earthquake happened... and broke most of the mirrors! The production team had NO money left in the budget to fix this and no time left in the schedule to re-shoot a different ending battle, so they used what they had and wrapped [filming]. One wonders how much more exciting the struggle between the two rivals would have been if the earthquake had come a week or so later.
(Thanks to Doug Rice for the information!)
From IMDB.COM
The finale in which Cranston chases Shiwan Khan through a hall of mirrors was intended to be longer, with Khan taunting Cranston by displaying images from his violent past on the mirrors. An earthquake (Northridge, 17 January 1994 - 6.7 magnitude) destroyed the set and the filmmakers, out of time and money, were unable to complete the scene as originally envisioned.

Great
I was just watching this on Encore Action HD last night after I heated up a bowl of Orville Redenbacher popcorn.
