New Blu-ray Format Launching in 2013!
Here we go again! At least it doesn't sound like there will be a Toshiba/Sony format war.

I'm done. I upgrade DVD to Blu, but I'm not updating 1,930(and counting) DVDs/Blu-rays to a new format. I'm perfectly content with Blu-ray.

Here we go again.
If BR has taken this long to expand and it still has not overtaken DVD, then I bet the new format will hot take off.
4K HDTVs when people have just spent thousands to upgrade to HDTV/BR, good luck in convincing wives to let their husbands to upgrade and spend another $3,000 to $5,000.
This is going to be a real hard sell.

So currently Blu-ray didn't exactly gain the marketshare they were hoping for with millions of people owning 1080p HDTVs, yet a new format that requires a new player AND a TV will do any better?
Stick a fork in it, physical discs will be relegated to a niche market.

Oh for f@#k's sake, really? Are 4K tvs even on the market yet? And don't they cost thousands of dollars? If this does gain some kind of a foothold, I don't see it doing any better than D-VHS. There will be a few dozen titles out and everyone will ignore it.

Let's not forget, there are still a lot of people stretching SD content across their HD screens and marveling at how great it looks. What will the market for this new format be? A niche of a niche of a niche.
Bill Gates said that too.

Re: New Blu-ray Format Launching in 2013!
I think this would be a tough sell even if new equipment wasn't needed. Naturally, the studios are going to want to charge more money for these 4K discs than for older format discs. If a DVD is $14.99, a blu is $19.99, and a 4K is $29.99+, what is the average person going to buy?
Then, factor in the cost of expensive new equipment, the relative youth of the bluray format, and the growing appeal of digital services. I don't see how this format will get off the ground in a physical form.

http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/sto...ntifier=S_4KTV
Only as mer $24,999.99
The artifacts I'm seeing a blu ray disc should really show up on 4k, I can't see the advantage of being able to see the blur of some blu rays twice as good.

I'm currently still using my 5 - 7-year-old Sharp LC52D62U. Until it dies, I'm not upgrading. When I do upgrade, I'm sure as hell not forking over $16K - $25K for a TV. As for the new format, I've no interest in upgrading anytime soon, either. You need at least a 70" TV for there be any benefit from 4K. There are very few 4K masters since most studio masters top out at 2K (which is barely better than 1080p). This is all way too soon.

Of my (currently) 663 titles, 13 are blu-ray. As long as the 650 DVDs will play on my new blu-ray player, it's all good. I'm OK with being able to add new movies on BD, but I won't be upgrading any of my existing DVDs unless the video quality of the DVD sucks (Outland, Ricochet). I resisted making the change to blu-ray for the longest time because I knew as soon as I did, blu-ray would have to make way for the next new format and everyone would be foaming at the mouth for it. Turns out I was right about the new format, but not about the foaming at the mouth.

I haven't even made it to the 3D TV thing, now they want to add the improved Bluray and the improved bluray player with the improved TV that you have to buy to play them on. "Oh no, I think i've gone cross eyed" to quote A. Powers.

This seems driven by the hardware manufacturers this time, much more so than with Blu-ray. I doubt most of the studios are lining up to support a new physical format. 4K is really about advertising new features, in the hopes that a few suckers will upgrade their hardware. No one thinks this will be any sort of Blu-ray replacement anytime soon.
